Wouldn't our naming convention ("most common English name") make this "Pearl Islands"? - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 19:13, 19 July 2006 (EDT)

It depends on the destination, of course. We don't mechanically translate names into English (we call it Los Angeles, not The Angels), but if there is a common name used in English media, books, etc., we prefer to use that to the local name. TGN gives this place with "Pearl Islands" as the English name. We should probably get some more data points, though... --(WT-en) Evan 19:33, 19 July 2006 (EDT)

Given the popularity of the various "Survivor: Pearl Islands" episodes (around 20 million viewers per week as I recall), the fact that the Wikipedia article is "Pearl Islands", and your guide recommendations above I think it makes sense to change the name. -- (WT-en) Ryan 19:53, 19 July 2006 (EDT)

I wasn't suggesting that we move Tierra del Fuego to "Land of the Fire", Tennessee to "Place Where It Bends", Boca Raton to "Rat Mouth", or Hamburg to "Burger", just pointing out that "Pearl Islands" seems to be the most common term used by the English-language Sites We Do Not Link To.
