Asia > Central Asia > Afghanistan > Northeast Afghanistan > Ai-Khanoum

Ai-Khanoum was an important city a few centuries BCE when Alexander the Great and his successors ruled Bactria. Today it is only ruins and is in Kunduz province, Afghanistan.

Ai-Khanoum is one of the more important archaeological sites for the Graeco-Bactrian civilization. The city is thought by some experts to have been founded by Alexander as Alexandria-on-the-Oxus; others argue that it was founded a few decades later by one of his successors. It was destroyed around 145 BCE.
