Hi there. The English you use is obviously different from mine, but the phrase "there are a number" is problematic, because should it be "is" or "are"? My edit eliminates the problem, yet you presume to call my English "bad". Be serious, my friend. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:25, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. There is nothing problematic with "there are a number" because, to quote, "Some singular expressions referring to more than one person or thing are commonly used with plural verbs, 'a number of' is one of those expressions. ‘There are a number of people in that room.’" (Reference [1]) Your edit not only was flawed in respect of replacing is with are but introduced another grammatical error. I do not understand the comment " Be serious, my friend", —The preceding comment was added by 171.5.250.62 (talkcontribs)
You're dismissively accusing me of using "bad English". Regardless of what usage you like, that's a frivolous accusation. It's nice that the BBC thinks "there are a number" is unproblematic, but they don't speak for every English speaker or reader, and there are certain problematic phrasings that are better to avoid. I won't make a World Court case of this, of course. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:45, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello - your edit contained two grammatical errors, and consequently "bad English"' is an appropriate description. Despite evidence from an extremely well respected organisation that "there are a number" is grammatical valid you continue to allege it is problematic. This, combined with the aggressive tone of your recent comment that includes sarcastic passive aggression, suggests that you should review your conduct towards others. Equally advisable is to consider your motivation for editing Vikivoyage as it would appear you believe your views and opinions are preeminent, and others are automatically wrong should they disagree. —The preceding comment was added by 171.5.251.212 (talkcontribs)
Actually, it strikes me that you have the views you attribute to me. You seem to consider that whatever doesn't conform to your notion of British English is "bad English". What's wrong with ending a sentence with "are"? Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:02, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It would be advisable for you to consider that whilst you are entitled to your opinion these are not necessarily true. Another example is the above claim: "Actually, it strikes me that you have the views you attribute to me." This flawed claim is based on me advising of accepted usage, and as published by recognised authorities. Your views are based solely on your own personal preferences, and you have reacted negatively and unconstructively when comments, and references, counter to these have been provided. I also do not understand your claim of "You seem to consider that whatever doesn't conform to your notion of British English is bad English". —The preceding comment was added by 171.5.250.89 (talkcontribs)
Well, I do appreciate your documentation of how "a number of people are" is acceptable, but what's your documentation that ending a sentence with "are" is "bad English"? Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:12, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This quotation is appropriate [2] —The preceding comment was added by 171.5.250.135 (talkcontribs)
And you think I'm "passive aggressive"? Your calling me a stupid pig doesn't substitute for a documentation that ending a sentence with "are" is "bad English", but it certainly does reflect on what you are. Goodnight. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:17, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I did not call you a stupid pig, and to suggest otherwise is either very silly or deceitful. What I did do is reference a well-known phrase to highlight your refusal to listen to reason and be constructive, as well as expecting me to provide free lessons in English. If you are unhappy with the progress of the discussion then you should consider your behaviour, including the tone of messages, as you set the course. That you continue to post messages on the Talk page of the article is strongly indicative of your need to be "right". —The preceding comment was added by 171.5.251.147 (talkcontribs)
I don't need "English lessons." And that's my last work to this particular IP's user talk page. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:32, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That is a very strange claim given you have made repeated grammatical errors, refused to consider you were mistaken until unequivocal evidence was presented and then asked for 'documentation' about English. Your petulant final comment only reinforces the earlier evidence regarding your psychological needs for editing Wikivoyage.
