Star nomination (slushed)

[edit]

The Bangkok train goes on, now at station Rattanakosin, by far my favorite district :-) I'd be glad to hear your opinions. As I am not a native speaker, small bits might need rewriting as there is a lot of prose in the See section. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 22:04, 31 August 2011 (EDT)

It's my favourite part of Bangkok as well :). First reaction is that this is a quite superb article. There are so many attractions that the thought of tackling them all must have been a daunting prospect. I will give the article a thorough read when I have time, and post any comments here.--(WT-en) burmesedays 00:21, 1 September 2011 (EDT)
Nice article. I will go through more extensively later, but my first impression is that the History section needs a rewrite. The information is probably fine, but it does not read smoothly. (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 16:53, 2 September 2011 (EDT)

I would like some more comments before I go ahead and promote this one. --(WT-en) Globe-trotter 19:45, 5 November 2011 (EDT)

I have only given it a very quick read at this time but I agree with Peter that the History section needs a re-write. The intro to the See section needs some work to clarify it, maybe the individual attractions mentioned in the intro paragraph do not need to be bolded. Looks like that article has had a lot of development already put into it. I really like that Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho image, especially at the head of the article, personally I like the size of it, but should it be downsized though for all the normal reasons. Good work. -- (WT-en) felix 00:45, 6 November 2011 (EDT)

Result: slushed.

Star potential, some minor edit queries

[edit]

Great idea to move this article forward as a Star article.

It looks good stylistically, the contents appears to be concise and the prose well structured and informing. Typographically it appears to be consistently and attractively formatted and styles appear to be consistent with MoS and the regional style for Thailand already established thematically in the regional article set.

I have made some minor edits, none are content related. Please have a look below, noted there are the edits I just attended to, others listed are not-edited as I did not feel comfortable with my own POV, so seek some opinion.

  • "must see" sights can be found - - (use of quotation marks, who are we quoting) ...(changed to an italicised must see)
  • ☎ +66 2 225-7612(-4) - - (-4) looks a bit ugly (but I left as is as I am unsure of a better alt and listing all of them is even worse)
  • If you're coming from downtown - - do people use that colloquialism in English there, or is this just an artifact of US En usage, I might be getting a bit picky on that… If you are coming from the city centre … is a possible alt, (I changed to commercial district), GT please confirm this edit is appropriate to the district context.
  • you can take the Skytrain - - no you can't, that would be stealing and the police may become involved (changed to …you can use the Skytrain)
  • the temple is open from 08:00 till 17:00 - - the temple is open from (changed to 08:00-17:00… is consistent)
  • Front Palace - - hols closed… consider …(changed to …closed on holidays, just revert it if too wordy)
  • comfortable clothing — body jewellery must - - (changed to …comfortable clothing, body jewellery must)
  • Bamrung Muang Stores - - lacking a pavement in some areas! - - no need for ( ! ) so removed 9 of them, the prose is quite elegant enough, no embellishment required
  • Amorosa Bar and The Deck - - ☎ +66 2 221-9158(-9) same as above but at least it is consistent in the article… (left untouched)
  • 3-baht ferry ride - - (changed to 3 baht ferry ride, no dash)
  • there is a post office - - should this be Post Office ? (unsure on this so left it alone and seeking comment)

If there is a consensus sought on (Star) nomination I would be keen to support it. There is nothing obviously deficient in this article, indeed it looks really good and is a credit to the editors responsible for putting it into this condition. Anything above that is seems contentious will certainly raise no issue from me if it is either reverted or changed further. I just spotted those small issues on a quick look over so just went ahead and edited them. -- Felix (talk) 13:37, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

BTY, I was stalking Inas and noticed this ... "Post office should be capitalised where it is used as a proper noun, but not when used generically. It should by hyphenated when saying something like post-office building, where hyphenation is required for meaning, but I think not otherwise. (Posted by -Inas (talk) 09:58, 4 January 2013)
That seems like a valid POV, not sure if it is an accepted POV here but is seems to make good sense to me. -- Felix (talk) 14:14, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I wonder what's wrong with the exclamation marks? Lively writing is encouraged, and some prose turned quite boring by removing it. Especially the one about human-sized Buddha images; might as well completely remove that sentence now or it should be reworded, as without an exclamation mark it just looks plain. Globe-trotter (talk) 11:26, 31 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm trying to improve this article, but I don't see how many of these suggested changes are an improvement. Some issues I have:

  1. I think "must see" is better than the restyled must see. By italicizng that, it emphasizes that these are absolute must see attractions you can't miss. By writing "must see", I tried to emphasize that these are traditionally regarded as the "must sees" by the usual travel brochures, but that one doesn't necessarily need to agree with that.
  2. Siam Square, Pratunam, Silom and Sukhumvit taken together is often referred to as "downtown". Calling them "city center" would be wrong, as Rattanakosin is a part of the city center. Calling the area "CBD" is wrong, as it consists of several central business districts, and the term is not in common use. The same applies for "commercial district", which is not understood. So I'm not sure how to refer to those districts taken together without using "downtown". I have renamed to "city centre" for now, but I think it's wrong and might be confusing.
  3. How is "take the Skytrain" wrong? You can say "I take the metro" or "I take the bus". Use the Skytrain just sounds wrong.
  4. I don't see how it's wrong using "till" in a sentence. It's not a listing, so it doesn't need to be abbreviated.
  5. By using a comma, the sentence about comfortable clothing became difficult to read. I added "and".

The other changes you have suggested I also don't quite understand. Globe-trotter (talk) 17:44, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Distributing images more evenly

[edit]

Just as in the case of Ayutthaya, the images are bunched up - ah, what the heck? Just look at Talk:Ayutthaya#Distributing images more evenly. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:15, 1 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Ikan Kekek. I moved the images to the position in the text where the subject of the image is mentioned. It is very usefull in mobile mode, the description is then just below the image. I that what you had in mind? --FredTC (talk) 12:56, 5 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
No. Wikivoyage guidelines, shown as Wikivoyage:Image policy#Minimal use of images, are to distribute images evenly throughout the page. Right now, there are areas with 3 images in close succession and other areas with no images whatsoever. Of course I understand the idea of putting the images in the same section where the attractions are discussed, but the result of that would usually be to bunch almost all of them in the "See" section, and that's undesirable.
