Category talk:Extra regions with categories
Successful trial run
[edit]I created this category yesterday. It is populated by the {{extraregion}} template, as I explain on this category page. While the explanation of the process is slightly complex, it's pretty simple once you grasp it. Please read that explanation first.
Results so far: After creating the category, there were 12 pages in it. Looking through the categories corresponding to those, there were a total of around 140 pages listed, and investigating those cases led to:
- the correction of approximately 80 pages where the breadcrumb was wrong
- the discovery and correction of two cases where we had redundant region structures (for example, a South Bay article whose borders are defined as those of Santa Clara County, plus another redundant Santa Clara County article, now redirected)
- the correction of about 15 cases where articles had more than one {{IsPartOf}} template
- the deletion of about 8 empty categories which no longer corresponded to anything in the actual hierarchy
- the correction of 2 instances where the region should not have been classified as extrahierarchical in the first place, since it appears as a region on the map in the parent article
I'd say that's a pretty successful trial run. I believe this will remain useful because when people change a region to an extraregion, they do not necessarily think to check the corresponding category to see if the items listed should actually be there. Plus, others may simply not realize they are assigning a breadcrumb to the wrong place and may end up creating such categories. Now we have a way to catch those cases in the future. Any opinions?
