Hello, OhanaUnited! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here.

Thanks a lot for your contributions so far. I hope that trip to Andorra is doable somehow. All the best, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 18:18, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks so much; you've been making lots of great contributions of all sorts! One word about "Learn", though. A decision was made some time ago to have "Learn" listings only for institutions of learning where a non-matriculated visitor could take a course lasting about 2 weeks or less. Of course, universities that have beautiful campuses can be listed in "See" and those that have sporting matches, concerts or lecture series open to the public can be listed in "Do", but that's different. "Learn" is an optional section and we decided to greatly limit its scope.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:52, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

An award for you!

The Wikivoyage Barncompass
If Wikivoyage gave out a "Rookie of the Year" award, you'd be a shoo-in. We need more contributors like you around here — hope to see you conntinuing to help out for a long time to come. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 02:57, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Do you have lots of enemies or something?

You've been a Wikivoyager for a little less than a month, and your userspace has been the target of vandalism a ridiculous number of times. I hope it doesn't put you off editing here, because as others have noted you're already a valuable member of the community. We could always protect your page if you wanted it? But I do wonder why your userspace in particular seems to attract all the vandals. Hope your trip to Andorra was worth it :-) ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:48, 25 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Two times isn't that much, and a single undo reverts all the damage so it won't affect me. Maybe a semi-protect on my user talk page will do the trick. OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:37, 25 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well sorry to contradict you, but I've counted six instances of vandalism between your userpage and talk page since you joined; that's a lot by any measure. My page hasn't been vandalised that many times in five years! But if you want semi-protection, I'd be happy to do it for you. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 17:45, 25 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I forgot to count the user page. In that case, yes it does sound high. OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:47, 25 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ThunderingTyphoons!: Can you put a semi-protect on my userpage and user talk page? OhanaUnitedTalk page 16:45, 28 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Of course :-) Remember that only autoconfirmed users will be able to message you from now. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:47, 28 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
All done. Just ask me or any other admin if you ever want to change the protection level (the two other options are 'only allow admins' and 'allow everyone'). --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:51, 28 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I just want to let you know that I've taken the unusual step of making you an Autopatroller while you're still a pretty new user. You're doing outstanding work and are trusted. I'm really glad you discovered us.

All the best,

Cantonese phrasebook

Hey there. As you know, we have a Cantonese phrasebook here on WV, and since you appear to be from Hong Kong, I was wondering if you could perhaps go through my edits to make sure that they are accurate. I am not a native Cantonese speaker, so I just wanted to have a second opinion on my edits from a native speaker. The dog2 (talk) 19:32, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is a belated thanks for adding a recommendation to star banners. Feel free to add more recommendations in future. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 22:32, 16 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Would you like to be a patroller? --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 21:52, 25 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You now are a patroller. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 13:51, 26 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Jyutping to Yale converter

Hi there, just so you know, I've found an online Jyutping to Yale converter, so if you wish to contribute more to the Cantonese phrasebook or add Cantonese terms to our article, it will be easier for you to do so. Here it is: [1]. Cheers. The dog2 (talk) 17:27, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

AFAICT people have told jokes about every serious threat to life, whether that's war, flu, cancer, heart attacks, or something else. Yes, people did actually tell jokes about the 1918 flu. We don't happen tell those any longer (nor do we still tell jokes about Kaiser Wilhelm), because that's not "our" story, but it happened. Making fun of what we fear is a coping mechanism. timestamp for prices

thank you for the updates in the New York article.

Could you please add timestamps for your updated prices? so the reader sees, that the price is not older than 10 years.

for example: "the NJ Transit commuter rail to Penn Station takes about 30 minutes and costs $15.25 each way (March 2022)." Flightnavigator (talk) 08:30, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Phone numbers

Thank you for your updates to various Canadian articles.

We format phone numbers in a particular way so that people using cell phones can dial directly from the article by tapping the phone number.

For places where you do not have to dial the area code (7-digit dialling), we format numbers like this: +1 867 987-6543

For places where you do have to dial the area code (19-digit dialling), we format numbers like this: +1 415-987-6543

For toll-free numbers, where you have to dial "1" first (11-digit dialling), we format numbers like this: +1-888-987-6543

It would be helpful to travellers using cell phones if you could remember to use this formatting. Thanks. Ground Zero (talk) 21:56, 30 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@OhanaUnited: is there something about what I've written above that is unclear? I'd like to help you understand this. Please let me know what the usage is. Thanks. Ground Zero (talk) 04:06, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Introducing Wikivoyage at university

Swept in from the pub

I'll be travelling to Bogota later this month and the organizers will give me a few mins to present a lightning talk about Wikivoyage to university students. Please give me some high-level ideas on what to introduce and how to encourage new participation (in English and/or Spanish Wikivoyage) in <5 mins. Thanks. OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:31, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Well, I mean no disrespect to my Spanish speaking colleagues, but I find the Spanish-language woefully short on content with a much too small editor community. They seem to have only about 10% of what the English language Wikivoyage has. Recruiting some volunteers who can edit the Spanish wiki would be awesome! Mrkstvns (talk) 20:42, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think the most important thing to emphasize is the core fact that this is the website any traveler can edit, and that the membership works to avoid touting, to try to make its content more reliable and less subject to commercial manipulation than commercial sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor, but that it's only as good as its volunteer editors. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:48, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think that the fact that you post pithy statements based on personal experience should make it very appealing versus (e.g.) the overhead of Wikipedia and citing sources. —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:35, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Will you be able to show them how to use the listing editor? Because one option is to say "Hey, here's how this works. The organizer suggested that I eat in this restaurant, and [click, click, type, type] – now it's in Wikivoyage." WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:29, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you are going to teach them how to use the listing editor, make sure that the device you're using has Javascript enabled. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 03:34, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Firstly, congratulations!
Here's what comes to mind:
1) Highlight the fact that Wikivoyage encourages people to contribute to articles about places that they are familiar with. It can also allow others to learn something new about places they're not so familiar with.
2) Explain that any kind of contribution, no matter how big or small, can make a big difference.
3) Highlight the fact that Wikivoyage is perhaps (and this might be an exaggeration) more user-friendly than common sites such as Yelp, Tripadvisor, and so on.
That's my take on it. Best of luck with the lightning talk! Roovinn (talk) 01:05, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
