Sosnowiec is a city in the Silesian Voivodeship of southern Poland, in the historic Dąbrowa Basin, about 10 km east of Katowice. It has about 186,000 residents and forms part of the Metropolis GZM, the large urban area of Katowice and neighbouring cities.

Understand

[edit]

Sosnowiec grew mainly in the 19th and early 20th centuries as an industrial and mining centre on the edge of the Upper Silesian conurbation. Coal mining, textiles, railways and heavy industry shaped its urban fabric, but many mines and factories declined or closed late in the 20th century.

The city is sometimes described locally as a “city of four cultures”, reflecting the Polish, Jewish, German and Russian communities that influenced its development during the industrial boom. Today the main things to see are industrialists’ villas, churches, former factory districts, railway architecture, modernist public buildings, parks, mosaics and the historic centre around the main railway station.

The central area is around Sosnowiec Główny, 3 Maja, Modrzejowska, Warszawska, Zwycięstwa and Małachowskiego streets. Małachowskiego has become the main strip for cafés, bars, restaurants and small cultural venues.

  • Bus M19 runs between Sosnowiec and Pyrzowice Airport via Będzin and Psary.
  • Pyrzowice Lotnisko railway station is within walking distance of the terminal area; check current rail connections before travelling.

Sosnowiec Główny

50.27919.1261 Sosnowiec Główny is the main railway station, in the city centre. It handles regional, long-distance and some international services. Check departures for the exact station, as rail works and timetable corrections may change platforms and routes.

Frequent regional trains link Sosnowiec Główny with Katowice, Gliwice, Zawiercie and Częstochowa. Long-distance trains run towards Warsaw, Gdańsk, Gdynia, Wrocław, Kraków, Bielsko-Biała, Bohumín, Prague and Vienna, depending on the timetable season. For some southern and eastern districts, local trains on the Sędziszów / Olkusz route may stop at Sosnowiec Południowy, Dańdówka or Kazimierz instead of Główny.

Caution Note: The Sosnowiec railway junction is undergoing modernisation. Access to platforms, routes through the station and stopping patterns may change. Always check the current timetable and departure platform shortly before travel.
