Älvkarleby is a town and municipality at the northern edge of Uppsala County, where Dalälven reaches the Baltic Sea, between Tierp and Gävle.

Dalälven is usually considered the natural border between Svealand and Norrland; at least its lower part, which largely divides Uppsala County from Gävleborg County.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is Sweden's largest airport, with rail transfer to Älvkarleby.

The local train Upptåget between Uppsala and Gävle stops hourly at Älvkarleby. The station is 2 kilometres from the town centre.
