Structure of this region
[edit]There are 17 linked cities in this region and 16 red-linked cities. And of those 33 destinations, 32 are listed under one sub-heading "Towns and villages". What can we do to clean this up? Some questions I have:
- Do any of the red-linked destinations really need to be kept?
- Should this region be broken into smaller regions? I'm not necessarily sold on that idea. I think sometimes "Greater City" kind of regions like this are good candidates to have more than the usual nine cities.
- At the very least, is there a more meaningful way to split the list of linked destinations than "Cities" and "Towns and villages"? Would it help to break it down by direction or by council area, such as Inverclyde and Renfrewshire (south), Dunbartonshire (north), and Northwestern Lanarkshire (east)? -Shaundd (talk) 06:52, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- I think 20 to 25 articles in a bottom level region is OK but as you say 33 is getting a little large. In principle red links are fine on an article when it shows pages that are needed for a region. The challenge is identifying which ones; need to think what people may enter in the search of Wikivoyage. Maybe just towns over 10,000 population or some point of interest people would visit (tourist or business)? Also could consider merging some of the smaller villages together. I was actually looking at Central Belt (Scotland) this weekend, Clackmannanshire I do not think will have many city articles, is there some region title that could be used to merge into Stirlingshire? --Traveler100 (talk) 07:07, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- I think we have a fair bit of agreement. I'd like to see the list narrowed down a bit to what makes the most sense to the traveller -- be it because the town/village has name recognition (e.g., point of interest) or sheer size. I'm also not opposed to merging articles for communities that are close together where it makes sense. If you're not in a rush, I'll try to do some research over the holidays and come up with suggestions.
- If we end up with a large number of destinations in the region, I do think we need to find a better way of sub-dividing the Cities section. 20 bullet points could be quite difficult to get through.
- Fully agree on Clackmannanshire, I'll make some further comments on its talk page. -Shaundd (talk) 19:01, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

- Of the red links, I think that only Clydebank need to be kept. There are currently a couple of Glasgow listings that really belong there. I am busy at the moment, but will look more into this next year. AlasdairW (talk) 20:36, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- I was wondering if an article should be created for Coatbridge, which would include Airdrie (currently red-linked). It seems to have a decent population (43,000 per WP, 80,000 if you include Airdrie) and a handful of attractions (Museum of Scottish Industrial Life and Dumpellier County Park seem to be the main ones). I haven't checked, but I'm assuming a place that size would have places to eat and sleep, so it would meet our wiaa requirements. I suggest including Airdrie with Coatbridge because from the research I did, there doesn't seem to be any significant attractions there that would warrant creating a separate guide (and Airdrie and Coatbridge look like they're right next to each other on the map). -Shaundd (talk) 08:07, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
- A city article for the Coatbridge-Airdrie area sound like a good idea, there is a gap in articles in that part of Greater Glasgow. Suggest creating Coatbridge and as you say adding POIs in Airdrie to it. Can always be split later if there is enough information. --Traveler100 (talk) 09:45, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
- An article for Coatbridge looks good. I have often passed through the town on the train, and the museum looks worth visiting from the small amount that can be seen from a passing train. An Airdrie article used to exist, but never had any useful content (look at WT). A quick look showed 2 hotels in Coatbridge. AlasdairW (talk) 12:23, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
- OK, I can work on putting a Coatbridge guide together. I should have more free time in the next couple of weeks. -Shaundd (talk) 03:13, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
