dmoz[edit]

Hi Evan,

I would like to tell you that I submitted the application for the Wikivoyage ja: to the dmoz today, following your advice. By the way, I have a question. Have you checked if the "wikivoyage" tag is correctly working on the dmoz, recently? I tried to display the En: Main page from the dmoz, but I couldn't. When I search and crick the "Wikivoyage" tug, it displays the odd titled ("メインペぅジ", it seems like Japanese but actually have no meaning) incomplete page. The result was the same when I tried on the French page (Or... those problems are from the system of my PC? Well, I have no idea). --(WT-en) Shoestring 09:16, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

My friend is getting the same problem on her browser. See [1]. (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:32, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

Update[edit]

Hey there. Just thought I'd give you a little update to let you know what I've been up to.

  • Ca: Been on an insane article-creating spree. I think I created about 400 articles in the last couple of weeks. I also got IsIn going and I made a factbox template for countries.
  • Es: and Pt: Policing new edits, removing old external links and making general style/format edits. I've been working to improve the organization, particularly of metropolis districts and regions/states/provinces within countries.
  • Ro: I went on an all-out crusade and 1) eliminated the External Links section from every single article, and 2) replaced the old manual HTML breadcrumb navigation with IsIn for every single article. Also made a lot of style edits and implemented a factbox template for countries. I'm trying to get (WT-ro) Vlad to give us a start-from-scratch re-translation of at least the huge city template-- as you probably know, that language version never really had a good template set-up, so the existing articles are at the moment in a variety of formats. Once we get a huge city template, I think (WT-en) Rmx and I can create the other templates from it. When that is done, I'll probably go crazy putting articles in the new format and creating new articles. I think we can get Ro: back on its feet.
  • Fr: (WT-en) Rmx and I have convinced the French version to eliminate its External links sections as well. I've been doing a lot of that, and making some style/format edits. I'd like to convince Ja: to eliminate its external links sections as well.
  • It: Occasional edits. I'd like to get involved more, but this version moves fast, a good deal busier than other language versions.

Also I have a question. Perhaps my search wasn't very thorough, but I'm wondering if somewhere there is a list of MediaWiki pages like the ones that put text in the menu bar on the left, etc. Also, are MediaWiki page titles the same for all language versions or have some of them been translated? As always, thanks for your support! (WT-en) Texugo 12:42, 8 April 2007 (EDT)

Ro:[edit]

Hi again, Evan. Guess what? I have nominated myself for admin on ro:. Vlad is currently the only admin and he hardly has any time for it. There are so few visitors to that version that Vlad and maybe Rmx are the only ones likely to vote. Can I count on your support? No admin nomination page has been created there, so I used the Travellers' pub. (WT-en) Texugo 12:50, 10 April 2007 (EDT)

OpenID extension[edit]

Hi Evan, I'm working on AboutUs.org, which is now using your OpenID extension. I've had users request the ability to merge their openID account with their pre-existing wiki account. I thought I'd check in with you before I begin working on this to see if you or anybody you've heard about has done any work in this direction.

Thanks, (WT-en) Jacobpappe 13:45, 10 April 2007 (EDT)

It's built-in; see Special:OpenIDConvert. --(WT-en) Evan 13:53, 10 April 2007 (EDT)
Thanks, Evan. That's nice that it's built in. I was imagining an additional option when someone first signs in with their OpenID so instead of creating a new account, they can instead enter a pre-existing username and password. If I end up implementing this, I'll submit a patch. (WT-en) Jacobpappe 19:29, 10 April 2007 (EDT)
Yeah, that's another way of doing it. You may want to look at Ma.gnolia, which has that form of implementation. I think it's a pretty good idea. --(WT-en) Evan 20:57, 10 April 2007 (EDT)

Vietnam Bia Hoi comments[edit]

Hi Evan,

I just got back form a 3 week trip to Vietnam with my Vietnamese-American fiance and just had a correction to make on the Beer section of the Vietnam page. As it was rather pervasive I thought I would let you know and change it as appropriate. Bia Hoi is actually bottled beer while Bia Tuoi (literally "fresh beer") is draft beer. Bia Hoi is available pretty much everywhere, while Bia Tuoi is harder to find but getting more popular. Most of the places that we found for Bia Tuoi served Tiger or Heineken and were larger bars; one tiny street corner place claimed to serve 333 but we were not convinced (that actually seemed closer to your definition of Bia Hoi, it was draft beer that was put into jugs for us to then pour out into our glasses, but we did see them fill the jugs from a tapped keg).

Cheers,

-chris

Bot[edit]

Is it possible for me to program a bot to auto-generate outlines for countries on ? (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel ) • 10:07, 18 April 2007 (EDT)

Yes, of course! When I need to create new articles, I use WWW::Mediawiki::Client, since it's really easy to use. Please take a look at the Script policy, though. --(WT-en) Evan 08:38, 19 April 2007 (EDT)
Where can I get the instructions on how to use. I can just about manage VB and some C++ :(
It'll be much easier for me to just do it. How about this: you make a list on hi: of articles you want created and what template you want them created with, and I'll add them. --(WT-en) Evan 10:09, 20 April 2007 (EDT)
Right, I'll give you the list in 2-3 days. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel ) • 06:51, 22 April 2007 (EDT)

That sounds like a cool idea... is it possible though to focus on the Hi tech requests before putting energy into this though? – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 17:05, 20 April 2007 (EDT)

Renameuser[edit]

Feedback for wikivoyage?[edit]

Could wikivoyage not have a feedback console for each article, giving people the ability to leave feedback for each article, giving plus points or points of improvement? which could then be followed upon, or praise for the article, i often read articles and feel guilty that the person who spent time and effort creating the article is not getting thanks for his or her for thier gratious work.

oh, and thankyou for co-creating wikivoyage, it is one of the best ideas ive seen on the web;

thanks

Jack

The "feedback console" is the Talk page. The idea, though, is that you hit the Edit button and fix up whatever's wrong! (WT-en) Jpatokal 09:25, 21 April 2007 (EDT)

Audio Guides / Walking Tours[edit]

Hi Evan - I emailed you and Maj a few days ago to touch base on my idea about adding free, collaborative audio walking tours to Wikivoyage. Based on your profile, I get the impression that your Talk Page is a better way of getting in touch. Can we meet tomorrow or next week? (Sunday works for me too) Maybe we can have lunch? I'm in 514. mikecitrome@yahoo.com - MC May 3 1:14 PM

Mike, I just sent you an email. Thanks. (WT-en) Maj 13:32, 3 May 2007 (EDT)

hi:wikivoyage[edit]

Hi, could you please change the {{SITENAME}} on hi to विकिट्रैवल (the Hindi for WT) — (WT-en) Upamanyu, talk

P.S. I hope you had a great holiday at Puerto Rico.

Naming regions[edit]

Hi. Did you mean why did I use the names Dobruja and Bukovina instead of Dobrogea and Bucovina on the Romania page? It's because I noticed those versions were more frequent in English language sources. (WT-en) Axi 14:53, 8 May 2007 (EDT)

Could you change it (the TOC) back to the old one for . And please remember to change the {{SITENAME}} to विकिट्रैवल
Why change it back? I'm not excited about making an exception for one Wikivoyage language version; it means a lot of maintenance hassles for me in the future. Could you please comment on the Shared page? --(WT-en) Evan 07:57, 11 May 2007 (EDT)
I'll reply in the shared TP. But what about changeing the {{SITENAME}} to विकिट्रैवल ASAP? (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage( Talk )( (WT-en) Travel ) • 08:55, 11 May 2007 (EDT)
Done! Let me know if that works well. Note that you'll manually have to change links to all the "Wikivoyage:..." pages, but they should probably have the right content already. --(WT-en) Evan 09:07, 11 May 2007 (EDT)
There's a slight problem. I had already started writing the WT articles with विकिट्रैवल:... and now all the links have disappeared.

TOC[edit]

Hey there brotha... just a reminder to fix the last few issues before this plummets to bottom of your todo list ;) summing up what seem to be the issues on the tech page:

  • getting the + sign to twist down (not sure if it's working in other browsers, but it's definitely not in Safari).
  • move the "contents" heading inside the box, or better yet, remove it altogether
  • getting the "bullets out of the margin", as Todd put it... but if you fix #1 above then I think this would become irrelavent
  • supress the TOC when viewing diffs (as it used to do), to avoid having to scroll right.

Can you delete an account I created and do not want anymore?[edit]

Hi Evan!

I just signed up for an account today. However, after I signed up for an account, I realized that I wanted to use a different user name. Can you delete the account under the user name MandarinManMark, or is it ok just to have that inactive account laying around? I'll continue to use this account. Sorry to bug you, I was referred to you by someone :)

Thanks!

I love Wikivoyage and am very excited to start contributing it. Thanks for starting something so wonderful!

webby[edit]

So the Webby has made its way off of our news now, but I think you should find a way to get it on the main page still.... maybe you can just put the winner logo somewhere in the left nav bar, maybe in the blank space above the CC logo? – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 15:06, 26 May 2007 (EDT)

Hindi WT fixes[edit]

Hey there, saw your note for Upamanyu, he's on an extended vacation at the moment... but as for all of the things that I recall that were problems, they all seem to be fixed, except for the "Other sites" box in the nav bar... it may just need to be translated, so that will have to wait for him to return since I don't want to take a stab at it and not have it be correct, though I'm not sure he knows where to look to fix that, so you may want to point him in the right direction.

Otherwise, neverending blinky dot problem has ceased, I can now edit and save my preferences, and searching for pages brings about the correct results and gives a link to create a page if it doesn't already exist. So I think you got them right! Thanks Evan! – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 16:22, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

IsIn[edit]

Oh yeah, here was another one wts:WtTech:IsIn on Hindi version. I tried to figure it out myself, but not my forte. Why won't it work if I just copy the code verbatim from IsPartOf? – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 18:05, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

TOC issue[edit]

Hi Evan - this probably belongs as a bug report on shared, but since I'm not sure what the deal is I figured I'd put it on your talk page and let you decide how you want to handle it. Since the new TOC went live I've occasionally noticed a TOC showing up on the wrong page. Clearing the cache generally fixes the problem. As an example, at the moment, the TOC on Catalina Island appears to be showing a portion of the TOC for Budapest. I'm not sure what magic mojo is used to generate the TOC, but this one is weird enough that I expect the mojo went left instead of right somewhere. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 19:34, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

I also see it on the Recentchanges page occassionally, most often I notice it on de:. -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 19:44, 28 May 2007 (EDT)
Weird! That shouldn't ever happen. Hrmmmmm... I'll see if I can add some fancier mojo to make it work correctly. --(WT-en) Evan 19:49, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

Admin on Shared[edit]

Shouldn't I be an admin on Shared, as well as English? It looks like the VFD page there could use some extra help. (WT-shared) Here's me on shared. Thanks! -- (WT-en) Fastestdogever 23:37, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

I meant to ask you about this too-- I read somewhere on the Shared site that admins from any language version are automatically admins on Shared as well, but as yet I have no superpowers there. (WT-en) Texugo 05:23, 29 May 2007 (EDT)
"Automatically" as in "without any admin process"; it still takes a bureaucrat to flip the switch. I've done it for both of you. --(WT-en) Evan 07:18, 29 May 2007 (EDT)
Err, me 3? – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 15:22, 29 May 2007 (EDT)
