Taung is a town of 18,000 people (2011) in the North West Province. Taung is mainly known for its cultural background and holding cultural events such as the annual Cultural Calabash.

Even though Taung is a small town it has many villages.

The name means place of the lion and was named after Tau, the King of the Barolong. Tau is the Tswana word for lion.

Taung has recreational fields such as "taung covered ground" where many of sports activities take place.

Here is also the Mmabana where many many activities are offered such as dance (any kind of a dance), drama, karate, music, love-life programmes and gymnastics.

Taung is known for the skull of a child that was found there in one of the villages, Buxton.

Taung also has a big large dam (the Taung Dam) which was built by President Kgosi Mangope in the early years of presidency. He was also the founder of Mmabana taung and Mangope dam.
