Straße

[edit]

Hi, Johayek. Why do you think it's a good idea to replace Straße with "Str."? What do the signs on the streets in Leipzig show? Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:29, 10 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Ikan Kekek. It is a good idea because most people's keyboards do not show the letter "ß". Does yours? In case you replace it with "B", this will lead to confusion. Google Maps etc will always also support the abbreviated street names including "straße". Some signs in street show the full name, some show the abbreviated one.--Johayek (talk) 08:50, 10 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

What keyboards show is of no importance; what matters to the visitor is what they will see on signs. And it's precisely because my keyboard doesn't have many characters that right above your edit screen, you can see tabs for Latin, Latin extended, IPA and Symbols. Does your smartphone keyboard show "ß"? Do you think, that most travellers' smartphone keyboards show "ß"? Why don't you agree that fuzzy characters irritate people and should be avoided, if easily possible? Do you agree, that a shorter string ending in a "." will almost always be properly and reliably identified as an abbreviation. Do you agree, that people have slight problems pronouncing a fuzzy character like "ß"? I don't have the faintest idea why you are starting a war for an irritating character that is most probably not an important part of your day to day life. --Johayek (talk) 09:12, 10 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Are you new to Wiki? On Wikis, we have discussions, which is what this is, not a war. Site policy, developed through previous discussions, is to use the spellings people actually see unless there are English names (e.g., Rome instead of Roma). See Wikivoyage:Spelling#Foreign words, which directly addresses "Straße" vs. "Strasse". If you'd like to argue for a change in Wikivoyage practice, make your case at Wikivoyage talk:Spelling. Thanks. No, I am absolutely not a Wiki newcomer. But I am a local and German native speaker (with quite some own "foreign language" / "territory" experience), willing to welcome travellers and making their life with the foreign German language as easy as possible, which is probably where you and I should be able to agree.
But let me put it like this: the traffic you are causing here just takes a little more attention away from the work that pays my rent etc, than I am usually able to be involved. So I am tempted to give in to almost everything, if you insist on prolonging this communication.
It is quite sad to see, that you are not willing to answer the serious questions, I asked, which are intended to shed some light on the "fuzzy character problem zone".
I am off for the time being. --Johayek (talk) 10:54, 10 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

I answered your question, at least implicitly: No, my keyboard doesn't have an ß on it. But I explained the workaround and directed you to existing Wikivoyage guidelines, that were developed through discussion into a consensus. And since you're familiar with Wikis, you know what that means.
Your work here as a volunteer, which all of us except the paid touters are, is greatly appreciated, and this question of what character to use is a pretty small detail, but I don't think that means it wasn't worth my mentioning to you. So are you satisfied that no shooting is going on now? Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:03, 10 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
