Reason for "long history"

I don't understand this sentence:

"Yamaguchi Prefecture has a relatively long history as it is located close to South Korea and China."

Its history would be shorter if it were further from South Korea and China? Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:24, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

I believe northern Japan is considered to be where people first settled in Japan (excluding Okinawa) if long history is to be taken literally, but West Japan is considered to have had a richer, more developed culture and more goings on historically. With that said, although it sat between Yamato and Korea/China/Kyushu, none of modern Yamaguchi Prefecture was of such high historical importance early on in terms of its ports, population, spiritual sites (in the Kojiki), etc. I imagine it must be a reference to the idea of it being in the "richest" and more "civilized" part of Japan in ancient times along important old trade and travel routes.
