Repentigny is an off-island suburb of Montreal in the Lanaudière region of Quebec. It is located at the convergence of the L'Assomption River and Rivière des Prairies with the St. Lawrence River.

Repentigny

Repentigny, population 86,100 (2021), is located in Lower Lanaudière with a great history of river navigation (especially pleasure boating), places of worship, agriculture, mills, forestry, arts and culture. It is a town of cultural activities, dining, nautical activities, sports and outdoor activities.

History

It was founded in 1670 by Jean-Baptiste Le Gardeur, son of Seigneur Pierre Le Gardeur. During the town's first 250 years, Repentigny was only inhabited by a few hundred peasants, or habitants, and was an agricultural community. In 1677, the first population census only shows 30 inhabitants. Its first mayor was Benjamin Moreau 1855.

  • Festival de Feu et de Glace (Festival of Fire and Ice, a winter fest), January–February.
  • Festival de spectacles jeune-public de Lanaudière (Youth theatre fest), early July.
  • Rendez-Vous Estival (Summer Rendez-Vous, a theme park with familial activities and rock shows), early August.
  • Festival Gospel (Gospel Fest, International gospel choirs fest), mid-August.
  • National de Soccer (Soccer Nationals, 18- level national soccer event), mid-August.
  • Internationaux de Tennis junior du Canada Banque Nationale (National Bank Junior Tennis Internationals of Canada, the biggest sports event in the city), late August-early September
  • Fête du Petit-Village (Little town fest, cultural rendez-vous in the old Saint-Paul-l'Ermite sector), every 2 autumns.
  • The Fête Nationale du Québec, la St-Jean, brings many activities, such as shows and performances on stage in L'île Lebel.
  • Many outdoor shows and movie projections.

As part of the 350th anniversary of the City of Repentigny, mural artist Ilana Pichon and the MU collective produced a mural, Chemins d'été.
  • 2 Place de Bergerac, Rue Notre-Dame & Boul. Brien. Commemorates the twinning of Repentigny with Bergerac, France. Place de Bergerac was developed in 2020 as part of the 350th anniversary of Repentigny. Visitors will find a monumental sculpture "Jubilate".
  • 3 Terres Noires Forest (Aménagement du boisé des Terres Noires), chemin du Brûlé. Offers hiking paths.
  • 4 Parc de l’île Lebel (l’ile Lebel Regional Park), 396 Rue Notre-Dame (located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, in downtown Repentigny, at the Espace culturel). Located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, this 15.7-hectare park offers 3 km of walking trails, weight training and exercise equipment, picnic and play areas for children.

Charlemagne

Located across the L'Assomption River from Repentigny on the west bank, Charlemagne a picturesque, heritage and modern town and is one of the smallest municipal territories in Quebec in terms of land area. Charlemagne is, famously, the birthplace and childhood hometown of singer Céline Dion.

L'Assomption

Located to the east of Repentigny on the banks of the L'Assomption River, L'Assomption is a small city that was originally settled in the early 1700s. L'Assomption offers numerous heritage buildings and is home to the Hector-Charland theater, which offers a variety of shows and is the local cultural center.
