Removal of URL from Blacklist[edit]

Hello, why is my apartment url on the blacklist here. I dont understand. Please help me about this. Vienna Cityapartment at is my site. Im the Owner of the 4 Apartments in Vienna. Guido

Goodevening, I am writing in to ask for the url mentioned below to be removed from your blacklist, I hope this is the correct section to ask. It was added to several florida accommodation sections where the website offers villa and accommodation rentals direct from the owner. It is not an agency and so it was felt that it complied with the wikipedia regulations based on its similarity to other websites that were listed. If this is not the case then please receive our apologies and the site will not be added again. Thank you for your assistance.

Quoting Blacklist: "This URL has shown up in articles for at least a half dozen Florida cities (see Special:Contributions/90.197.99.232) and been reverted repeatedly over the past few days. As far as I can tell it doesn't meet the criteria set out in Wikivoyage:Accommodation listings#Apartment listings, and the user is not responding to a message on his talk page. If the user ever responds and a resolution is reached then it should be safe to remove this from the blacklist. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:08, 22 May 2007 (EDT) "

I've removed it for now, but please read Project:Accommodation listings#Apartment listings before re-adding this link to any articles. Apartment and other rental services must have a physical address - Wikivoyage has been spammed over the years with hundreds (if not thousands) of rental agencies looking to make commissions, so the criteria laid out in the linked article are our attempt to draw a line that includes only those services that are of direct use to the majority of travelers. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 14:25, 10 August 2007 (EDT)

Blacklist nominations[edit]

  • sigmahotels.com - Booking aggregator. Has been trying to replace primary hotel links (especially in Dubai with its own. I see no way they will be primary. (WT-en) OldPine 15:30, 23 February 2008 (EST)

Catch-all pattern[edit]

I added the following pattern on jamwiki.org a while back, and it seems to catch a significant amount of spam that hits that site. The pattern will block any list of ten or more URLs of the form "http://example.com http://example2.com..." that is added - as far as I can see there shouldn't be any legitimate edits that use that pattern, but spammers do it all the time. I'd like to add it here, but if it is found to block any legitimate edits please revert.

(http[s]?\://[^ \n\t\.]+\.[^ \n\t]+[ \n\t]+){10,}

-- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 12:09, 1 March 2008 (EST)

I tweaked the pattern slightly to also ten of more URLs of the form "[1] [2]...". It doesn't catch links of the form "text text...", which is probably the next iteration that will be needed... -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 13:38, 16 March 2008 (EDT)

I wrote a new one ((\[https?://(\S*\.)+\S+\ .*\]\s*)|(https?://(\S*\.)+\S+\s+)){6,} to catch [http://example.com text] http://www.example.com.na [http://example.com] in any combination. Works perfectly in kregexpeditor, but for some reason it does not work on the blacklist if I look for 10 repetitions. Seems to work fine for 6 though.

--(WT-en) Nick 09:50, 17 March 2008 (EDT)

Great. Now I need to remove all the temporary links I have at User:(WT-en) DenisYurkin just in order to save anything new to my user page.

Can we exclude wikivoyage.org from these banned links? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 17:04, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

Hopefully that would be possible using the Project:Local spam whitelist? I confess I'm not sure how best to handle this, but you're right, it would definitely be ideal to not block wikivoyage.org domain links using the (otherwise useful) catch all pattern. I'll give this a shot. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 17:46, 21 March 2008 (EDT)
I think that worked! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 17:50, 21 March 2008 (EDT)
Thanks, Peter--it works again now :-) --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 18:03, 21 March 2008 (EDT)
I decreased the limit to five links in a row to combat spambots that have been hitting the site this morning - if there is any collateral damage please post the page in question so that we can try to find a workaround. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:40, 8 January 2009 (EST)

Regex search[edit]

Is there any way to do a search of wikivoyage pages using regular expressions—to see what a pattern might catch? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 10:46, 11 March 2008 (EDT)

Try this [3], scroll to the bottom for Regular expression, add your regular expression followed by site:wikivoyage.org, eg. /(a|A)(f|R)(r|R)(i|I)(c|C)(a|A)/ site:wikivoyage.org will search for africa --(WT-en) Nick 13:31, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
I'm not sure that Exalead has worked out all the kinks of that regex search—I'm getting false positives on recent searches, and I tested that using the blacklist. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:07, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

switzerland-travel-guide dot info[edit]

I've reverted this non-official guide link from Switzerland four times now, the first time leaving a pointer to the Project:External links policy. Hopefully adding it to the blacklist will get the attention of the anon who keeps adding it, and provided there is some indication that it is understood that links to other travel guides are discouraged then this can be removed from the blacklist. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 17:08, 30 March 2008 (EDT)

thepeakadventure\.com[edit]

There guys have been spamming Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Pai for ages now, so I'm blocking them until they learn to behave. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:53, 26 April 2008 (EDT)

Dear Wikivoyage, First of all I'm really really want to apologize on our behave that have too many the peak adventure on your website in the section of Chiangmai, Pai and Maehongson. by without knowledge and proper use and by the mistake on many point. which may be because we do many activities program tour in Chiangmai Pai and Maehongson so our computer and marketing man just put them all by not even read the article for proper use the peak adventure word in the suitable location only. So would you please give us a chance to put our "thepeakadventure" back in again so i myself as a manager will emphasize on this article very carefully and would not let it happen again.

  Regards, Mr. Pichai Saetia. Manager.

Phone #?[edit]

Is it possible to add phone#'s to this list? If so, we should add +91 33 64603695. It's for a travel agency that relentlessly adds it to several hotel listings across some Indian pages – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 11:22, 6 May 2008 (EDT)

Yes, it's possible. The only problem is that it can be tough to account for all the ways they can mangle that number and still have it legible -- see [4] for what we had to do last time. (WT-en) Jpatokal 12:30, 6 May 2008 (EDT)

apartmentsholiday dot com[edit]

This one has been repeatedly re-added to articles despite pointers in the revert edit summary and messages on talk pages to the Project:Accommodation listings#Apartment listings guideline. See Special:Contributions/(WT-en) Elliottfox, Special:Contributions/189.25.14.129 and others. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:24, 27 May 2008 (EDT)

farmersdaughterhotel[edit]

Added farmersdaughterhotel since they just can't seem to stop spamming LA and California. Most of their links are SEOed for LA. The last one they tried to replace the official California link with their link. Since they can't stop, here's some help for them. -- (WT-en) Colin 03:44, 14 July 2008 (EDT)

yeah, i don't get this one... they're actually a good and popular place, not sure why they're resorting to these tactics – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 19:10, 27 July 2008 (EDT)

z dash index[edit]

Just as we block "display colon none" to prevent CSS-based spam, we've been hit with a few today that use "z dash index". As far as I'm aware none of our templates or any other valid edits would need this CSS parameter, so I've added it to the list, but please revert if it is found to block any legitimate edits. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:25, 31 July 2008 (EDT)

fisheyestv dot com[edit]

An anonymous IP has three times created an advertising article for this web site, all of which were then deleted. To the anonymous user - please read Project:What is an article and Project:External links. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:23, 27 August 2008 (EDT)

jetabroad dot com[edit]

This one has been repeatedly added to a number of pages over the past several days, with the links hidden in an out-of-place "About" section. I'm not sure about the contributor's motivation, so hopefully adding this link to the blacklist will get his or her attention. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:40, 4 September 2008 (EDT)

Subdomains and Russian Wikivoyage[edit]

For some reason, when I list subdomains on the Russian blacklist, it is blocking the main domain as well. For example:

"best\-windows2005\.narad\.ru" blocks all instances of "narad.ru" (narod changed to narad to avoid blacklist problems).

Any ideas why this is happening? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 09:07, 23 September 2008 (EDT)

Never mind, figured out—it's on the Main List of blocked content, so I just whitelisted it. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:32, 25 September 2008 (EDT)

Removal of URL from Blacklist | Jetabroad.com[edit]

Move from User talk:(WT-en) Wrh2:

Hi Ryan, I am writing this to you regarding the black listing of Jetabroad.com, and hope this is the right section.

Recently I set a team up to optimize our standing with the search engines. I was appalled to find that not only had they resorted to stupid techniques, they had ruined the quality of the information provided on Wiki Travel, by placing citations in random places throughout the destination sections. I was even more horrified that their stupidity had led us to be black listed on a reputable site, and seeing as they reported to me, it’s now my job in jeopardy. I appreciate the fact that you have removed the evidence of their brainless mistakes and ask if you could please take Jetabroad.com off the black list. I assure you that dim witted link insertion like this will not be prevalent again on my watch and I urge you to forgive me for my lack of supervision over the idiots that thought they would be quick rather than smart.

Regards, James

Link removed. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:31, 25 September 2008 (EDT)

Porn tables[edit]

Can we blacklist strings of html code? Like this? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 12:38, 27 September 2008 (EDT)

Can't see why not, simply blacklisting BGCOLOR should work. I'll test. --(WT-en) Nick 13:16, 27 September 2008 (EDT)
I have added ([Bb][Gg][Cc][Oo][Lo][Oo][Rr].*){5,} to the spamfilter. It should block all pages that contains the word bgcolor more than 5 times --13:30, 27 September 2008 (EDT)
Great! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 13:52, 27 September 2008 (EDT)

Accor/Ibis Hotels Blacklist[edit]

Do we really want to blacklist this hotel group? It understand a single user has been added entries for multiple hotels, but we allow people to do it for other major hotel chains. At the moment I can't edit any entries with accor hotels, which is a considerale number --(WT-en) Inas 23:35, 28 September 2008 (EDT)

Agreed, it's one of the world's largest hotel chains, and should not have been added without discussion. I've un-blacklisted it. (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:11, 29 September 2008 (EDT)

Addition 2008-10-21[edit]

Hi. Have added ilovemud(dot)com and sport4essex(dot)com to the Blacklist as they are being repeatedly used by spammers who are only appearing by IP address. (Hence have not tried to "educate" users as suggested on the page.) (WT-en) Nrms 08:05, 21 October 2008 (EDT)

ya dot ru[edit]

I wonder why ya dot ru is blacklisted: I'm trying to mention these two in a talk page:

  • wow. ya .ru (all without spaces)
  • http://anatolix. ya .ru/replies.xml?item_no=2072&parent_id=2101&with_parent=1#reply-Anatolix-2101 (again, without spaces)

and it is said as blacklisted. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 04:16, 25 October 2008 (EDT)

BUMP. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 11:28, 11 November 2008 (EST)
For something as general as "ya dot ru" I'm not sure the spam blacklist is the best way to go, as it will cause false positives against a wide variety of URLs, such as "mya dot ru". Since there was no comment explaining the listing on this page (per recommended policy) I don't see any harm in removing it - we can always revisit later if necessary. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:44, 11 November 2008 (EST)
So who and how can fix it? Right now I can't find in this article any regex looking like the URL I need to unblacklist. Or should I add it to whitelist? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 12:53, 11 November 2008 (EST)
I think that there is a default Mediawiki blacklist in addition to the Wikivoyage blacklist, and I'm guessing that's what killed it. I put ya.ru on the whitelist, so you should be good now. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 13:40, 11 November 2008 (EST)
Thanks, it works now! --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 05:20, 14 November 2008 (EST)

navigatorind dot com[edit]

I made a good-faith effort to alert an apparent travel site promoter that this link violated Project:External links by leaving pointers to the policy in edit summaries and on the user's talk page, but when my reverts were immediately restored I added the site to the blacklist as a way of preventing these links from being added to (seemingly) dozens of India articles. I don't think the user was intentionally violating site policies, but without some confirmation from the user that he/she has read and understands the external links policy I think that this link should remain on the blacklist. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 13:12, 1 November 2008 (EDT)

airporttaxicabservices dot com[edit]

This company has been extraordinarily aggressive in adding its listing to every article in the Bay Area (California) to the point where the Project:Don't tout guideline is definitely being abused. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 14:07, 5 November 2008 (EST)

I apologise for that, I was some customer saying, that we should list our site to wiki since a lot of people print information about particular destination, we service all over the bay area, and work with 50 local cab companies, we were just add our taxi info in a taxi section. Rest i believe we were not spamming any other category. Please consider exclusion of our site from blacklist and add our site under taxi section in major cities like SF, SJ, SFO etc. Thanks,

azul-barcelona dot com[edit]

This apartment listing site has been repeatedly added to Barcelona despite numerous comments indicating that it is not in line with Project:Accommodation listings#Apartment listings. In addition, whether by accident or by intent the editor has been removing competing listings or moving them so this listing is first in the list, clearly violating the Project:Don't tout policies. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 20:44, 8 November 2008 (EST)

hiflyingcharters dot com / flyingairambulance dot com / flyhelicopterindia dot com / hospitalfamily dot com[edit]

This site has appeared in dozens of articles today, everything from small towns to India and South Asia. I left a pointer to the Project:Don't tout guidelines for the anonymous user who has been adding these links, but so far no effect. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:21, 10 November 2008 (EST)

Note that after blacklisting the user varied the text used to get around the spam filter and has been adding additional sites. Since this appears to be a willful violation of site policies I would highly recommend NOT allowing removal of this site without very good cause. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 10:32, 12 November 2008 (EST)
An annomous user deleted this entry as his/her only contribution, so I put it back here - not sure if the spammer thought removing anything from the talk page, would lift the block, or what exactly the deal is. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 15:26, 15 November 2008 (EST)

How do you remove the above url from the spam list. The above services are the leading air ambulance and aircharter services present in this part of the world. With an external link, this would be a useful information for all travellers. Why do you feel this is spam. The smaller cities information for air ambulance would be useful to the traveller visiting and meeting with an emergency medical condition or the exceptional traveller wishing to visit a small town where commercial flights do not operate.

I wonder how your individual site pages are helpful to traveller.

Thanks.

External links policy - Don't tout - information for business owners - and, oh, if you only know how much work it takes to keep this site useful for the traveller... --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 23:12, 15 November 2008 (EST)

After having been clearly pointed to the relevant guidelines this user returned again tonight. At this point I would recommend that under no circumstances should this site be removed from the spam list - they are clearly abusing Wikivoyage for the purpose of advertising a business. Without knowing anything about this company other than how they have interacted here I would be extremely hesitant to recommend them to any traveler needing to hire an air ambulance. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:56, 17 November 2008 (EST)

This user is continuing to add links to guides without any indication that he/she has read or respects Wikivoyage's policies on external links and touting. "Vibha Lifesavers" and "Hi Flying Group" are apparently two more terms to be watchful for. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 02:13, 23 November 2008 (EST)

a-prague dot com[edit]

Clearly not in line with Project:External links, but despite pointers the user (here and here amongst others) has continued to add and re-add it to articles throughout Europe. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 10:17, 12 November 2008 (EST)

Removal of URL from Blacklist[edit]

Hello Ryan I am writing in to ask for the url mentioned below round the world flights dot com and rtwflights dot com to be removed from your blacklist, I hope this is the correct section to ask. Also to apologise - didnt realise you werent allowed to link to specific page tables. Had being doing it for ages mainly because I had written and updated a lot of the content - most of that was without links. Also didnt realise there was the talk section till someone showed it to me yesterday. Yeah as you say wasnt malicious but breaks the rules. Realise its a big no no now. Can I just put 1 link in Specialist Agencies section then?Kind Regards Stuart

roundtheworldflights dot com and rtwflights and com[edit]

This site has been repeatedly added many, many times to Round the world flights, often replacing the airline's own sites (such as http://thegreatescapade/). I'm not convinced that this is malicious, but attempts to point the anonymous user in question to Project:Don't tout and Project:External links have failed, so until there is some acknowledgment that the user has read those policies and understands why turning the Round the world flights page into a personal advertising brochure is inappropriate I think this one should stay blacklisted. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 10:53, 21 November 2008 (EST)

After being added to the spam list the user re-appeared using rtwflights dot com, a redirect to the blacklisted site. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 10:32, 22 November 2008 (EST)

traverseamerica dot com[edit]

This one keeps getting re-added to Central America and South America. The anonymous user in question has been reverting the removal of these links, so I'm adding it to the spam list in the hopes that this will be a way to get him/her to read Project:External links to understand why this particular link is not appropriate. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:45, 24 November 2008 (EST)

Hello Ryan, I must say that I was unaware of some of the external links policy and as traverseamerica dot com is a travel guide it is not appropiate to be linked. I thank you for pointing this for me to be able to undestand this policy and I plead for you to remove this site from this list as it is now understood the mistake of the action and the policies on external links. Thank you. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 201.213.43.73 (talkcontribs)
Link removed, although if it re-appears then the site in question would be subject to a permanent blacklist. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 10:47, 3 February 2010 (EST)

trekexchange dot com[edit]

I'm having no luck getting this user to notice the notes I've left on his/her talk page and in revert summaries, so hopefully the spam list will work. Linking to audio tours is frowned upon according to Project:External links, so while it might be a great site, Trek Exchange is not appropriate for listing on Wikivoyage. I don't think this site needs to stay blacklisted, but until we've made the user in question aware of our policies the blacklist seems like the best way of preventing him/her from wasting his/her time adding more links. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:26, 1 December 2008 (EST)

I've also added locationbasedcontent dot com as the same user is now adding audio tour links for that site. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:55, 1 December 2008 (EST)
The user in question contacted me via Wikivoyage email and has indicated that he/she understands that links to audio tours are frowned upon, so I'm removing these links from the blacklist. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:39, 2 December 2008 (EST)

So this is the second problem I've had with Joe... I can't add trader joes website, and now can't add Hale'iwa Joe's website... spam filter is blocking... i tried adding to the whitelist... and other thoughts? – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 17:04, 14 December 2008 (EST)

Just remove it. I think we should actually have a process in place to clean up the blacklist every now and then, because many of the hit-and-run spammers never come back, and having too big a blacklist causes collateral damage. (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:57, 14 December 2008 (EST)
Agree with Jani. If no one objects I think we should take a stab at trimming the list significantly, and anything that turns up from a spambot can always be blacklisted again later. I'd recommend leaving anything that's on this talk page, and the obvious ones (like the porn and drug patterns) but trimming others. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:01, 14 December 2008 (EST)
I've trimmed those URLs that appear to be spambot-related that start with a number or the letter "a". If there is an uptick in spam please revert, otherwise it might be worthwhile doing a bit more housekeeping in the coming days. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 23:57, 14 December 2008 (EST)
I put "© 20\d\d" back - my guess is that's less anti-spam than anti-pasting-copyright-notices, which has some value in catching particularly blatant copyvio additions. -- (WT-en) Dguillaime 00:04, 15 December 2008 (EST)
Thanks, I didn't look at that one closely enough and misinterpreted the "d"s to be letters instead of regular expressions. Probably a good example of why these expressions should be explained on the talk page, thus giving a more permanent record of why they were added... -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:14, 15 December 2008 (EST)
I don't see anything on here that says "joe" though, and Safari doesn't return any results when I search the blacklist, which is why I'm confused – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 00:25, 15 December 2008 (EST)
Have a look at Project:Spam filter which gives some details on how the two blacklists work. The Project:Local spam whitelist allows URLs that are being blocked by the default Mediawiki spam blacklist. In this case, it appears that you have to add the exact pattern on the Mediawiki blacklist to the whitelist to allow it. I've added "joes\.com" to the whitelist, and traderjoes.com should now work as expected. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:31, 15 December 2008 (EST)
Old URLs trimmed through "h" now. As always, if a spambot returns that uses any of these patterns please re-add them to the blacklist. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 16:40, 20 December 2008 (EST)
I've completely trimmed the list at this point to remove old patterns that weren't listed on this talk page. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:52, 1 January 2009 (EST)

waytostay dot com[edit]

This site is apparently an apartment rental aggregator based in the UK. Their business does not appear to be in compliance with Project:Accommodation listings#Apartment listings (local rentals, local address, address listed on web site), but despite repeated attempts to point them to that policy they continue to spam articles ranging from Barcelona to Florence to Madrid (and others). The spam list seems like a last resort to avoid a proliferation of their ads on this site. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 15:31, 21 December 2008 (EST)
