Providence is known as “the creative” capital of the state of Rhode Island and the most populous city. Providence was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams a religious exile from Massachusetts who wanted to establish a religiously tolerant state. The city not only became a haven for settlers but later became recognized for its jewelry and silverware industry. Downtown providence is one of the busiest areas of the state thriving on tourism, public transit and creativity.

By car I-95 is the most useful especially for those coming from the Boston and New York areas. Take exit 22A toward Downtown

By plane

TF Green Airport in Warwick, RI, conveniently located one mile off I-95 at the end of Exit #13. From there you can easily take RIPTA (Rhode Island Public Transit Authority): Route #14 East Greenwich, Narragansett, Newport, North Kingstown, Providence (express), Warwick (south).       • MBTA Commuter rail service between South Station (Boston) and dowtown Providence will be extended to T.F. Green Airport in late 2010!

  • Rhode Island State House was designed by the New York firm of McKim, Mead & White, the State House is sculpted from white Georgia marble and sits atop Smith Hill in downtown Providence. Construction took nine years to complete, beginning in 1895 and finishing in 1904.
