Vonyarcvashegy is a resort village in the West Balaton region.

The settlement was created when the former Vonyarc and Vashegy settlements were united in 1850. At that time, the inhabitants dealt primarily with viticulture and fishing. The later cultivated local bathing life was based upon the activity of a bathing association founded in 1930.

Get in[edit]

By train[edit]

Trains are available in every two hours from Kaposvár to Győr via Fonyód (junction point to Siófok), Balatonszentgyörgy (junction point to Nagykanizsa), Keszthely, Tapolca, Jánosháza (junction point to Veszprém and Zalaegerszeg), Celldömölk (junction point to Szombathely) and Pápa. The journey from Keszthely takes 7–8 minutes and costs 250 Ft. From Budapest, you have to transfer in Balatonszentgyörgy. The whole journey from Budapest takes less than 3 hours and costs 3410 Ft.

At the summer, direct trains are available from Pécs and Szombathely.

By bus[edit]

Buses are available from Budapest-Népliget five times a day. The journey takes 3.5 hours and costs 3705 Ft. More frequent buses are available from Keszthely. The journey takes 10–20 minutes and costs 250 Ft.

By boat[edit]

Boats are available between Apr 28–Sep 30 from Balatongyörök to Balatonmáriafürdő, Keszthely, Szigliget and Badacsony.

There is no local public transport or taxi service. You can use the regional buses operated by Volánbusz.

By bike[edit]

Balaton Bicycle Road is a good way explore the beaches and other attractions in the area.

There is a bike rental network. Bikes can be pick up and hand down in any Tourinform offices in this region (Keszthely, Gyenesdiás, Vonyarcvashegy, Balatongyörök and Héviz). Bike rental: 1500 Ft for two hours, 2200 Ft for one day.

  • 2 Chapel of Vonyarc (Vonyarci kápolna), Fő utca. Built in 1836 in Classicist style.
  • 3 Festetics Helikon Taverna Exhibition Hall of Wine-making and Gastronomy (Festetics Cellar and Press House, Festetics Helikon Taverna Borászati és Gasztronómiai Kiállítótér, Festetics-pince és présház), Helikon utca 22, +36 83 348-004, . By appointment only. Built around 1820. Adult: 2000 Ft, children: 1000 Ft.
  • 4 Light Cross (Fénykereszt). There is a nice view to the village. The Cross protects the village symbolically.
  • 5 Pál Kitaibel Observation Tower (Kitaibel Pál-kilátó). Observation tower.
  • 6 Saint Michael Chapel (Szent Mihály-kápolna), Szentmihálydomb. Built in 1870.

In Balatongyörök:

  • 7 Batsányi Observation Tower (Batsányi-kilátó), Balatongyörök. Observation tower on the top of Pap Hill.
  • 8 Mátyás Bél Observation Tower (Bél Mátyás-kilátó), Balatongyörök. Observation tower on the top of Garga Hill.
  • 9 Saint Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church (Szent Mihály arkangyal római katolikus templom), Kossuth Lajos utca 3, Balatongyörök. Built between 1831 and 1833 in late–Baroque style.
  • 10 Szépkilátó, Balatongyörök. Observation point to the Lake Balaton, provides a very beautiful panorama. There is a roman spring nearby. Free to visit..
