Understand
Get in
From the south, Newport is most easily accessible using Interstate 91. Taking exits 27 or 28 will lead you into the town. From the north, take Autoroute 55 South from Quebec, and you will find Newport just a few miles after crossing the U.S./Canadian border.
Get around
See
- 1 Lake Memphremagog. Newport is on the shoreline of the large lake and has a wooden boardwalk that can be walked or biked that leads over the water. It is also rumored that the lake holds a lake monster, Memphre.
Do
- Newport Cycle Path. The former Massawippi Valley Railway line from Newport to Lennoxville was abandoned in 1990 and the track removed in 1992. Three segments are now cycle trails: the Newport Cycle Path from Newport to the Canadian border and (in Quebec) Beebe Plain to Ayers Cliff and North Hatley to Lennoxville.
Buy
- Pick and Shovel. An independent hardware store turned mega-mart. You can find almost anything in this great spot-a toilet, board game, banana split, or new pet fish.
Eat
- Big Joe's. A great hamburger and sandwich place located on Newport's main street. Excellent Philadelphia and New York style food.
- Lago, Main Street. A wonderful Italian restaurant. The food is truly artisan, you won't find any overcooked baked ziti here. The salads, pizzas, and seafood are worth highlighting.
Drink
There are a few bars on Main Street which are also just a short walk away from the waterfront boardwalks near Lake Memphremagog.
Sleep
- Newport City Inn & Suites, 444 East Main St., ☏ +1 802 334-6558, toll-free: +1-800-338-6558, fax: +1 802 334-6557. Indoor pool, hot tub, exercise facility. AAA 2 diamonds.
