Asia > Southeast Asia > Indonesia > Sumatra > Lampung > Metro (city)

Metro is a city in the southern Sumatran province of Lampung.

Understand

[edit]
After renovations in the 1980s, a fountain was built on the spot where the Meterm Tower once stood.

History

[edit]

The name Metro comes from the word Meterm in Dutch which means "centre" which means in the middle between Central Lampung and East Lampung, even in the centre of Lampung Province. It was strongly supported with its history and the establishment of a landmark in the form of a tower called the Meterm Tower in the Merdeka Park, Metro City Square.

People

[edit]

There is a second theory that Metro comes from the word Mitro (Javanese) which means friends, partners, associations, this was motivated by colonization coming from various regions outside Sumatra that entered Lampung. In 1936, the Dutch colonial government sent Javanese migrants to colonise the area, which served to relieve overpopulation on Java, and mitigate the influence of Indonesian independence activists. Therefore, once isolated indigenous Lampungese people are assimilated with Javanese people.

[edit]

In addition to Lampung language, the plural Metro community uses various other local languages such as Java, Minang, and Sunda language. But generally, they speak Indonesian language.
