Loppi is a municipality in Tavastia Proper. In 2023, it was home to about 7,700 people. The Luutaharjun Samo hiking trail passes through the Komio nature reserve, which is in the area. There are more than 100 km of marked outdoor trails in Loppi.

Loppi is a rural municipality, around 70 km (43 mi) north of Helsinki. Today, it belongs to the Riihimäki sub-region. There are three big villages in the municipality: Loppi (parish village), Launonen and Läyliäinen.

Get in

The significant main road in the municipality is Highway 54 from Tammela at Highway 10 near Forssa via Loppi to Riihimäki at Highway 3 and further to Hollola by Lahti at Highway 4. The most direct connection to the centre of Loppi from Helsinki is to travel along Highway 3 (E12) towards Hämeenlinna and then switch over to road 132 by Klaukkala.

Saint Bridget Church
  • 1 Saint Bridget Church (Santa Pirjo), Pilpalantie 97, +358 19 426-4100. An old wooden church of Loppi, presumably built in the late 1660s, but the original foundations are possibly older.
  • 2 Loppi Church (Lopen kirkko), Pilpalantie 1. A current red-brick church of Loppi from 1888.
  • 3 Marskin Maja, Marskintie 216 (near the lake Punelia), +358 40-754-2886, . Former hunting lodge of Marshal Mannerheim. A museum and restaurant.

  • 1 Launonen Manor (Launosten kartano), Pehtoorintie 18, +358 40-558-4247. The 17th-century manor in the Launonen village. A riding stables are included in the manor area.
  • 2 Komio Nature Reserve (Komion luonnonsuojelualue), Luutasuo 123 (10 km south-west from the centre). Ridge and other glacial formations, woods and mires. Varying landscape with many species. Nature trails of 3, 5 and 6.5 km. In winter there are 20 km of skiing tracks (not illuminated, classic style). The nature trails connect to longer hiking routes outside the reserve.
  • 3 Räyskälä Airfield (Räyskälän ilmailukeskus), Räyskäläntie 311, +358 400-921-260.
  • 4 Loppi Theatre (Lopen teatteri), Maitokalliontie, +358 40-754-2886, . A local summer theatre on the shores of Lake Loppijärvi in the Sajaniemi village.
  • 5 Melkuttimet. Ridge-side pine forests and lakes. Easy 7-km hiking trail, suitable also for families. Shores for swimming (no official beaches).
  • 6 Vojakkalan Lava, Valppaanpolku 1, +358 40-762-4488. Dance pavilion. Social dancing most Saturday evenings in summer, in 2022 probably at least 11 June (season start), 24 June (Midsummer), 16 and 30 July and 13 August (season end).
  • 7 Sajaniemi Beach (Sajaniemen uimaranta), Sajatie 457. A beach on the shores of Lake Loppijärvi.
  • Iso-Melkutin (Räyskälä). This lake is a popular scuba diving destination.

Loppi is especially known for its potato cultivation, and the potato is classified as the municipality's title plant. Potato porridge and lingonberry broth cooked from barley flour, as well as a sweetened potato casserole and meat sauce, were named the traditional food of the Loppi parish in the 1980s.
