Sidikalang is a city in North Sumatra and it is also the capital of Dairi Regency. It is famous for its coffee (kopi sidikalang) and durian.

You will mostly pass through this city if you coming from Aceh west coast into North Sumatra. You will pass nearby the town as well if you heading to Samosir island in Lake Toba via the land route bridge.

If you are a durian lover, watch out for durian season! Around the main street, you can spot durian trucks selling. The durian taste much better from other region.

A lot of chinese food shop are concentrated around near the corner between main street and 1 Jl. Sitellu Nempu.

Kopi Sidikalang, a famous variety of robusta / arabica coffee originated from this region.

As predominantly people who live here is Batak, you will find a lot of churches compare to mosques. Buddhist temples are even far more less than mosque.

Go next[edit]

  • Subulussalam or Singkil in Aceh - minivans run from Jl. Ujung (between Jl. Gereja and Jl. SM Raja). The journey takes 2.5-3 hours and costs Rp30,000 (June 2015). The minivan is scheduled at 9am but doesn't leave before it's full.
  • Gayo highland via Kutacane
  • Lake Toba and Samosir island via the only connecting land bridge
  • Sibolga - minivans run from Jl. Pakpak. The journey takes 6-7 hours and costs Rp70,000 (June 2015). There is a minivan every hour in the morning.
