Climate

[edit]

As far as I'm aware (and can see, in statistics), climate as such is not different here from the rest of the country. Cities in the mid-eastern part of the country tend to be slightly warmer in summer, but we're talking 1 or 2 degrees C. at most. The idea to have a specific idea of usual weather during the 4 days marches makes sense, but wouldn't it then be better to make it a normal text mention for that month, instead of a full Dutch climate box? It might also be good to mention how the marches have been cancelled last minute once or twice, due to extreme weather conditions. JuliasTravels (talk) 16:56, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Just to make sure - I am not that much into marching and it's been a good 15 years since I've last been to Nijmegen with bleak prospects on returning anytime soon, I just wanted to object to the removal of what I find relevant information that is best contained within the article. It is not only relevant to people marching, I just used it as an example. Information that the temperature does not differ from the national average is just as much information as the fact that it does differ.
I could agree that maxima or minima are a bit more trivial than useful, but I always do look up average temperatures for the month in the cities I go to - "quite like the national average" just doesn't cut the mustard, I then have to find the national average and guess how close it is going to be. Same with rainfall - milimetres are perhaps not what I'd be looking for, but number of rainy days per month, plus average sunshine hours per day is what I always check. Last but not least, we could perhaps have this information formatted into a nicer table I've seen in other articles, but the bottom line for me is that it is relevant, useful and makes sense to have at city level rather than referring the reader to national or regional averages. Why not just using {{Climate}} with additional information concerning the marches. --WiDi (talk) 19:40, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, of course climate is relevant and I have no objection to the information itself. And yes, if we include it I would much prefer a more stylish, concise box like WiDi proposes, just for aesthetic reasons. What seems odd to me, however, is that basically the same climate box should then be included in every town article in the country. I appreciate that in many countries regional differences can be significant, but in the Netherlands, they are just negligible. Where in the Netherlands you go will have no impact for you as a traveller in terms of what to pack or expect: you do of course have to pack according to season and general Dutch climate. So the question really is whether it's desirable to have that info at every city when there are no relevant differences. We don't repeat nationally applicable information about e.g. "Stay healthy", "Respect" or the use of OV-chipcards in every city guide, even though they're all relevant no matter which town you visit. Why is climate different? JuliasTravels (talk) 20:23, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I beg to differ about it. There is a marked difference between weather in Vlissingen and weather in Maastricht. I used to spend weeks at a time in the Netherlands travelling extensively across the country, and in some seasons I found Nijmegen to be very nice while at the same time Nordwijk totally unbearable. This is NOT the same info, there are some differences between the different municipalities. PrinceGloria (talk) 20:50, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well of course, weather can be different throughout the country. But that's not the same as climate. JuliasTravels (talk) 21:05, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
That's the reason why weather is topic number one in the Netherlands. However, it may have added value for a large or a touristic city. What can be done is putting the climate information in the region article. It's just a suggestion. --WiDi (talk) 21:09, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sure, why not. As for Dutch weather, I went for a walk today as it was a delightful sunny autumn day here. Half an hour away hail and a whirlwind caused lots of damage, it's all over the news. When you think about it, one might argue that any climate info on the Netherlands except for a general description of seasons is pretty much useless for a traveller ;-) JuliasTravels (talk) 21:39, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I'll be working on this article some more in coming days and will introduce the relevant weather information for the marches. Allow me a little bit of time and then we can always discuss if it's acceptable or should be adapted. JuliasTravels (talk) 20:47, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
