Problems[edit]

A lot of good work has gone into this article, but I see some problems:

(1) Wikivoyage:External links does not permit citations or refs, so those need to be removed. They can be put on this page (but not with ref tags, please) if anyone considers them important or particularly interesting sources for divers who'd like to read further about this shoal.

(2) Unused fields in listing templates (such as in the "Connect" section) should not be removed, and should be restored.

(3) Also, as a general observation, I think this article probably has an overly encyclopedic tone. Is all of the content essential? I'm not a diver, but it's a question worth considering.

Nice to see someone else working on a dive site article, I will dig up a map for it.
  • I don't see any citations/refs. Where?
  • I do see one inline link to Wikipedia for ragged tooth shark. I recognise that this is against policy, but it is a policy that I personally oppose. I didn't create the link, and I am not going to remove it either. I will not object if you do as you would be following the entrenched policy that is so vehemently supported by a few editors and therefore you have every right to do so.
  • I will have a look through the content and see if it all looks useful to the diver. Watch this space.
  • I agree that the headings should be kept and the content filled in as the information becomes available. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 15:24, 5 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Links to a few more maps which might be useful • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 15:46, 5 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like all the refs and inline citations except for the inline Wikipedia link were removed since last night. I will indeed remove the inline WP link, and I would like to solicit your participation in a new discussion at Wikivoyage talk:External links#Revisit policy on linking to sister sites? The consensus is still against inline WP links, and I would love your take on how those could be curated effectively, but there seems to be a developing consensus in favor of adding a Wikipedia or Wikidata tab in listings. Visibility of Wikivoyage information[edit]

One of the issues that need addressing is the visibility of Wikivoyage content. If I Google "Diving Aliwal Shoal" the Wikivoyage content does not appear in the first 5 pages if listed content. Same for Wikitravel. The same applies if I Google "Diving Cape Town", and I know there is extensive content on Wikivoyage. It appears there is a need to consider the mechanisms to promote the visibility of Wikivoyage content on Google. Thank you for taking an interest in this. Please have a look at Wikivoyage:Search Expedition and its talk page. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:39, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New banner[edit]

I think the problems indicated above have all been addressed. I am thinking of providing a new banner. The existing banner does not have good contrast and hides some of the shark. Look at the shark photo I inserted below.

Also< I think the banner "Diving Aliwal Shoal" is a misnomer because the 1st word "Diving" is not part of the place name. If, within Wikivoyage, one searches for "Aliwal Shoal", one does not get to this page because the "Diving" is taken as part of the place name.

Kind regards, Willem Ferguson
