Colonial India was a period in the history of South Asia, during which European powers ruled, or had significant influence in what is today India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. The United Kingdom was the main colonial power, though France and Portugal held some territory.

Understand

From 1757 to 1848, the British East India Company was the dominant force. From 1858 to 1947, most of South Asia became the British Raj, the "jewel in the crown" of the British Empire.
