Terchová is a mountain town with 4,000 inhabitants in Central Slovakia. It is a nice and convenient base to hike the Malá Fatra, especially the Jánošík Holes and Chleb trails.

Bus stop: Terchová centrum, next to the church. Buses to Žilina and the surrounding villages.

Get around

Take the bus to Biely Potok, Štefanová or Vrátna for more hiking trails.

Many trails for hiking and cycling: get a map of the Malá Fatra at the tourist office (€2.50).

Jánošík Holes (Jánošíkova Diery) trails: a stroll among forests, crevices and waterfalls with a hint of via ferrata, most impressive on Horné Diery. Start from Hotel Diery near Biely Potok (bus from Terchová every few hours).

Jánošíková Koliba (1 km on the road to Biely Potok, soon after Hotel Jánošík): good local and Slovak specialties. €3-6 for most main dishes.

Many pensions (penzión) and homestays (privát) along the riverside road starting opposite the church and in its neighbourhood. Typically €10/person for a privát.
