Hankey is a town of 12,000 people (2011) in the Gamtoos River Valley in South Africa, near Humansdorp. Hankey is in a citrus producing area in the Gamtoos River Valley. The town is mainly a residence for many of the citrus farmworkers and have little to offer tourists.

As is the case with most South African towns, there are residential areas previously reserved for non-white residents set up on the outskirts of the town. In the case of Hankey these are Centerton on the western edge of the town (on the opposite bank of the Klein River) and Weston, located about 1.5 km (0.93 mi) to the south-west (on the opposite bank of the Gamtoos River).

By car[edit]

Follow the N2 West from Port Elizabeth (about 70 km) or the N2 East from Garden Route and take the Humansdorp turnoff (R330). Follow the R330 to Hankey.

By plane[edit]

The nearest domestic airport is Port Elizabeth Airport, approximately 110 km away, the nearest international airport is Cape Town International Airport, approximately 600 km away.

  • The final resting place of Saartjie (Sarah) Baartman. On 19 August 2002, the remains of Saartjie Baartman were laid to rest on Vergaderingskop, a hill on the edge of town overlooking the valley where she was born. She was a Khoikhoi woman who, due to the European objectification of her buttocks, was exhibited as a freak show attraction in Britain and France from 1810 to 1815 under the name "Hottentot Venus".
