Mount Carmel is in Coal Region, Pennsylvania.

Mount Carmel is the largest town near Centralia, where an underground coal fire is burning.

Mount Carmel, like nearby Ashland and Centralia, has fallen significantly in population. At its peak at the 1930 census, the town had almost 18,000 inhabitants; it now has fewer than 6,000 residents.
