Passes[edit]

Hi - I'm not entirely sure that a mountain pass meets the criteria for Project:What is an article?. If there is a town at the pass then we're all good, or if the pass can be considered a region then it would be a valid topic, otherwise the information should be included in the containing region article. If the pass is a valid town/region, please use the Project:Small city article template or the Project:Region article template.

That minor nit aside, thanks for all of your recent contributions! -- (WT-en) Ryan 04:26, 13 April 2006 (EDT)

I'm not sure either, but there was already a link to Bolan Pass in the Quetta article. There is a town or two in it, but I don't know their names. It doesn't really fit in any containing region since it is between Af and Pakistan. I suppose it might be considered a region on its own, but that is odd. Easiest to just mention it, without a link, in both Kandahar & Quetta articles, I think. I've done that and proposed it for deletion.

Other similar things I've edited are Khyber Pass and Karakoram Highway. They are major routes and have towns, so I don't see a problem there. Do you? (WT-en) Pashley 08:11, 13 April 2006 (EDT)

If it's a major route with towns that doesn't really fit into any other region then it seems like a good candidate for a region article, or possibly an itinerary article. That decision is (obviously) up to you since you know the area, so just use whichever template fits. If no template fits then we probably need to figure out where else the information could go. Either way, you seem to have a good grasp of what you're doing now, so I'll trust your better judgement. Thanks again for helping out. -- (WT-en) Ryan 12:29, 13 April 2006 (EDT)

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for dealing with the Travel Topics! (WT-en) Majnoona 20:56, 20 April 2006 (EDT)

What's the right way to do that, though? I've been copying the "this is a Wikivoyage ..." line, but Money uses an isIn Travel topics tag and I wonder if there's a susbt or other simple tag that puts in the right consistent text

You should really use Template:Traveltopic, I think. Also, Wikivoyage is spelt with a lowercase t. --(WT-en) Evan 23:49, 21 April 2006 (EDT)
To use the Travel topic template all you have to do is type {{traveltopic}} and place it at the top of the article. (WT-en) Sapphire 02:00, 22 April 2006 (EDT)
Sorry no one showed that to you earlier. The only reason I knew about that is because I happened to catch Evan doing that. I went back and added into some of the articles you already worked on. (WT-en) Sapphire 02:20, 22 April 2006 (EDT)
I think Maj created it yesterday afternoon in response to Pashley's question right here! --(WT-en) Evan 07:36, 22 April 2006 (EDT)
Thanks. I've been meaning to go over my contributions, but you beat me to it. BTW: The regions might work this way: the North would be both East and Central Estonia and Tallinn would be kept separately. It's small country, so it doesn't make sense to split into too many regions imo. -(WT-en) Visitestonia 03:50, 28 October 2009 (EDT)

Test old names[edit]

I've created a few redirects from historically well-known names like Simla and Jogjakarta to the current official spellings. Test here whether others are needed. Calcutta Madras Bombay Canton Mumbai Kolkata Chennai Marrakesh Cape Breton Leningrad Stalingrad Zaire Congo Outer Mongolia Khumbu Buffalo City Orugallu Nanking Peking Congo-Kinshasa Congo-Brazzaville Zhongdian Indian Subcontinent Ceylon Tamatave Mukden Krasnovodsk Chungking Macao Upper Volta Devonshire West Indies East Indies Saigon Eivissa Jbeil Hotan Trebizond Shigatse Khorat Korat Oudomxay Ayers Rock Hostile environment Gold Coast

Three parts of WuhanHankou Hanyang Wuchang

Hey Pashley, that's very helpful. Thanks. However, I'm wondering whether Canton should direct to Guangzhou, rather than Guangdong. It is true that 'Cantonese' refers to the language, people and cuisine of Guangdong province, but until very recently the city of Guangzhou was referred to as Canton in the West - there was no other name - whereas the province was already known as Guangdong overseas. The airport code for Guangzhou (CAN) reflects this. Anyway, I'm just throwing out some ideas here. I'll leave it to you to make the decision. (WT-en) WindHorse 23 April 06 Ps. I also think that it is about time to change the name of Calcutta to Kolkata - what are your thoughts?

Personally, I like the old names: Bombay, Madras, Simla, Jogjakarta, Calcutta, Burma, ... They're what I know and what I consider standard in English. If it were up to me, the pages would all use those names with redirects from the new ones. However, I don't think that matches policy. Using the new names is OK with me too, as long as there's a redirect.

I think you're right, so I changed Canton. (WT-en) Pashley 03:21, 23 April 2006 (EDT)

I have a question regarding Canton. There are many numerous places in the US that share the name Canton with the Chinese Guangzhou. Would it be wise to create a disambig page at Canton with a link to Guangzhou, or would that be counter productive? I, myself, had never heard of Guangzhou or Canton, which, suprised me since the city is home to 6 million. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 21:27, 27 June 2006 (EDT)
I'd say that's definitely one of those where there's a main one (London, England; Canton, China; Stockholm, Sweden) and the London, Ontario or whatever go on an "other uses" page. You should not have to go through disambiguation for "Canton"; it is one of the world's major cities. (WT-en) Pashley 00:41, 30 June 2006 (EDT)
I followed your advice and moved the diambig page at Canton to Canton (disambiguation). Thanks. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 00:54, 30 June 2006 (EDT)

Hajj[edit]

Thanks for creating the Hajj article. I'd like to suggest that you add that link to One month in the Holy Land article. I created an Islamic version, but I believe a Hajj itinerary is much more suitable. Also, will you redirect the Islamic Holy Land article? Thanks. - Sapphire

This is the second time you've removed the info that time zone designation "Z" comes from the old alphabetic zone labeling system (where it did stand for "zero" but was accompanied by zones A-M and N-Y). Are you disputing that there is such a thing, or do you just not want to mention it? - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 20:33, 4 June 2006 (EDT)

I'd never heard of it, am not sure it's important, and cannot read the link you give (I'm in China and that's a US Navy site; I wonder which gov't blocks access; most likely China but who knows) but I believe you and it certainly does no harm, so I've put it back.

It's a copy of a map published by Her Majesty's Nautical Alamanac Office. I wanted to mention it because there are still maps published (like that one © 2004) that use it. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 07:37, 5 June 2006 (EDT)

Hi Sandy,

I have some trouble to change the cotw this week because I changed it on the porject page but the new cotw doesn't show. Could you have a look? Maybe i don't get it. It's in the formula. Thanks, (WT-en) Jan 03:08, 15 August 2006 (EDT)

Looks OK to me. I see correct tags on both everest and Project pages. Maybe you need to clear cache or some such to get it working. I'm probably the wrong person to ask, though. Just a contributor; I have no technical expertise or administrator privileges on this system. Try the TRavellers' Pub or ask Evan. (WT-en) Pashley 03:27, 15 August 2006 (EDT)

Thanks for the email. I'm going to look into it the place. I'm hoping to be in SE Asia next fall so I'll stop by there and check it out. I found this on CNN's website, which may be of use to you Traveling China's ancient Silk Road. -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 17:25, 15 August 2006 (EDT)

Silk Road[edit]

hello

i'm extremely interested in following as much of the silk road as possible from somewhere in china (possibly Xian) back to Istanbul. obviously it is somewhat impractical to travel though Baghdad at the moment and i would intend to travel through iran instead but was wondering if you had any prospect of a time-scale or budget for the trip?

cheers

Tubing[edit]

I think it's more of a southern US thing. We mostly do it on spring-fed rivers on hot days. I find it hard to believe that someone has never heard of it, but I have a pretty locale-centric mindset at times. It seems pretty specific to the location to list on the topic page. Maybe we can get more input from people that are less surrounded by it? (WT-en) Jordanmills 13:54, 19 September 2006 (EDT)

Later I mentioned finding tubes for rent in Yangshuo & he replied:

That's pretty cool then! Quite topically, I'm going to be on canoeing stretch of a river tomorrow (race training and doing research for Canoeing the San Marcos River). I'll keep an ear out for more international tubing. (WT-en) Jordanmills 11:28, 16 March 2007 (EDT)

Guangzhou[edit]

Hi Pashley, I would like to thank you for your great work on the Guangzhou page. I'll be travelling to Guangzhou again in December and last time I was there, I thought that the city is somewhat difficult to grasp. There are only few guidebooks that have anything about GZ and the maps are usually horrible or in Chinese.

I have been creating a vector street map, but my progress is starting to slow down, since I don't have the street names. Since you seem to have a lot of knowledge about the city, I wonder if you could take a look at the map I have created and give me some feedback? Also if you have any resources (online or offline) that you could point out, I would be happy. You can find my email address from my user page. Thanks!

Admin[edit]

So, you've now been added as an admin. This means you'll see some extra tabs across the top of each page to protect or delete the page. In addition, you can now "rollback" edits by other users -- a fast way to revert. You'll also see some links to "block" or "ban" registered or anonymous users. You're free to use any of these functions as you see fit to help the project, but we very rarely use any of them except the rollback feature and "delete" (usually after a vote). Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for taking on this job! --(WT-en) Evan 15:42, 18 October 2006 (EDT)

Historic capitals[edit]

Hi Pahley, the historic capitals listing on the China article looks great and is very informative. However, as the 'cities' and 'other destination' sections function primarily as indexes offering people a convenient way to locate specific articles, I'm just wondering whether this information wouldn't be better suited placed under 'history'. Anyway, I'm just throwing out an opinion here. You know your way around, so I'll leave the decision in your capable hands. Cheers. (WT-en) WindHorse 09:17, 20 December 2006 (EST)

Photo's[edit]

Hello Pashley. Your location and contributions are great for Wikivoyage. I have a older Sony digital camera (model mvc-FD880 with wide angle lens), that uses 3 1/2 floppy discs and recharges on US 110v. I would be willing to send it to you if you can use it. It is no longer any use to me and is in a drawer awaiting a user. (WT-en) 2old 09:55, 11 September 2007 (EDT)

I think it's improved. I'm sorry I haven't been of more help - I'm wrapped up in the Chicago project and that greedily saps my every moment on Wikivoyage. I think the article could use coverage of a few more important topics: visas, most importantly; I'd like to see how they are acquired, and corollary to that, which places hire from overseas (China, Japan, Korea). Also, the commerce question: is it a school or a business (e.g. teacher as salesman), which is a shock to the systems of many people who expect to be like their fifth grade teacher and are instead pimping a pink bunny rabbit for two year olds. It's tough to cover so many work situations in one article. I could foresee Teaching English in Japan covering a whole page quite easily, for example. Does that help at all? Gay travel[edit]

I applied the banner, which felt seriously weird since I believe quite strongly that the article should not be deleted (and for that matter, some of the things cited as examples of why it quote-unquote "should" be deleted should also have articles, IMO) -- but you're right, we should follow due process here. That probably entails giving it (exactly) its full two weeks, even though a clear consensus to keep is emerging, apart from the one wingnut. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 21:20, 25 November 2007 (EST)

License upgrade[edit]

I see you added license upgrade to the tech requests. It's actually not an issue for the tech team—IB has already given the go ahead with the upgrade. The problem was the inability of our community to reach a consensus on the matter. The only way to get it done, I think, would be for the community to reevaluate the idea, and to see whether anyone still objects. I'm staying out of it, though, my opinion is clear by now, and I expended enough goodwill on the last round! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:15, 6 January 2009 (EST)

China Link to Conversion Rates[edit]

Why did you undo my edit adding the link to current conversion rates? You mentioned "remove external link per policy, update text" where is that "policy". The page was the China page under Buy section. http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=China&diff=1125978&oldid=1125852

Also, you changed the date to April, but NOT 2009 ... and if you clicked my link then used the info you found at the link to update the 6.88 to 6.83 ... then is that not a little hypocritical to remove the link, but use it to find the information?

Are we not after getting information that is usable and fresh ... not just stale and old.

Lastly, I was looking to get the Currency and do a conversion of some money ... the reason I made the edit was because I was looking for that information and surmised that the next person would find it useful as well. So I took the time to add it.

This is certainly no way to get well intentioned people to add useful items to the site.

I suppose you will just delete this comment as well.

Have a nice day.

Deactivate notice[edit]

Hi Sandy! I'm sorry to see you leave and wish you well. Would be great to see you come back one time in the future. (WT-en) jan 03:02, 8 April 2010 (EDT)

Something is odd here. I normally use Firefox on Linux; that + this site have had problems for months. I assumed it was the Great Firewall, but it does not seem to be; the site works OK with Internet Explorer on a different computer. Testing with a different browser (epiphany) on my machine, it is much better than with Firefox. Maybe one of my add-ons? I'll do some more testing and probably get it working at some point. Likely not soon. (WT-en) Pashley 00:58, 14 April 2010 (EDT)
Could be Sandy. I have had terrible problems with certain Firefox add-ons in the past. In my experience, Wikivoyage works great a with a stripped down browser designed for speed. Google Chrome is the obvious one. Sometimes I cannot believe how quick Chrome is when patrolling for example. Saves a huge amount of time compared to any other browser I have used.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:14, 14 April 2010 (EDT)
I do not think it is only Firefox. Chrome on this machine is only marginally better. There are other oddities on my Internet connection, though this is the worst. I'm moving soon, though (to Shanghai) and hope that might make a difference. (WT-en) Pashley 11:21, 25 June 2010 (EDT)

My original user page message, now removed there: At this point (April 2010) I am mostly off the air as far as Wikivoyage is concerned. For the last several months, site performance has been completely appalling for me — sometimes it does not load at all & when it does, it is extremely slow and the formatting is horrendous. I am not certain if this is the Great Firewall messing with things, or what, but the site is nearly unusable for me now.

For no reason I can see, the problem vanished this week. However, I'm about to move, won't be back here until I'm settled in the new place. (WT-en) Pashley 22:16, 9 July 2010 (EDT)

I have been watching this one hatch with some interest. I think it is close to being more than worthy of a nomination and very well done so far. Just a couple of comments:

  • One little formating issue which is sure to come under scrutiny is the use of front-links which are positively discouraged in our MoS. For example International Living should really be International Living [3]
  • Instinctively I feel that the article would benefit from a medical section, the need for evacuation insurance in many less developed countries etc. For many retired folks this would be a major issue I feel. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:39, 4 June 2011 (EDT)

Courtray / Kortrijk[edit]

Dear Pashley,
Perhaps you mistakenly regarded this edit of mine as vandalism, but it is not. The article about the town on Wikivoyage uses the name Courtray, so that's the name that should be used in the list. Here are a few references for the use of the name Courtray in English: [4], [5]. - 83.119.235.214 05:19, 11 September 2011 (EDT)

No, I did not think it was vandalism. I just think that since the original UNESCO list uses Kortrijk, it is better to leave that spelling in our article. Kortrijk redirects to Courtray, so anyone following the link ends up in the right place.
Change it back if you like; this is a judgement call and, if you know the area, your judgement may well be better than mine. (WT-en) Pashley 22:13, 11 September 2011 (EDT)
