Afrikaans translation of vlei

[edit]

The Afrikaans word vlei best translates to marsh or wetlands in English. Afrikaans for the English word valley is vallei. (WT-en) NJR_ZA 12:04, 6 January 2007 (EST)

Could you write something about the translation of "Sossus"? I found several totally different explainations in the internet. Thank You! --(WT-en) Flip666 15:37, 6 January 2007 (EST)
As far as I know, "Sossus" is not an Afrikaans word (I grew up Afrikaans speaking, but mostly speak English these days). It might be a bushman name or from one of the other languages indigenous to that area. I'll see if I can find any additional info when I am back in Johannesburg next week. Only reliable reference I could find to the meaning of the word sossus is from a very old (around 1985) Southern African AA travel guide I still have. It states that sossus is a bushman word meaning place where the water gathers. So in effect Sossusvlei will translate to marsh marsh in English. (WT-en) NJR_ZA
