Ho is the capital of the Volta region in Ghana and is 3-4 hours from Accra.

Understand

Ho is the administrative capital of Ghana's Volta Region. It is a lush valley between Mount Adaklu and the Akwapin-Togo mountain range. Often called the "Oxygen City" of Ghana due to its clean air, green hills, and relaxed pace. Ho is the traditional seat of the Asogli States. It serves as the commercial and governance center for the surrounding districts.

Daily life in Ho is grounded in rich Ewe traditions, lively central markets, and a strong sense of community. The town comes alive every September during the Asogli Yam Festival (Te Za), a celebration marked by traditional drumming, dancing, and grand durbars presided over by the Agbogbomefia (the paramount chief). Local cuisine, including staples like akple paired with fetri detsi (fresh okro soup) or abobi tadi, is a central part of everyday social life. Thanks to improved road links and its regional airport, the town also acts as the primary gateway for eco-tourism in the Volta Region.

From Accra you can catch an A/C tro-tro from Kinbu Gardens (3 hr).

Get around

To get around, take a taxi from anywhere. Standard fare is 50 pasewas. As with anywhere else in Ghana, make sure you note landmarks around you so you know what to tell the taxi driver on your way home. The Station (directly south of the market) has Tros going to regional destinations (such as Hohoe) and to Accra.

Taxis are difficult to find after midnight.

• 2 Adaklu Mountain. The Adaklu Mountain Eco-tourism Committee (AMEC) is a community-based organization that offers a genuine cultural experience that travelers are unlikely to find elsewhere. Hike to the top of beautiful Adaklu Mountain, observe and participate in the everyday life of the people from palm wine tapping to Kente weaving to bee keeping (the best honey in West Africa!) Visit and learn a few phrases in Ewe and help support local development efforts for an experience that is beneficial for you and the communities. Homestays, meals, guided mountain tours, drumming performances and more are all available. Any money made from tourist activities are reinvested into the preservation of the mountain and community development. Take a tro-tro from the Adaklu station in Ho or from the market on market days. The welcome centre is located in Helekpe. Slow down and spend the night in the village.

Drink

There are a ton of drinking spots in Ho. Tourists, volunteers, and peace corps types like to hang out at White House (next to the Stanbic Bank). Sky Plus Hotel is also nice and comes with an excellent view, but be warned that a taxi ride to and from there will be both difficult to obtain and expensive. If you prefer a more local experience, try Mirage. To get there, hire a taxi to "Voradep Village" and get out when the paved road ends.
