The true story of the city's name

[edit]

Translation:

" Groznaya Fortress was founded on 22 of June 1818. The chosen site was situated in 6 km from the entry into Khankaly gorge. This gorge was formed between two small ridges, and was considered impregnable. The fortress was meant to block access to the plain from Khankaly gorge for the Chechens. Five thousands of Russian soldiers have built the fortress in 4 months. This place was then considered the most dangerous spot of the North Caucasus, hence fortress' name: "The Terrible". The fortress had a hexagonal shape, it was encircled by a moat 20 metres wide. Each edge of the hexagon had a bastion equipped with canon.
