Releasing a fish with a hook[edit]

We advised:

"If a hook is deep inside of a fish's mouth [...] If this doesn't work, cut the line as far back as you safely can to release the fish."

If you cannot remove the hook, I would not release the fish. Can it really live on with a hook deep down its mouth? Wouldn't that mean extreme suffering and a more or less certain death before long? Unless it is a severely endangered species I wouldn't hesitate to kill it right there and use it as food, even if it is undersized or whatever. If it is, well, I might try harder to remove the hook and perhaps call for advice. –LPfi (talk) 09:41, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
