Talk:Providence
40 minutes from Logan?
[edit]Maybe if you drive a Ferarri. One hour is a far better average time without traffic.
Disambiguation
[edit]Does Providence really need disambiguation? Can't we just have a Providence article, or are there other relatively famous Providences that I don't know about? -(WT-en) nick 21:20, 20 Aug 2004 (EDT)
- There are a couple of other Providences (see WikiPedia:Providence), but I think the one in RI probably passes the much-more-famous test. I'll move the page. --(WT-en) Evan 11:59, 21 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Districts
[edit]This city is now partially districted, with Providence/Federal Hill and Providence/College Hill, and the rest of the city covered in the main article. This is pretty clearly not how we are supposed to do things, and I would suggest merging those two back into this article, except for the fact that they are actually quite nice little district articles. So ideally, we should come up with a comprehensive district hierarchy for the city with no gaps nor overlap. It's a pretty small city, though, and should not have many (I'd be wary of having more than 3 or 4), if any at all. Thoughts? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 15:24, 27 March 2009 (EDT)
- Since the University of Rhode Island use Wikivoyage as part of their writing class, we're going to have an influx of new inexperienced contributors 2-3 times every year - the current mess is a clear example of that happens then - I think we really need to come up with a plan, and a map, so we get all the contribution that apparently will keep pouring in at a fairly regular basis, in the right place... So anyone familiar with Providence who can suggest something?
- There are some pretty clear cut ones:
- Hope-College Hill - (East of Canal street, I95 and the railway up to the city limit in the north, and the cove to the east) includes College Hill, Hope and Blackstone
- East Providence well, east providence, across the habour/cove
- North Providence
- South Providence
- Other than that I'm unsure, but we should try to divide them up
- Charles -> North Providence?
- Elmhurst -> North Providence?
- Elmwood -> South Providence?
- Federal Hill
- Lower South -> South Providence?
- Mount Hope -> Hope-College Hill
- Mount Pleasant -> ?
- Olneyville -> ?
- Reservoir -> South Providence?
- Silver Lake -> ?
- Smith Hill
- Upper South -> South Providence?
- Valley -> ?
- Wanskuck -> North Providence?
- Washington Park -> South Providence?
- West End -> Adding West Providence District to include Broadway and the Armory District--(WT-en) Mcamp38 16:45, 14 June 2012 (EDT)

- I'm not very familiar with the city, but I do hope we can get beyond "partially districted", as I don't think that's a good state to leave an article in.(WT-en) Texugo 01:25, 9 March 2010 (EST)
- While its true that all the "districts" listed above exist is it really necessary to include them all in a travel guide? Seriously... While Downtown and the East Side certainly have distinct identities and attractions outside of these areas a description of just Providence would do just fine. You certainly dont need a special section for tourist attractions in neighborhoods like Silver Lake or Elmwood... —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 98.175.221.41 (talk • contribs)
- As a member of this site and a resident of providence, this districting is truly screwed up. Most of the problem arises from the fact that so many things on the individual districts is not present on the main page. I'm going to be migrating some entries over to the main page —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Mcamp38 (talk • contribs)
- Shouldn't it go the other way around? (WT-en) LtPowers 21:25, 14 June 2012 (EDT)

- The official list of neighborhoods and boundaries can be found at http://local.provplan.org/profiles/ I agree that not all of the districts should have a separate travel guide as they are mostly residential. Please do not use "North Providence" for Wanskuck, Charles or Elmhurst as North Providence is a different neighboring town. --Mu301 (talk) 04:13, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
Content shift
[edit]I've moved the content that was here to Talk:Providence/Content Shift. It was article content with top-level headers and it made it hard to use the talk page. (WT-en) LtPowers 18:55, 28 July 2010 (EDT)
- I don't see it. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 13:07, 29 July 2010 (EDT)
- Whoops, I must have forgotten to save it. (WT-en) LtPowers 21:22, 29 July 2010 (EDT)
Downtown
[edit]Someone has added the brand new article Providence/Downtown. Does it fit within the current districting scheme? (WT-en) LtPowers 18:55, 28 July 2010 (EDT)
- I really don't know. Now someone added Providence/Fox Point. These new districts don't make navigation any easier if they aren't well thought-out. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 18:42, 12 October 2011 (EDT)
- Downtown should probably have a page. (marketing from the City often refers to the area as "Downcity" though it is rare for people to refer to it that way) The bigger problem is that many of the listings are not really in Downtown. Atwells Ave. is in Federal Hill and Thayer St. is College Hill. --Mu301 (talk) 04:19, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Districts again
[edit]Is the current number and border of districts right? Should there be districts at all? Hobbitschuster (talk) 22:21, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
- It is flawed. North Providence is not actually part of Providence, it is actually a separate city and should be breadcrumbed as such. That said, there are also "northern neighborhoods of Providence" which I guess demand their own article, though it may be a small article at this point. Similarly, East Providence is a separate city. These two separate cities should be grey rather than colored on the map, and not listed. Beside that, the districts look OK, and I think there is too much content to merge it into a single article again. That said, the exact boundaries of the districts are unclear since the district map is not strictly geographical. Perhaps by locating the multitude of restaurants and stores in each district article, we could pin down the exact borders of the articles. Ar2332 (talk) 08:13, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
- Actually, let me edit that. There is a comprehensive neighborhood map here and the exact boundaries are in OpenStreetMap! Ar2332 (talk) 09:08, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
- Well, the boundaries of College Hill and Fox Point are in OpenStreetMap. That said, the other Wikivoyage districts can be traced relatively easily from the Wikipedia map. Ar2332 (talk) 09:25, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
