Article Renamed From East England

[edit]

Renamed this article from East England to East Anglia.

East Anglia is a more specific region than East England, and the page was clearly talking about East Anglia, not East England (which would include eg. Kent, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Northumberland. (WT-en) Chris j wood 16:32, 1 Jul 2004 (EDT)

Trouble is, "East Anglia" (government "economic regions" aside) does not traditionally include Bedfordhire and Hertfordshire (some would say that East Anglia is really only Norfolk and Suffolk, though most would nowadays admit Cambridgeshire and Essex too). What the BBC calls "The Eastern Counties" encompasses the counties included here (plus Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, though I think that has more to do with transmitter coverage than anything else) -- might that not be a better name for the present article? -- (WT-en) Picapica 14:37, 3 Oct 2004 (EDT)

Well, for me East Anglia is only Norfolk, Suffolk, (the new, well really Cambridgeshire) Huntingdonshire and probably Cambridgeshire. Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Essex are part of the South East. They have only been included in the government's / EU's new "Eastern England" region to make it bigger and more equal with the others (as well as doing the reverse to the South East). -- (WT-en) DanielC 17:11, 6 Jun 2005 (EDT)

This article needs to be moved back to its original "East England" name. ~ 61.91.191.10 15:30, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
I concur with both the conclusions and the reasoning of the two contributions above this one.

Hertfordshire

[edit]

I was born and bred in Hertford and certainly don't regard myself as East Anglian. So we are all in agreement. Who can change this?(WT-en) Shep 11:08, 7 November 2009 (EST)

Hmm. Regional issues are the bugbear of Wikivoyage :). I would just (only just) agree with changing the article title back to East England. The problem with that though has already been identified - East England could mean (and does mean) areas way to the north of the scope of this article. East Anglia is normally only used to refer to Norfolk and Suffolk (with small bits of Essex and Cambs perhaps). Certainly not Hertfordshire and Bedforshire. But, do folks in Herts and Beds regard themselves as living in East England? That is far from certain. I just come down on the side of changing back to East England but it is far from obvious. To answer your question Shep - anyone can change this. But it is right that it is discussed first. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:29, 7 November 2009 (EST)

Not sure I know how to change a page without creating a new one and cutting and pasting. By the way, I see you have been working on the Broads. Perhaps this should be changed to Norfolk Broads given another meaning of "Broads"? (WT-en) Shep 12:06, 7 November 2009 (EST)

East England is currently a redirect page to East Anglia, so the redirect would need to be removed and the current East Anglia content copied in there. However, I think it should wait for more opinions and a concensus. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 12:12, 7 November 2009 (EST)
Technically, if there is a need to divide England up in this way then Hertfordshire should be classified as one of the Home Counties (Essex, Middlesex, Surrey, etc. (WT-en) Shep 14:20, 7 November 2009 (EST)
"East of England" looks like it is commonly used to define this region? If so, I think it would be nice to use a name a bit more precise than "East England". And to rename this article, you should use the move tab, which will preserve the attribution history. --96.231.44.244 15:36, 7 November 2009 (EST)
Dead right about using the move function to preserve the attribution history. If we decide that East England is the name, then the exisitng East England (re-direct) page will need to be deleted by an administrator before any move is possible I think. East of England is not a bad suggestion. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:03, 7 November 2009 (EST)

Rename East of England

[edit]

I think this article should be renamed the East of England that's the official name of the region and East Anglia only refers to Norfolk and Suffolk. 152.78.235.20 15:38, 19 January 2012 (EST)
