Understand

[edit]

Geothermal activity is a significant tourist attraction, particularly around Rotorua. The Taupo Volcanic Zone runs through the Bay of Plenty from the active volcanoes around Mount Ruapehu in the south-west to beyond White Island in the north-east. Here the Earth's crust is believed to be only 5 km thick in places. There are several other large, though dormant, volcanoes in this zone, including the volcanic calderas occupied by Lakes Taupo and Rotorua, as well as the more familiar volcanic cones.

Get in

[edit]

Fly to Rotorua Airport (ROT  IATA), Tauranga Airport (TRG IATA) or Whakatane Airport (WHK IATA).

This region travel guide to Bay of Plenty is an outline and may need more content. It has a template, but there is not enough information present. If there are Cities and Other destinations listed, they may not all be at usable status or there may not be a valid regional structure and a "Get in" section describing all of the typical ways to get here.
