A Brief History of Lodz[edit]

Rather than have a dull negative view of Lodz, which does have an interesting history, I thought I'd take a few bits of it's past and add it here in the UNDERSTAND section. I used some of what Huttite wrote, and simply reedited some things I found online which I find to be true about Lodz. It, too me, seems preferable to writing it's a dull grey uninteresting city of death... Because it's not. I want to write more about art and culture and film and nightlife later, perhaps in other sections. Comments. (WT-en) khrystene 12:24am 30 Dec 2005 CET


Negativity[edit]

I'd like to know who wrote this "Lodz has never been beautiful" etc, over and over again. There is beauty in Lodz, even if not immediately evident. THere's a plethora of 18th C architecture and the arts scene is amazing... not to mention film...

It may not be the oldest city in Poland, but then again, Warszawa was mostly rebuilt after WWII so only the Praga side of the Wistula remains it's 'actual' age.

As for beggars, there are beggars EVERYwhere in Europe and around the world for that matter... I don't think it's isolated in Lodz.

Beggars and Safety

I mentioned beggars in the stay safe section, beacuse robbery and theft is an important issue in a city that has a high unemployment rate of nearly 13% (In 2003) (2004 statistics are not yet avaliable from the Central Statistical Office, which keeps records for the Polish government) I don't deny that beggars can be found elsewhere or that some cities have a higher number of beggars than others, but I found this to be an important issue to address

The most important statistics for the city that relate to staying safe are the following:

Crime/ Number of incidents

  • Theft/ 13,845
  • Burgulary/ 12,137
  • Robbery/Theft by assault or criminal coercion/ 2,482
  • Assault/ 291

Of course there are beggars and theft and other things associated with poverty, however after having lived there and (in comparison) in Sydney, Australia, I would suggest that the average visitor would have to be as careful in Lodz as in any large city anywhere. The tone of the comment was rather overly negative in my personal view, which is why I questioned it. Lodz has always had a 'bad rap' for various reasons, and I don't think that being scared when you get to Lodz is a good idea. Moscow these days is incredibly frightening according to friends who have been there, and yet, many many people still go there as it's an interesting city. The best idea is to have a few coins in your pocket in case you're hassled by beggars. The tragedy is, that without more work (and tourism can provide lots of work opportunities), there will continue to be many very poor people and thus REAL beggars in Lodz. Photo, Galeria Lodzka, Orbis Grand Hotel[edit]

Khrystene, would you possibly be able get a photo of Lodz so we can place it in the article?

I figure you're the one that added the info for Galeria Lodzka. I've been searching for information for this place, but whereas my Polish is very subpar I was unable to find anything except the name of the place, which is in a photograph with myself and friends. Could you possibly find a website for this mall?

Why?[edit]

Actually nothing was "reverted", however, you're right some of your changes were removed. It appears when I updated the article I copy and pasted the entire article back in and not just the part that I had worked on. I'll fix it later. -- Sapphire

No, there were some big changes especially with listings and a huge amount of research went into finding phone numbers, addresses, and websites. Article layout[edit]

I'm glad others have taken the time to make this one of the better entries on wikivoyage, but its format differs from all of the others I've seen and is rather hard to navigate as familiar features in this unique format are in different places. In my opinion, the different look adds very little to the article, in fact it could be argued that it detracts from an otherwise impressive effort. It took a while to find this section so I could add this quick note. Again, it's a nice entry - I've learned quite a bit about Lodz and look forward to paying a visit - but could we just keep this article in the standard wiki format, please? I don't know how to revert to the usual format (or how someone got it to look like this in the first place) or I'd do it myself.

This is one of the better entries? I wouldn't go that far. Anyhow, yes, I agree the design and somewhat unusual use of bold lettering should be improved. I'll try and get to it later today, or Monday. By the way, when are you planning to visit? Internet Cafe del Mondo[edit]

I do not live in Lodz, BUT I was at 55 Piotrkowska Str. yesterday and there is no trace of an internet cafe. The actual building of 55 Piotrkowska Str. seems to be an outlet. Double listings[edit]

We generally don't list places twice so I'm not sure how to proceed with places like Karol Scheibler's Palace/Film Museum and White Factory/Textile Museum. I think they should be kept only in Museums section.

Another thing is Manufaktura - one of the city focal points, 19th century factory turned shopping centre with cinemas, restaurants, a museum (or two) and a hotel - listed in basically every section of the article. I was thinking of creating new subsection under See: Industrial heritage and putting there Manufaktura, Księży Młyn (another large abandoned factory planned for 'revitalisation'), EC1 (not yet in the article, cultural centre in an old powerplant) and OFF Piotrkowska (gentrified hipster hub with bars, shops, ateliers etc. in, yes, you guessed, old factory). We could describe the industrial heritage it in general in an article and use markers to help travellers locate the main points of heritage. I believe that Manufaktura is so huge that every type of attraction (shopping centre, particular restaurants, the cinema, the hotel, the museum) could use a separate POI, and now with marker clustering displaying those should not be a problem.
I did mention the issue of some places having double nature (e.g. a "see" historic building you may want to just, well, see from the outside that also has a "do" or "buy" or "drink" role) and that we should be able to invoke a specific marker / number more than once sometimes ago in either the Pub or the Dynamic Maps expedition, but was brushed off.   • The School of Polish for Foreigners in the University of Łódź - Offers courses in Polish for periods of one month, five months, and two nine month programs. [1]

Work[edit]

Numerous international companies have operations in Lodz, since Łódź is the third largest city in Poland and has a high amount of technically skilled labor.

Native speakers of English, German, French, Spanish and Italian can usually easily find a job in one of many language schools in the city. EU nationals will find this process easiest.
