Lifford is the county town in County Donegal. This means that it is the administrative centre for the County of Donegal, despite the fact that it is much smaller than Letterkenny. The County Council chambers are located here and it is linked to Strabane, in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland by a bridge over the River Finn. Thus, this river is the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and Lifford is separated from Strabane only by this stretch of water, giving the town a unique position within the Republic of Ireland.

Get in

[edit]

Lifford is the main gateway into County Donegal for travel from Dublin and north of Dublin. Consequently, it is served by the main bus routes that serve Letterkenny. Also, as the town is located just across the border/river from Strabane in Northern Ireland, it can be accessed by a short walk from Strabane bus station, which is served by buses to Derry.
