The fishing village of Luanco is a coastal town, with a beach, in Asturias province in northern Spain. It has an interesting historic centre, and beautiful beaches washed by the Bay of Biscay. It is well worth having a stroll around this village, whose origins go back to medieval times. It has many palace buildings, mostly from the 18th century, as well as some Modernist constructions.

Understand

[edit]

Luanco thrives in the summertime, as many of the people who own real estate are from Madrid and come to Luanco to live in the summer. This is when the town really comes alive.

You should also visit the fishing harbour and the promenade, an ideal spot for a drink at one of the local bars. Luanco is the tuna capital of Asturias. Gastronomic events focusing on this fish have been held here since 1984.

Get in

[edit]

Luanco is serviced by ALSA's bus system. Buses run daily from the three biggest cities: Oviedo, Gijon, and Aviles.

Asturias is very well known for its cider (sidra). Be sure to stop in and have a bottle at a local sidreria. You should plan on having the bartender serve it to you, as it is elaborately poured out of the bottle from above the head and into the cup below.

There are numerous cafes along the small harbour. If you are familiar with pouring the sidra, feel free to take your bottle and glass outside after you have purchased it (just remember to bring it back when you are finished).
