Nananu-i-ra is a small island about 1.5km off of the north coast of Viti Levu, in Fiji.

Some bungalows, palms, etc.

Understand

[edit]

The island is home to a couple of resorts and backpacker cottage accommodation options (bure) as well as private homes and villas. Most of the appeal of this island is due to its small secluded and relatively uninhabited nature, and as such there are not really any restaurants or businesses.

Get in

[edit]

Travellers typically arrive there by chartering a local motorboat from the mainland; the nearest town is Rakiraki.

Get around

See

[edit]
A great sunset
  • A must to see is One Bay, a beautiful white sandy beach.
  • Behind this beach there's a tropical rain forest, in which lies an ancient Fijian village. All over the island, there are many archeological sites that are not been studied.
  • Walking around the island you can see burial sites.

Do

[edit]
  • Scuba diving.

Scuba diving around the island is amazing. The Bligh Waters are famous for their colourful soft corals. You can't see everywhere else as many soft coral as in Nananu-I-Ra. The most famous dive site is Golden Dream, it's a very colourful site that lies at a depth of 20 m. The Vatu-I-Ra passage is famous for its strong currents so each dive site on this strait is a drift dive. On this side, the most beautiful dive site is called Mary's Tag. It's a wall of corals that goes down to over 50 m. Very strong current, so you must be prepared.

Around the island the visibility is very good especially from August to January. Arguably the best period of the year to dive in Nanunu is from December to April–May, when the visibility is still pretty, but the water is also warmer (28-29 C°).

There are 2 dive shops on the island.
