Regarding the vector version
[edit]Alright, as of now I have everything set up so that I've exported all the paths into Illustrator (using the "Paths to Illustrator" feature). I'm currently hunting for a copy of illustrator. Email me: comrade009@gmail.com, for what I have so far. All I need is for someone to download it, colorize it (using the same color values i used) and add the text using the font "Coolvetica." Shouldn't take too long. Meanwhile, I'll try to finish it myself. --(WT-en) Comrade009 16:45, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- Hi! I'd like to have a copy of a vectorized version, but I don't have (and have no intention of getting Illustrator, legally or otherwise). You might like to try Inkscape which uses the Wikivoyage preferred vector format, SVG.
- For what it's worth, I prefer to discourage the use of proprietary formats, especially if the commercial software which produces the document hasn't been paid for. It's much better to use Free Software and have a clear conscience (I like Inkscape better than Illustrator anyhow). ;) -- (WT-en) Mark 05:21, 1 Jul 2005 (EDT)
- I love your logo! There are probably others here who are better with Inkscape than I, but if you win and everyone else is busy, I could make the SVG version for you. I'll be on vacation until mid August, but you can send me an e-mail if you want my help.

- That would be absolutely fantastic. --(WT-en) Comrade009 22:49, 28 Jul 2005 (EDT)
Round 3
[edit] I like how this logo accentuates the theme of "putting the puzzle together." No edge pieces means that there is still room to add even more things. And this time I didn't capitalize the T, but sadly, I didn't capitalize the w either. It just didn't look as good uppercase as lowercase. Plus, many product names are no longer being capitalized in order to seem "friendlier:" iPod, eBay, etc... However, this is the only font I have tried so far. I just REALLy hate going through individual fonts; for me, its the most annoying part of graphic design. If anyone wants to, they can go to 1001fonts.com, enter "wikivoyage" as the sample text, and look away. Feel free to post font suggestions here, or any suggestions for that matter. --(WT-en) Comrade009 15:56, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- That's a nice synthesis of different concepts. Personally I find the lack of capital letters in this case seems more inviting, but I can understand how someone else might see it as juvenile. I haven't yet looked at different fonts. I would be a little concerned about how well the text and symbols scale both up and down, but overall, it looks good. -- (WT-en) Mikito 17:35, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- Very nice! The colors are a bit, um, Microsoft-y though — I'm reminded of the Windows logo... (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:48, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- Oh... my... god... you're right. I did not notice that. --(WT-en) Comrade009 22:29, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- Think of it this way...didn't Microsoft once use the slogan "Where do you want to go today?" Seriously, Microsoft probably chose the colors they did for the same reason as you--something with contrast. -- (WT-en) Mikito 09:29, 27 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- Random idea of the day: could you trim the edges of the 'puzzle' to have it form a globe? (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:50, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- I'm not sure what you mean. Do you want me to make the edge circular? Or do you want a 3d effect, like the puzzle wrapping around a sphere? As for the colors, well... I wanted colors that contrasted, but I made them a little washed out so that they wouldn't clash. I initially had the idea of using three symbols, and using the colors of traffic lights. But then I added a fourth and had to choose another color. I liked blue. Suggestions?--(WT-en) Comrade009 22:29, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- Random idea of the day: could you trim the edges of the 'puzzle' to have it form a globe? (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:50, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- I'm not sure what I mean either =), but since you had the globe earlier I was thinking how to squeeze it in. But having a globe composed of puzzle pieces, esp. if it's 3D, is getting a bit too close for comfort to the Wikipedia globe... (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:51, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- I think the easiest way to fit in a globe would be to use it in place of one of the icons. The globe would have to be redrawn and made much more simple. I don't think the overall effect of the logo would be as good if you inserted a globe like that, though. -- (WT-en) Mikito 09:29, 27 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- Actually, if I redesigned the globe, I could kill two birds with one stone. We could replace the train design (which is quite complex compared to the others, and doesn't scale as well) and stick in the globe. Just a thought. --(WT-en) Comrade009 12:52, 27 Jun 2005 (EDT)

- I realize this kind of sucks, but: I'm concerned that the puzzle-piece motif implies a more formal relationship with Wikipedia than we actually have. Compare the Wikipedia logo. --(WT-en) Evan 14:05, 27 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- I'm not to concerned. I think the differences are enough not to worry. Plus, I readily admitted that this was inspired by wikipedia. 1) Mine is in color, wikipedia's isn't. 2) They still have their distinctive globe shape, mine is 2D 3) Theirs is a lot more detailed, mine is more stylized. I can always offer two alternatives on the voter page and have people decide. --(WT-en) Comrade009 14:25, 27 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- I like it. But I think the icons are too travel-oriented. I would have liked a bed for "sleep", a beer-glass for "drink", a plate for "eat", a tower/church/temple for "see" etc. I realize a 10-brick puzze would be terrible. Maybe Plane, Glass, Building, Hike? --130.225.212.15 10:38, 4 Jul 2005 (EDT)
Round 2
[edit]<gallery> Image:comrade0091bw.png|This is the previous logo, but in black and white. I think it still packs a punch Image:comrade0092.png|The old logo, without the globe. I think the globe should go. (WT-en) Mikito had a good point about it's reproducibility. And it's quite detailed when compared to the rest of the image. Image:comrade0093.png|Text in the middle... the jury is still out for me </gallery> Alernatives to capatilizing "Travel":
- WIKItravel
- wikiTRAVEL
- WIKITRAVEL
- Different fonts
- one is block, the other is outline
- Separate lines
Well, I'm still convinced that the T should be capatalized. Feel free to argue otherwise. I'll go recheck the FAQ. --(WT-en) Comrade009 23:52, 24 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- An alternative to capitalizing the T would be to use a regular or bold typeface for the Wiki part and an italic typeface for the travel part, as in Wikitravel or WIKITRAVEL. That would also visually suggest the idea of moving (plunging) forward.
- After just trying it myself (see above), I now think that my prior suggestion looks amateurish, at least with my screen font. Perhaps an all italics version? Let's see: WIKITRAVEL or Wikivoyage. Or perhaps using an outline font for the Wiki part and a regular bold font for the travel?
- Just so you know, I don't personally care if the T is capitalized or not. It's just that what the FAQ says one thing and the logo says another, it doesn't make sense. -- (WT-en) Mikito 00:03, 25 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- You're right, it doesn't make sense. Lowercase "t" is the correct spelling. The capital "T" in the current logo is one of the reasons we want to get rid of it.
- Also: I really like this logo; the colors are very sharp. I think it translates very nicely into black-and-white. I'd suggest two things: 1) it's got lots of detailed lines; could it be simplified? 2) it's got lots of travel, and not a lot of wiki. Any way to fit in some idea of collaboration and cooperation? --(WT-en) Evan 12:43, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- Which parts of it are too detailed? The airplane and the hiker are VERY simplified. The train I kind of agree with you on: it doesn't look good too small. The car is borderline too detailed. I personally think it's good the way it is. BTW, I've decided to capitulate; the next version won't have the T capitalized. Now, as for the whole wiki theme, I might try to incorporate arrows into it, like with the original logo. I also might take the globe from the original design and rework it into the logo. The old globe was stylized, and had a "networking" feel to it. I'll keep on brainstorming. So for the next revision I got:
- make the t lower case
- simplify the train logo
- incorporate the "wiki" theme (this'll be the toughest)
- Thanks for all the ideas! --66.188.138.70 13:57, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)
- You're right about the detail; it's the train and car where there's lots of little lines. --(WT-en) Evan 14:02, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Wikivoyage logo first design
[edit]
Good start, but I should mention that the FAQ says that Wikivoyage has only one capital letter, the 'W'. Your logo looks like something that would scale well to different sizes, with the possible exception of the globe. Have you considered removing it just to see what it would look like? Also, you might play around with the placement of the text--how would it look if it were placed between the rows of icons? Or on top?
You might also consider how your logo will look like if it were printed in black and white--will the colors as printed in b/w end up being to dark? -- (WT-en) Mikito 23:24, 24 Jun 2005 (EDT)
I see the potential issue with the globe. Its okay when big, but if made to small it could get pixelated. If I made a black and white version I would probably just remove the colors, as that would have the added benefit of being true black and white, and not grayscale. I tried the capitalization as was mentioned, but this way just had a stronger impression. I think that what is happening is that the term "wiki" is growing in popularity. For new users, it seems daunting enough that there are hundreds of projects, each with the prefix wiki. The all seem to blend together. I think that capitalizing the T allows the travel aspect to stand out more: even if a person has no idea what a wiki is, it will be more obvious that this is a travel site. The opposite is also true: a person might see the wiki, but not be familiar with the travel, and think "oh, a travel wiki? that's genius."
In short, I think that "wiki" and "travel" are two unique concepts that become linked. Hence, both uppercase, but one word. Thanks for all the suggestions though, I'll get on it right away.--(WT-en) Comrade009 23:34, 24 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Coolvetica
[edit]Hey! I really like this font for some reason, but if we wind up going ahead with your logotype I'd really like to do some kerning. I think the vertical letters (iki) are too close together and the ave are too far apart. Of course that's a tiny thing.
I hope you don't mind, but I've got a copy of Larrabie's coolvetica, and am going to try doing some stuff with it and the compass star. -- (WT-en) Mark 11:17, 20 Jul 2005 (EDT)
