The Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY, was founded in 1874 and has provided adult education in a summer retreat setting since then. Over the years, it has been the model for similar institutes throughout the country. In addition to the original "Mother Chautauqua", three "Daughter Chautauquas" have remained in continuous operation since the 1800s:

- Lakeside Chautauqua — Marblehead, Northwest Ohio
