The George Hotel

[edit]

, I noticed the Principal Hayley hotel The George Hotel is not listed under splurge, can we have it listed? Send me a message if you require any details not public on the website VerbInteractive (talk) 13:08, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

To save time here is the posting with only factual info (I can't post the listing as I represent the company)

Done. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:38, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Suggested description: A 4-star hotel and event venue offering 249 bedrooms, 8 event suites, and a restaurant on George Street in Edinburgh. Constructed in 1775 as part of Edinburgh’s new town boom, the hotel was originally built as 5 separate town houses inspired by the world-renowned architect Robert Adam.VerbInteractive (talk) 13:46, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
I would be more inclined to say "249 room hotel on busy George Street". From what I can find the building was built by John Young in the 1780s. AlasdairW (talk) 21:23, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
I think your suggestion for the first sentence edit is fine. Great point on the original architect, but I feel that the reno by David Bryce is more historically interesting. VerbInteractive (talk) 01:09, 7 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

The Roxburghe

[edit]

The company I represent has taken over a hotel [The Roxburghe] in this same area of town as another hotel [The George Hotel] they own, does anyone see any issues about posting both Hotels information under Sleep/Splurge? VerbInteractive (talk) 14:37, 16 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Normally a nearby second hotel from the same company would be best handled by adding a sentence to the George Hotel listing (see "Standing Order" in Drink for something similar). Can you provide any links about the hotel's history, or details of what makes this different. AlasdairW (talk) 18:21, 17 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
The main difference between the 2 is the fact the The Roxburghe has a spa Historically, the George is more interesting, I haven't found a whole lot on the new hotel history as of yet. If you feel adding the sentence is the best route let me know, if not here is the I listing propose with what info I have collect so far:
  • 2 The Roxburghe, 38 Charlotte Square, +44 (0) 131 240 5500. Check-in: 2pm, check-out: 12am. A 4-star hotel and event venue offering free Wifi, 198 bedrooms, 7 meeting and event suites, spa and leisure club, and The George Street Bar and Grill on Charlotte Square from £57.

I have updated the George listing to mention the other hotel for the time being. My hope is once I collect some more info on this new listing that it will be unique enough to warrant it's own listing. VerbInteractive (talk) 15:15, 20 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Upgrade to "guide" status

[edit]

I think this page deserves an upgrade to guide status. If not, please let me know what you think should be added/changed. Otherwise, if nobody objects I will do the upgrade. 26 July 2015 (UTC)

I think that the listings are probably at guide status, but some other aspects of the article could be improved. Some more background on the history would be good - explaining James Craig's plan and how apart from Princes St. not much has changed etc. Get in could be expanded including adding parking costs, and get around might also be useful. Mapmask could be added to define the area on the map (see Old Town). Go next could give the neighbouring districts to help readers navigate. There is also room for a couple more images. AlasdairW (talk) 21:00, 27 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I noticed you added the list of the Edinburgh districts under a new "go next" section to all of the respective district articles Edinburgh/South, Edinburgh/Leith, etc. I don't think this is very useful to have, since the main Edinburgh page already has this list - so readers can get an overview of available districts on that page. It duplicates info, which is more effort to maintain. Also as far as I understand, the guidelines about district articles do not require a "go next" section (since this section should go under the main page). So, I would remove the lists again from the district articles. What's your opinion about it? dom (talk) 17:19, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I realise that it is not required, but I think that it can be useful for readers. I was probably wrong to suggest it for guide status above. It alternatively could go in a few sentences at the start of the article: "The New Town is north of the Old Town...", which is suggested in the guidelines "define its borders". It is a mistake to assume that all readers have come from the Edinburgh page - they may be reading this page as their first page on Wikivoyage, having searched for information on a hotel, gallery etc. If not it saves going through another page to get to details of the next street. I think that it is unlikely that the central Edinburgh districts will be changed soon as they are based on areas which are well established on the ground, but the outer ones could be split if the content grows. I am happy to restrict the list to those districts with a common border, but this means only missing out one or two districts from the list for any district. Thanks a lot for all your additions to this article. 23 November 2015 (UTC)
