1st-person account

[edit]

As Wikivoyage is a co-authored website, and blog-like posts are one of the non-goals of site, I've moved this 1st-person account here, in case it might help an editor or reader:

Report from June 2017 boat trip: We ordered a trip with Polar Charter. Because too few had signed up for the trip on that particular day, the guide from Polar Charter attempted to notify us in advance that we could either (1) get our money back or (2) go another day with Polar Charter or (3) go on the same day with the boat from HTG. When he was unable to reach us on the day before, he met us the next morning at our pick-up point to notify us in person (instead of simply leaving us to ourselves after he had not been able to reach us by phone, to our great relief). After we decided to go on the same day with the boat from HTG, he drove us to the harbour and made sure we got on the boat without problems.

The boat we went with, MS Billefjord, seems to be a step down compared with Polar Charter's MS Polargirl (judging from the outside as we never boarded the latter). It is more than thirty years old, is a bit worn down and has a strange smell. On the other hand, the guide on the boat was excellent and clearly enjoyed her work. The rest of the crew was also nice. The meal we were served was just about OK. If your main concern it to not go hungry, a buffet of 'whale meat, baked salmon, pork rib, pasta salad, rice and locally baked bread' is great; but don't expect a well-composed dish.
