Hello, HeatherP! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub.

Hi, Heather. Good to see another person adding content about China. There's a few already, but we definitely need more.

However, your titles Jinzhong City - Linghsi City and Jinzhong City - Lingshi City (Shanxi Merchant family compounds) aren't in our standard format. We don't normally have articles on "attractions" as opposed to "destinations", (see links above for definitions). Information such as you are adding might go in the "See" or "Get out" section of a destination article. We have one for Jinzhong; you might add one for Lingshi; that's our standard format for city names (no "City").

On the other hand, it sounds like these are outside the cities, so maybe they'd be best handled in a separate article. The title would then be Shanxi merchant family compounds (small 'm' on 'merchant'). It might be done as an itinerary or a travel topic. There are standard templates for either.

If you need a hand getting this stuff into our standard format, give me a shout. (WT-en) Pashley 11:14, 7 November 2009 (EST)

Dear Pashley, Thank you for the helpful guidance. I am new to posting things here, so any advice is welcome. I thought about how to handle this for quite some time but wasn't sure what to do. These family compounds are spread out over some distance in a part of Shanxi which is rather spread out. It seems rather odd to create an entry for each of the small towns where they are located, especially as there is nothing else located in some of these towns. It also didn't seem right to enter them as all being in Pingyao, as some are a one hour drive away. But maybe the "Get Out" section for Pingyao would be most appropriate? These are some of the most famous sites in all of Shanxi Province, so they should definitely appear somewhere on the main Shanxi page. Would you suggest itinerary or travel topics for this? I have finished the section this morning, but understand that it should be reformatted to meet Wikistandards. Please let me know what you suggest. Thank you. - Heather (WT-en) HeatherP 19:09, 7 November 2009 (EST)

I've moved it, thrown in an itinerary template and linked to it from Shanxi, Pingyao and List of itineraries. It probably needs a bit more text to fill out the template and some other links. I'll leave anything else to you. (WT-en) Pashley 21:58, 7 November 2009 (EST)

Pashley, We were working in parallel, I think. I followed your earlier suggestion and have put it under the "Get Out" section for Pingyao since most people combine a trip to Pingyao with visits to some or all of these family compounds. I have also added quite a bit more information. I shall keep working on cleaning up the Shanxi section, although I'm getting closer. If I have some questions for you (for instance, how to load photos?), how should I best contact you? Thanks.````

My talk page. But I've no idea about photos.
Are you perchance a teacher, like so many travellers in China? If so, any comment on Project:Star_nominations#Teaching_English? (WT-en) Pashley 00:41, 8 November 2009 (EST)

Pashley, No, I'm a student from Hong Kong. (American citizen). I have a real interest in history and have spent a couple of weeks traveling around Shanxi visting the many historical sights there. They have so many, and so few people know about them, even in China. I have only listed the best ones on Wikipedia, but there are many other good ones there too. Heather, to load photos use the uploads & bug reports link on the top left hand sidebar. This takes you to Wikivoyage Shared where all images should be uploaded. Once you have done that, you can link the image into any article by using the embedded image icon next to large A on the editing toolbar. When placing an image into any article please pay attention to sizing and justification. The mark up for an image should look something like [[Image:Imagename.jpg|300px|right]]. This would place into the article an image called imagename.jpg, 300 px wide and right justified. Last but not least, please read the Wikivoyage copyright policy for images. Do not hesitate to ask if you need more help.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:01, 8 November 2009 (EST)

Dear Burmesedays, Thank you for the very helpful instruction. (WT-en) HeatherP 01:04, 8 November 2009 (EST)
