Wikivoyage:Sister project links
Wikimedia sister projects are the publicly available wikis operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, of which Wikivoyage is one. This guideline is about linking from Wikivoyage to the other sister projects.
This is a draft policy, and not yet in effect. Please see the discussion page for more information. |
Through Wikidata
[edit]Links to sister projects are mainly handled by Wikidata, through two mechanisms:
- When a page is linked from Wikidata as the page for some Wikidata item (such as a city), links to the other projects' pages on that subject appear in the left margin. In the to-be-default skin of vector-2022, they appear in the "tools" and "language(s)" menus in the top-right.
- When the Wikidata item code is told in a listing's wikidata parameter, icons with links to Wikidata and Wikipedia appear at the end of the listing, the latter if a Wikipedia article in English is linked from the item.
Wikidata policy is to link only one page on each project (Wikimedia Commons may have links both for a page and the associated category). Sometimes a Wikivoyage page on a city in fact covers the municipality or the other way round. You may want to use the item corresponding to the actual coverage.
Sometimes the Wikidata item corresponding to a Wikivoyage page either doesn't have an article in Wikipedia in English, or the article has little relevant content. In that case you can use the "wikipedia" parameter to link to an article on the subject that actually is useful (such as linking to the city article when Wikivoyage covers the municipality or the other way round).
Explicit links
[edit]Explicit links to sister projects can be written with a prefix, such as w:Paris, c:Paris or d:Paris for the page on Paris on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons or Wikidata, respectively. To specify the language, add the language code (usually conforming to ISO 639-1), such as w:fr:Paris for the Wikipedia article in French on Paris. Given in this format, the links are treated differently from external links.
However, such links are not used on destinations pages and only rarely in other mainspace articles. Wikivoyage mostly links only official sites there. Such links are more common on talk pages, in guidelines (often as See also items) and on help pages.
Another way to refer to a Wikipedia article is through {{RelatedWikipedia}} and , added at the end of a page (near the geo and PartOf templates). This can be added when a page other than those shown through Wikidata is relevant. The link will appear in the side bar (in the traditional Vector skin).
More rarely linked projects include Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikispecies, Wikiversity and Wiktionary. Links will show together with Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons links if linked from the Wikidata item, but may be added explicitly as described above.
How to link
[edit]To an article with the same name or similar subject
[edit]If there's a page on Wikipedia that covers exactly the same (or very close) subject as a page on Wikivoyage you can link to it.
Wikidata is the usual mechanism to link articles on the same topic across multiple languages of Wikipedia, Wikivoyage or other Wikimedia projects. Each article may be associated with only one Wikidata item. Easiest method is to click on the Wikidata item link in the sidebar of the Wikipedia article and add the Wikivoyage article name in the Wikivoyage section using en and the language code.
To an article with related subject
[edit]If there is no direct equivalent article Wikipedia but it would be useful to reference one or more Wikipedia pages then the {{RelatedWikipedia}} template can be used.
As an alternative, on Wikivoyage, you can simply place:
{{RelatedWikipedia|article name|rel=y}}
near the end of the article, where article name is the name of the Wikipedia article you are linking to.
From templates within an article
[edit]A few MediaWiki templates retrieve data from Wikidata or create links to maps and sibling projects in an article:
- {{listing}} and {{marker}} accept (lat, long) co-ordinates and link to a dynamic map; {{mapframe}} places that map into a destination article
- {{listing}} supports links to a venue's official site, to a Wikidata entry and to an encyclopaedia article
- {{quickbar}} and {{pagebanner}} retrieve data from Wikidata; the listing editor is able to lookup (lat, long) given a Wikidata link.
- {{interwikimedia link}} creates a hatnote in the form "See also: (Display title) at (Interwikimedia link code)"
See the individual template documentation for details.
To images
[edit]To an image category on Commons
[edit]Use a sidebar link for an image category relating to the article in general, or a hatnote link for a category relating to a section. A link to a Commons category will typically look like:
[[Commons:Category:Anytown]]
