See[edit]

  • 1 Bargabhima Temple. Believed to be more than a thousand years old, it was sculpted by Lord Viswakarma. The temple holds an old icon of the Goddess ‘Tara’, another face of Goddess Kali. According to mythology, Devi Bargabhima was creator of Tamralipta, once a great port of ancient India. This temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Puranas say that the small finger of left feet of Parvati fell here when Lord Vishnu cut her sacred body into several pieces to make Lord Shiva quiet.
  • Matangani Sahid Smarak. During the Quit India movement of 1942, Matangini Hazra became a martyr at Tamluk. Later, Mahatma Gandhi appreciated her bravery and titled her as ‘Birangana’. This monument is a homage to her by prime minister Indira Gandhi.
  • 2 Tamluk Rajbari. It was built in 5th century BC, and engulfs rich traditions and history.
  • Tamralipta Archaeological Museum. It contains artifacts of copper, inscribed copper templates and a copper plate of Greek inscriptions. No entry fee.
