Multiple alphabets[edit]

For travelers, contact with written Azeri will be overwhelmingly in the Latin alphabet, and I think the inclusion of all three alphabets in the pronunciation guide is visually overwhelming (and overwhelming is especially undesirable when it comes to phrasebooks). I'd like to remove the other two, and then put a long infobox on the right showing the three alphabets next to each other. Thoughts? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:13, 27 March 2009 (EDT)

I thought that adding the persian/arabic script was necessary since that is used in Iran. Since I had gone that far, I figured I might as well include cyrillic (since that was used until just 7 years ago & not haing been to Azerbaijan, I don't know how much is left in cyrillic). As long as all three are shown on the page, feel free to do what you propose. (WT-en) AHeneen 23:16, 27 March 2009 (EDT)
On second thought, how about just axing the cyrillic. According to Wikipedia, Azerbaijani is really a macrolanguage with North Azeri (Azerbaijan) and South Azeri (Iran) being mutually intelligible. While the traveller will be more likely to encounter the latin script...there are more speakers (24mil. vs. 7mil.) of south Azeri using the Persian script. Given this, I think leaving out the cyrillic and keeping the latin & persian scripts will not be too overwhelming. I'll go ahead and do that (you can use history to see the three, if you want to put in an infobox).(WT-en) AHeneen 00:19, 28 March 2009 (EDT)
I like this solution—it already looks much more manageable. I don't think you'll see much Azeri in Cyrillic at all, unless it's on a sign that also has a Latin transliteration. And even then, I can't recall seeing it used anywhere in Azerbaijan. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 01:41, 28 March 2009 (EDT)

Name?[edit]

I thought the language was just called Azeri, not Azerbaijani. If so, the article should be moved to Azeri phrasebook. Pashley (talk) 01:33, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
