Talk:Los Angeles/West

This article seems to have been left around since we decided on the Southern California hierarchy. I don't know if it's got information in it, but if so, it needs to be merged to the correct region article, West Side (Los Angeles County). Actually it was started later, which is originally why i moved stuff here since it seemed to be the popular one... the other had hardly been touched since 2003. It's kind of a tricky one. I see the logic you were working with in 2003 when trying to divide up LA County, so it seems that West Side (Los Angeles County) is from that. But in trying to make an article about LA the "city" (in quotes because that's a hard term to define) there is definitely a 'Westside' that may differ and is definitely part of LA city. For instance where do listings for Palms, Sawtelle, Century City, Westwood, West LA (a small district on the Westside, near the Getty), Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Bel-Air go? To the best of my recollection they are all districts of the city of LA. Yet separated from say, La Brea Ave area that is also part of the city of LA by some actual cities like West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. I don't think that they necessarily currently all require their own articles, so my logic would be to describe all that in Los Angeles/West, since they are indeed districts of LA city (someone correct me if I'm wrong about citihoods).

My thoughts for the city of LA, longer term:

• Los Angeles/Downtown
• Los Angeles/Hollywood
• Los Angeles/East (silverlake, echo park, koreatown, etc)
• Los Angeles/East LA (an actual district of the city east of downtown, but I'm not sure that it will need an article - just mentioning since someone brought it up on the LA/East talk page)
• Los Angeles/Venice - currently at Venice (California), but also part of LA city.

• Other areas that may need district pages: Mid-Wilshire, Melrose, Pico area... If LA is going to fit into the existing Project:Huge city article template then no actual listings should be on the top city page... meaning we'd need to figure out something for the above areas and more. Maybe a Los Angeles/Central (I don't like that, but maybe someone has a better idea for name) that can encompass the areas between Fairfax and La Brea/Highland, and around Santa Monica Blvd, Melrose, Beverly Blvd, Third Street... And Hancock Park, don't know if there's anywhere to stay, but certainly stuff to eat and do...

From the city point of view, I don't see Malibu as part of the Westside, I think most think of that as it's own entity. Same with Agoura Hills and surrounds.

Nearby cities that should and do have their own articles:

• West Hollywood
• Beverly Hills
• Santa Monica
• Malibu
• Culver City

Re: the southern part of the city, I don't know as much about that. Currently there's a Los Angeles/Harbor Area, but everything listed on it are actual cities, and not districts of LA city. Probably better to stick with South Bay (Los Angeles County). But I don't know in the south what parts are actual cities and what are districts of LA City.

Same with Marina del Rey and Playa del Rey...

Also, regarding the previous discussion at Southern California hierarchy the link to the LA regions page is now broken, but I found this on their website, which may be what was being referred to. It shows all of LA city from downtown to the beaches as the "Westside of Los Angeles County" - but again, that drastically differs from what Angelenos would call the "Westside". So I'm thinking there's a need for both pages to exist. Also in that conversation it seems agreed that the parts of Los Angeles County that are distant from downtown, but still technically part of Los Angeles should use the district format, like Los Angeles/Hollywood... Urban Outfitters

I've deleted Urban Outfitters as a */buy/* listing. I think this qualifies under the #Boring Places policy as a chain, especially in this area with a lot of unique locations. —The preceding comment was added by MisterCustomer (talk • contribs)

American Apparel and Buffalo Exchange probably also qualify since they are chains, although it may make sense to leave them for now since the section would otherwise be empty. I think there's still room for improvement, but I've tried to break this down by location, similar to how the listings are organized in Santa Monica. There are a lot of unique stores within those locations, but I think this makes more sense than a West L.A. Mega List. In the same vein, there are a lot of good restraunts not listed, but I'm hesitant to start adding to the already-bulky mid-range category. This district covers such a broad area, might it be preferable to organize geographically rather than by price? I'm probably not going all the way to Beverly Crest if I get hungry in Mar Vista. -- MisterCustomer (talk) 20:55, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
