Sosnowiec is a city in the Silesian Voivodeship of southern Poland, in the historic Dąbrowa Basin, about 10 km east of Katowice. It has about 186,000 residents and forms part of the Metropolis GZM, the large urban area of Katowice and neighbouring cities.
Sosnowiec grew mainly in the 19th and early 20th centuries as an industrial and mining centre on the edge of the Upper Silesian conurbation. Coal mining, textiles, railways and heavy industry shaped its urban fabric, but many mines and factories declined or closed late in the 20th century.
The city is sometimes described locally as a “city of four cultures”, reflecting the Polish, Jewish, German and Russian communities that influenced its development during the industrial boom. Today the main things to see are industrialists’ villas, churches, former factory districts, railway architecture, modernist public buildings, parks, mosaics and the historic centre around the main railway station.
The central area is around Sosnowiec Główny, 3 Maja, Modrzejowska, Warszawska, Zwycięstwa and Małachowskiego streets. Małachowskiego has become the main strip for cafés, bars, restaurants and small cultural venues.
Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport (KTWIATA) is about 24 km north of Sosnowiec. It has domestic, European and holiday flights, including Mediterranean and Red Sea destinations. Public transport to Sosnowiec is by Transport GZM bus M19 and by rail via the airport-area station.
Bus M19 runs between Sosnowiec and Pyrzowice Airport via Będzin and Psary.
Pyrzowice Lotnisko railway station is within walking distance of the terminal area; check current rail connections before travelling.
50.27919.1261Sosnowiec Główny is the main railway station, in the city centre. It handles regional, long-distance and some international services. Check departures for the exact station, as rail works and timetable corrections may change platforms and routes.
Frequent regional trains link Sosnowiec Główny with Katowice, Gliwice, Zawiercie and Częstochowa. Long-distance trains run towards Warsaw, Gdańsk, Gdynia, Wrocław, Kraków, Bielsko-Biała, Bohumín, Prague and Vienna, depending on the timetable season. For some southern and eastern districts, local trains on the Sędziszów / Olkusz route may stop at Sosnowiec Południowy, Dańdówka or Kazimierz instead of Główny.
Note: The Sosnowiec railway junction is undergoing modernisation. Access to platforms, routes through the station and stopping patterns may change. Always check the current timetable and departure platform shortly before travel.
FlixBus stops in the area of the main railway station.
FlixBus — search for “Sosnowiec, Dworzec PKP” and confirm the exact departure point in the operator’s system.
Local and metropolitan buses are part of the Transport GZM network. Bus M4 is one of the main routes between Katowice and Sosnowiec; journey times vary with traffic.
Sosnowiec is a major road junction in the conurbation. Main routes include E75, S86/DK86 towards Katowice and Tychy, DK79 towards Bytom, Jaworzno and Kraków, DK94]] towards Dąbrowa Górnicza, Olkusz, Kraków and Wrocław, and S1 towards Bielsko-Biała, Pyrzowice Airport and Zwardoń.
The A4 and A1 motorways run nearby. From Kraków, take A4 west; from Wrocław, take A4 east; from Warsaw, take the routes south-west towards the Upper Silesian conurbation. Traffic is heavy on S86 between Sosnowiec and Katowice during peak hours.
Parking in the centre is mostly in small street-side or municipal car parks rather than large park-and-ride sites.
Tickets are shared across most buses, trams and trolleybuses in the GZM network. They can be bought through ticket machines, selected points of sale and mobile apps. Always check the current tariff before travel.
Metrorower is the GZM metropolitan public bike-share system, operating across Sosnowiec and many other cities in the metropolis. Rental is via the app. A standard ride is charged by time, and subscriptions include 60 free minutes per day. Public transport season-ticket holders may also have daily free minutes after account verification. Check the current price list before using the system.
Sosnowiec has useful cycle links towards Katowice, Będzin, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Stawiki, the Przemsza riverside and the Three Emperors’ Corner.
