Hello![edit]

Welcome to Wikivoyage!

Thank you for your contribution to our Nuremberg article.

To help you contribute, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about our policies and guidelines and our house style as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.

However, even more important than following every guideline is to PLUNGE FORWARD and write something useful – someone might be along to help with the proper formatting later - but please don't tout!

Add your home town, or a place you know well or write some insider tips - but don't use first person pronouns.

If you need help, check out Wikivoyage:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. We're looking forward to seeing you again here on Wikivoyage! -- Alice 09:41, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Plunging forward[edit]

I see that you have immediately started to plunge forward and edit our Wikivoyage:FAQ.

What user names have you used for your edits at wikitravel.org, please? -- Alice 10:03, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

I have never edited Wikitravel. I can to this site via wikipedia discussion. Looked like a good idea then realised it was similar to Wikitravel which I occasional read. Was wondering what the connection was? --Traveler100 (talk) 10:12, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How interesting.
What was the "wikipedia discussion" that brought you here?
What user names have you used for your edits at Wikipedia, please?--118.93.73.30 10:37, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Mentioned at WikiProject Hiking. I use the same name. --Traveler100 (talk) 11:15, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your quick and helpful response.
Here's something you might like to read: https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/09/05/wikimedia-foundation-seeks-declaratory-relief-in-response-to-legal-threats-from-internet-brands/ - afterwards if you want to enlighten yourself further I'm sure any good search engine will kickstart your quest...
w:User:Traveler100 has a very impressive track record at the English version of Wikipedia and I'm wondering if you would do a little favour for me to establish your bona fides?
Would you add this phrase to your user talk page at Wikipedia while you are loggged on there as Traveler100: "Have a prosperous and productive New Year, Alice!"
Merry Christmas!-- Alice 11:26, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Done. Oh and thanks for the useful link and update to FAQ. I do not think I will be the only one to wonder about this.--Traveler100 (talk) 11:39, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My pleasure - and welcome aboard once again! -- Alice 11:43, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi, Traveler100. I'd like to join in welcoming you to Wikivoyage. I also want to let you know that I deleted a question you asked in the FAQ. The FAQ is not a place for people to post their own questions (though you're always welcome to post a relevant question on Wikivoyage talk:FAQ). I think you probably now have a better idea of how it is that most of the content here is the same as on Wikitravel, and I'll add that content, here and on Wikitravel, is not copyrighted but subject to copyleft guidelines which require that the editing history of every page be preserved. So no, there is no "blatant copying" from Wikitravel, which does not own anything but a website (in other words, I believe I speak accurately in saying that they own none of the content on that site except for their logo). This site does not tolerate copyright violation. For the future, please keep the Wikivoyage:Travellers' Pub in mind as a good place to ask any kind of general question you're curious about. Or you can ask it here on your own talk page, and people will read it here. All the best, Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:18, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, as I'm sure you already know as an experienced Wikipedian, Traveler 100 most of the contributions on both Wikitravel and here on Wikivoyage are copyright - it's just that the copyright owners (typically the authors that made the edits) have been generous in licensing their copyrighted contributions.

Both sites are hosted in the US, which ratified the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (Berne Convention) on 1 March 1989 {it had already been a member of the less complete and practical Universal Copyright Convention (UCC) since 16 September 1955}.

Effectively, this means that all of our editors who are citizens of (or domiciled in) any sovereign state that is a member of either of these treaties (or has a bilateral treat with the US - ie most countries of the world) can claim copyright protection both in the US and all other territories that are signatories without any further formal requirement other than publication.

{Previously, under the UCC, any local formalities in signatory territories needed to be met by using a notice of copyright in the form and position specified in the UCC; ie: the symbol © accompanied by the year of first publication and the name of the copyright proprietor (example: © 2007 Singapore Alice) placed prominently so as to put everyone on notice of the copyright claim. This all changed when the Berne Convention was signed by the US and its Federal law was subsequently changed to make copyright notices optional.}

Although there are still territories such as Afghanistan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Iran, San Marino, Turkmenistan and Tuvalu that offer little or no copyright protection to either domestic or foreign authors but, as far as I am aware, we haven't had many contributions from nationals of those territories that are not also domiciled in signatory territories (and even fewer where those unprotected authors are the sole or even major contributors to Wikivoyage articles) - but for practical purposes the vast bulk of Wikivoyage's content is protected by both US federal copyright law and that of most territories foreign to the US. -- Alice 23:05, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Issues concerning photos of hotels and restaurants[edit]

Please be aware that uploading promotional photos, such as photos of resort restaurants of no obvious intrinsic interest as unusual landmarks and such, is prohibited under Wikimedia Commons policies. Please see here: [1]. Several of the photos you've uploaded are questionable. I see that a few are on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States, which should satisfy the notability exception, whereby hotels that are sights of interest in themselves can and indeed should be included in photos on this site, but I question the photo of the Ayana Resort's restaurant in the Jimbaran article. Have a look at the relevant policy on including photographs of hotels and the like here: [2]. All the best, Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:54, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback. Still feeling my way with what goes and what does not go on this site. Was not intended as advertising, I have no connection to any tourist company (except the fact I stay a lot in hotels). I think the NRHP photos should stay but having now read the accommodation listing page you referenced I see your point with the Jimbaran image. --Traveler100 (talk) 12:13, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're most welcome, and I appreciate your constructive attitude and helpful edits. There may be an argument for the Jimbaran image. Think about the wording and examples in the policy, and if you feel that the image is justified, please explain in Talk:Jimbaran. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:41, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The images are uploaded to Commons, with a quite different policy. Places need not be notable or sights, the images just have to be realistically useful for an educational purpose. I think images of restaurants, like the one mentioned, easily fulfil that criteria, e.g by allowing comparing (architecture etc. of) restaurants of different locations, types or times. Also promotional images are useful, at least to show how different businesses have tried to promote themselves (even when they have no other qualities). As for using the image on Wikivoyage, that is up to the project. --LPfi (talk) 12:03, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was referring at first to Commons policy. My first link is to the Upload Wizard, where you can see the following statement:
"We can't accept works created or inspired by others. This includes material such as promotional photos." There are two exceptions, neither of which clearly address promotional photos. So it is up to interpretation whether promotional photos of restaurants, hotels, and the like are OK under this policy, and I don't know what kind of discussions there have been in Commons to set policy. So I will take your point that maybe such photos are OK for Commons, but there is a separate Wikivoyage policy that I also link to, which governs the use of promotional photos here. Map Sources[edit]

If you need some help to understand Map Sources you can ask me because I was the programmer. The main idea was to be independent of the tools server which maybe should be closed in future. Unfortunately, because of the migration maintenance I had not much time to be at all places. A smaller problem is the placement of dotm tags (see for instance Washington, D.C.). The templates and javascript must be rewritten to estimate the shift of the coordinates link. --RolandUnger (talk) 08:05, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Screenshots[edit]

I replied at Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub#High resolution screenshots. If there's any way you could get me those screenshots today, so I could forward them to the press before the weekend, that would be really fantastic! --Peter Talk 16:56, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, here are the screenshots to be re-uploaded in high resolution:
The corresponding article is linked from each file page, and you can just re-upload directly over the current ones. Let me say too that I really appreciate your willingness to do this, and that I hope this isn't too much! This is for what may potentially be a pretty major, important article on our site. They will also be useful for future press use. Thanks! --Peter Talk 17:11, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for a comment[edit]

Hi Traveler100, Recently you commented on one of the talk pages that you thought Singapore and Diving the Cape Peninsula and False Bay are too long. Can you remember which page this was on? Cheers, • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:54, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do not think that was me. I have been looking at the indexing of travel topics and Diving the Cape Peninsula and False Bay was the place I started. Replacing the travel topic tag at the top with more compact and useful breadcrumbs, see Talk:Travel topics. Also made a suggestion at Wikivoyage talk:Image policy on collapsing images on the diving pages. Have definitely not made any comment on Singapore article. Have commented on Talk:Main Page New that new page proposal was too long in length and should change to single rotating image so fits better on typical screen. --Traveler100 (talk) 09:05, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kudos![edit]

I just want to say that your work in organizing topics is awe-inspiring! Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:23, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, glad to know it is appreciated. Still some way to go. Have just about finished indexing the travel topic on the main travel topic page, then need to start on the topic pages not listed. --Traveler100 (talk) 10:28, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that[edit]

Wow - I agree with Ikan K - amazing work! it is appreciated - that is a lot of work done - also thanks for correcting my Brit mistake!! sats (talk) 15:03, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quick response[edit]

Hi, thanks for the very quick response and change to the discount airlines :) Also for your work on the travel topics. - Torty3 (talk) 21:50, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hiking in the Nordic countries[edit]

I noticed you rated Hiking in the Nordic countries. I also read you have been active at a hiking project at Wikipedia. I'd be glad if you could comment further on the topic.

I think the article needs comments from "outsiders" about what missing information is most crucial. As you seem to have experience of hiking but not of the countries in question, I think you could give very valuable advice.

--LPfi (talk) 16:09, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I added the assessment tag because the article did not have one at all and outline is where things start. The article probably deserves a better rating. I will try and find some time to take a more detailed look. --Traveler100 (talk) 16:23, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I made some edits to the start section. Hopeful I have not change the intended meaning. Will make some additional comments on the discussion page.--Traveler100 (talk) 20:33, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your improving the language. Sadly (or not! we do not need public pathways over here) it did change the meaning. I think there are different expectations that have to be taken into account (i.e. my wordings do not tell things clearly enough), probably best sorted out on the talk page. --LPfi (talk) 21:15, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

PAGESINCATEGORY[edit]

Hi, I noticed this type of call in the Article status page you just made. Do you know if there is a similar call that would include the total page count including subcategories? so that I could say "there are XX Brazil articles" for example, showing all the pages in Category:Brazil and all its subcategories....Texugo (talk) 15:50, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have been looking for that too, but unfortunately have not found a way to do it automatically. What I have on my PC is a browser tools that will recursively go down a category tree and list all the article, but this is only a snap shot so would constantly have to be re-run and updated manually.--Traveler100 (talk) 17:09, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What you might find useful is this:

Is there a place where I can find a list of such calls?Texugo (talk) 15:56, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Magic words. --Traveler100 (talk) 17:09, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hum... the category tree will indeed be useful personally, thanks. I was just hoping to find a magic word that would help with tracking on the Brazil Expedition page.Texugo (talk) 17:21, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The way it is done on Wikipedia is that there is a project(expedition) template placed on the talk/discussion pages of any article that is related to that subject. The template will, among other things, place the page in a category. You can then do a count on that. Alternatively set up a bot that runs regularly and counts the articles down a category tree and writes the results to a page. --Traveler100 (talk) 18:13, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have an idea how we could create an article status table for a particular expedition grouping of pages, such as all those in Brazil. Will require some modification to the status templates, so if you do not mind I would like to wait until we have sorted out the current activities in this area before trying it out. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:32, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Uncategorized pages[edit]

Swept in from the pub

Is there any way to initiate an update of Special:UncategorizedPages? If not and this is a scheduled batch job, would it be possible to make it more regular? Say, update once a day?

Also is there a method, like a magic word, to display the number of articles in this list on a page? --Traveler100 (talk) 08:00, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I do not think there is such a magic word. The way enwiki does is to have users stick every article without categories in the a category of articles without categories :D Regarding the updates, the Wikimedia Operations team can initiate an update of that special page, as with all pages. I seem to recall that it is a scheduled thing, and they can probably adjust the time, but I doubt they'll be open to make it that frequent. You can try and ask on bugzilla tho or in #wikimedia-tech connect Snowolf How can I help? 09:02, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't it be better if you run it on a bot account? :) Snowolf How can I help? 08:55, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose I should have run it on a separate account. Nearly finished now though. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:57, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A friendly reminder...[edit]

...not to take action on an article nominated for deletion (beyond placing the {{vfd}} template on the page at issue) until consensus is established as to what should be done with it—which, per our deletion policy, usually does not happen until the completion of a discussion period on Wikivoyage:Votes for deletion of a minimum 14 days' duration.

It looks like you nominated South (New Zealand) at VfD at UTC 10:40 on March 11th, 2013, proposing that it be redirected to South Island. Then, only two hours later (UTC 12:39), you went ahead and redirected the article. In addition, you gave no indication on the VfD discussion that the article was actually redirected as you proposed, nor did you archive the redirected article.

Status change[edit]

Hello! I just changed a status of an article I edited: Jalasjärvi from stub to outline. I integrated it into a small city template. Was I allowed to do it or does it need some "official" procedure? Thanks! Dana --Danapit (talk) 08:49, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all doing that, in fact it is encourage. No formal process until we get to star status. Until then just make your own judgement, if anyone disagrees they can simply make their own assessment change. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:52, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thx! --Danapit (talk) 09:15, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Islands[edit]

I've started a discussion at Wikivoyage_talk:Article_templates#Island_articles_status_tags about status tags for islands. I'm concerned that tagging a remote, uninhabited island like Fernandina with a city status tag and city section headings is counter-productive, so please join in that discussion with any thoughts you might have. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:57, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Traveler100. Shaundd has launched the Banner Expedition, so we'd love to have you over there if you're interested in discussing the intricacies. Also, I think it is okay if you run the bot on all articles in only Category:Austria and its respective subcategories. Just to be clear, we're not running it site-wide yet, until the larger community has approved of such a change. When approval does come, I'll be sure to let you know when we can implement it across the entire site. Thanks! JamesA >talk 06:02, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for writing the bot. I'm good with it running on Austria. Cheers -Shaundd (talk) 07:40, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for deploying your bot. It seems to have worked well, so hopefully we'll be able to rerun it in a few weeks for the entire wiki. :) JamesA >talk 09:58, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what is happening here[edit]

http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Category:Rail_travel was created on April 9th - while http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Rail_Travel&action=history was created on February 17th - please check what you are doing. Thanks sats (talk) 02:01, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reason is that the original page was call Rail Travel and this is what the category and all child articles referenced. Someone then renamed it to Rail travel but did not bother to create the category or reedit the child articles. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:50, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK - thanks for explaining - my apologies - I had seen you as creator of the two items mentioned above - I was concerned that there were two parallel/duplicate items without good reason. sats (talk) 14:35, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery pages[edit]

Hi Traveler100, I see you have replaced the usabletopic template on a gallery page that is associated with a star topic page. Could you explain how this is appropriate? I have created an experimental gallerypage template that explains the status of the page to my mind more realistically. I would appreciate if you would take a look and give me your opinion on which is more useful to the reader and the contributor. Cheers,• • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 15:55, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was assessing it as a travel topic page but I can see that maybe it makes more sense to have a new type of page, as you have defined call a gallery, that is a supporting page of another one. I think however maybe we should have a general discussion on whether this should be on Wikivoyage or Commons. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:10, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am fairly sure that any gallery page for a WV article should be on WV. Otherwise it is likely to be edited by people who have no idea of what it is for.
I like the new gallery template. Should work well. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 14:37, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You have put a gallery page template on an experimental map page at Diving the Cape Peninsula and False Bay/Star Wall/Map. This is not a problem as it is an experiment. The purpose is to allow a map to be printed at higher resolution then in the article if the article is printed as part of a book. If it can be made to work, we may need another template for map pages, but no rush. It doesn't work quite as I wanted at this stage, but I hope that the book software will be modified to allow some control of the printout. This is probably a medium term project, but I thought you might be interested. Cheers, • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 14:30, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Talkback[edit]

Hello, Traveler100. You have new messages at Curtaintoad's talk page.

Template subst request[edit]

Hey, Traveler100. Would your bot be able to subst all instances of "Template:-"? It was a test created years ago and should never have been used, so I'd like to delete it without breaking all of the pages that currently use it. LtPowers (talk) 20:45, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Should it be removed from only mainspace articles or all references including user, talk and wikivoyage pages? --Traveler100 (talk) 05:22, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
All transclusions in every namespace; links like the one in my message above should be left alone. LtPowers (talk) 13:24, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
done--Traveler100 (talk) 13:55, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that was fast! Thanks! LtPowers (talk) 14:50, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like this was simply deleted, but {{-}} instances should have been replaced with em-dashes (—). Would you be able to easily fix this? If not, I could rollback the changes reasonably quickly, and you could give the bot another run with a replace operation. --Peter Talk 15:05, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry misunderstood. If you could easily rollback the edits that would be good. I can then to a swap rather than a remove. --Traveler100 (talk) 15:15, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, whoops. I should have checked. I'm sorry I wasn't clear. LtPowers (talk) 17:04, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well I sure botched the reverts [3] and made some misery for myself in the process... But it should all be back to the way it was now, so replace away. --Peter Talk 21:39, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will be a little more careful this time. Have done 3 changes. Please confirm this is correct, I will then do the rest. --Traveler100 (talk) 04:55, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That looks good. Again, I'm sorry for the confusion; when I said "subst all instances" I meant replacing {{-}} with {{subst:-}} (which has the same effect as replacing it with —). Thanks for your efforts! LtPowers (talk) 14:33, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
was my mistake misreading the request. Redone all now. Hopefully correct this time. Traveler100 (talk) 19:46, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Finnish National Parks[edit]

You might have noticed I have removed the merge template from Finnish National Parks. This was done based on discussion at the talk page. LPfi made a good progress with the content! I think it is usable now. Danapit (talk) 07:04, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Finding mystery articles[edit]

Hi there! I know you spent a lot of time making the numbers on the WV:Article status stats page balance out, so perhaps you can help me out. I am trying to do something similar on pt: (here) which should in theory be a lot simpler, since we haven't yet split our status tags into city, region, district, etc. We otherwise have the same article types and the 5 basic statuses all categorized by the same types of templates we have on en:, and as you can see from my page, the numbers of articles with statuses and the number of articles by type all add up perfectly. However, for both ways of looking at it, there are 609 articles missing from the total NUMBEROFARTICLES, and I can't for the life of me figure out where they are-- there are no uncategorized pages, no uncategorized categories, and I have used every possible combination I can think of in CatScan to try to find them, to no avail. I can only think of two possibilities: 1) NUMBEROFARTICLES is including some class(es) of articles that are actually not main namespace articles, or 2) there is a self-contained category tree of articles out there which is disconnected from the main tree (Categoria:Conteúdo) and which happens to be completely free of all status and type tags but which have some other mysterious, manually-inserted categories (and I do not know a way to search for categories which do not fall under the main category). Neither hypothesis seems terribly likely, and I am completely stumped as to where 15% of our content could be hiding. Do you have any ideas or insight here? Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated... Texugo (talk) 15:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is actually the same problem on this site. I have extracted all mainspace article, removed redirects and it does not add up to the same number as that given by NUMBEROFARTICLES. I think there are other page types being added to the total. I have not however found a method of listing all articles that NUMBEROFARTICLES uses to compare with the list of all mainspace articles. --Traveler100 (talk) 15:55, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Weird. Does NUMBEROFARTICLES count redirects or not? Texugo (talk) 15:58, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No it should not count redirects and by default only count mainspace articles, i.e. not pages that start with special names like wikivoyage: or Categoria: however I believe this is a systems setting (not sure where it is set though). Looking at the pt site I see only 3778 mainspace articles and 372 redirects. I would recommend downloading AutoWikiBrowser even when you are not authorised to use the tool to edit you can you it to generate lists of pages. For example by category or by type (under Source: Special pages). Note will first have to go to options-preferences to define the correct site. Traveler100 (talk) 16:07, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pagebanners[edit]

Hey, would your bot be able to add the default pagebanner ToCs? They should be added only to the destination guides (continents, countries, regions, cities, and districts), and only to articles that currently lack {{pagebanner}}. To complicate things, destinations on different breadcrumb paths should get different default images:

CanadaYes Done, United StatesYes Done, MexicoYes Done, EuropeYes Done, RussiaYes Done, Central AsiaYes Done, Turkey, CaucasusYes Done, MongoliaYes Done
{{pagebanner|Pagebanner default.jpg}}
North AfricaYes Done, SahelYes Done, Middle EastYes Done, South AsiaYes Done, East AsiaYes Done (except Mongolia)
{{pagebanner|Mena-asia_default_banner.jpg}}
South AmericaYes Done, West AfricaYes Done, Central AfricaYes Done, East AfricaYes Done, Southern AfricaYes Done
{{pagebanner|S-amer africa default banner.jpg}}
Central AmericaYes Done, CaribbeanYes Done
{{pagebanner|Caribbean default banner.jpg}}
AustraliaYes Done, OceaniaYes Done (except New Zealand)
{{pagebanner|Australia-oceania default banner.jpg}}
New ZealandYes Done
{{pagebanner|NZ default banner.jpg}}

Let me know if this is possible, and I'll then double check that I entered all this information correctly. Antarctica was handled manually. --Peter Talk 04:10, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And I might now be asking too much, but would it also be possible to add a pgname=X parameter for all cases of parenthetical names to get rid of the parenthetical in the banner name, e.g., Badlands (North Dakota) would get {{pagebanner|Pagebanner default.jpg|pgname=Badlands}} --Peter Talk 04:16, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
yes I can do that, although not sure about the pname parameter. Also I think I will need to do a second run to add the status icons to the banner. --Traveler100 (talk) 04:44, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I think I can do the removal of text in brackets and the icons all in one pass. Have you suggestion for test run area? Traveler100 (talk) 05:13, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps New Zealand? --Peter Talk 18:19, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at Wikivoyage:Article status stats there appears to be a number of pages with IsPartOf category but no status allocation and some travel topics with possible false tagging. May be a good idea to sort this out before mass edit. Traveler100 (talk) 21:20, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How should we go about that? It's not obvious to me how to find the problem cases. --Peter Talk 22:50, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Think I have found them, were a few Travel Topics and Itineraries with isPartOf tags. Traveler100 (talk) 09:25, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Have run a few tests, see user contributions of Traveler100bot . Note some corrections where made. I assume locations with brackets not at end of the name should keep default name? Category:Scuba diving Yes Done, Category:Travel topicsYes Done , Category:Itineraries (no default banner yet), Category:Phrasebooks (no default banner yet}. It might be worth renaming some of the default banners to make the name clearer and consistent with the other default banner names.
The page banner template may have to be expanded to deal with more categories. That should be simple enough. Cheers, • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 12:47, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Would be OK with the Asia banner for Southeast Asia, just keeping it simple. -- torty3 (talk) 15:06, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template[edit]

Hi there. Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "linefeed" - could you explain? Texugo (talk) 14:46, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. No special syntax, you just have to remove the carriage return before the <noinclude> tag. Texugo (talk) 15:10, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The span didn't actually do that, it was just counting the carriage return before the noinclude tag, so when i removed it, it was already working. I took the span out again, since it is unnecessary. Texugo (talk) 15:12, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Changing starnom template from status template to separate template[edit]

Hi there. I though you might be interested in this discussion. We are talking about changing the starnom template so that it goes at the top as a simple notice, and leaves the guidewhatever template at the bottom, so that starnom article still fall into their appropriate guide status category instead of only the catchall starnom category. This will imply some changes to the chart at WV:Article status stats, namely of removing starnoms from the count since they will already be included in the guide categories, and possibly displaying the starnom count somewhere else if you want. Texugo (talk) 18:47, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Other guides in the ACT[edit]

Hi -

To answer your question - It didn't have any [4]. ! --Inas (talk) 06:59, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

But there was, I can remember organising a few. Not sure if they have been moved in to NSW or been deleted. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:08, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We had a Hall, and a Naas once that weren't redink because they link to random places in other parts of the world.
Somebody linked Jervis Bay once, but that isn't actually even in the ACT, so that's gone --Inas (talk) 09:23, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The only other one is Tharwa, and that is covered in the Canberra article, because 99% of visitors there would be based in Canberra. --Inas (talk) 09:23, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

What on Earth is Rheinsteig/Gpx? There is over a megabyte of it & you're the only editor. Pashley (talk) 18:59, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is the coordinates of the route of the Rheinsteig trail. If you press the map icon top right on the article Rheinsteig you get a map of the walk. The blue trail line is created by the page gpx. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:27, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regions in the Netherlands[edit]

Hi Traveler, would you perhaps care to join the conversation on Talk:Netherlands about regions vs provinces? We set a goal to try and get the Netherlands to guide status, but it would be nice to get this sorted out before putting lots of effort into the 4 current region articles. Thanks, JuliasTravels (talk) 15:30, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Just to let you know, I created this new maintenance category and added it to Wikivoyage:Cleanup status stats. Texugo (talk) 17:21, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Usedom[edit]

Hi Traveler100, why is Usedom part of Central Europe and not Western Pomerania (Germany)? I find is slightly misleading. Thanks! --Danapit (talk) 07:34, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

the article is about the island not the town, which is both in Germany and Poland. Note the towns listed in the extra hierarchical region have breadcrumbs to the country regions. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:21, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I have overlooked that. Thanks for explanation. --Danapit (talk) 09:17, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Broken links[edit]

Hi Traveler100,

i just wanted to say thank you for all the good work you do to reduce the broken links. It is very much appreciated that you take the effort! I try once in a while but today you did 50 in a row. Adaptation of your status pages[edit]

Hi there. I just thought you might be interested to see how I have adapted and expanded (on pt:)the status tracker pages you came up with. Your pages gave me the idea to try and create a one-stop "maintenance panel" with links to and an overview of every possible maintenance-related issue. You can see what I came up with here.

Since it's all in Portuguese, let me give you a quick run-down:

  • Top-bar: links to New pages, Recent changes, VfD, public logs, abuse log, spam blacklist, Special:Statistics, and multi-lingual statistics
  • Status table: based on the one you made, but with added bar charts showing the balance of statuses for each row
  • Center left: based on your clean-up stats page, links to and numbers from the various maintenance categories
  • Center-center top: links to Special list pages most relevant to maintenance
  • Center-center bottom: links to tools: Special:LinkSearch, category intersection tool, CatScan, listing converter tool, image search tool, edit counter tool
  • Center right: status bars for standard templates: status tags, geo implementation, banner implementation
  • Bottom: Category trees

I've been putting this together over the last few months and find it pretty useful. Let me know what you think. Is it something we might be interested in developing for en: as well? Texugo (talk) 20:36, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

this looks good. If you want to update the status pages on the en site, please go ahead. The one thing I see missing is some explination text on how to address the problems, but I guess that text could go on the category pages. Traveler100 (talk) 05:48, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I was thinking it might be good to do mouseover text with short tips, but I wanted to figure out everything useful I could possibly include and get the formatting worked out before complicating the code even further. Texugo (talk) 12:53, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have been working on this here, with mouseover goodness where possible. Any comments? Texugo (talk) 19:28, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bot error - periods dropped from URLs[edit]

You might want to take a look at https://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Brockville&curid=4787&diff=2434588&oldid=2375012 - all of the national federal park listings in Brockville#Prescott are broken as a 'bot error has changed the .pc.gc.ca web domain (Parks Canada) to pc gc ca with spaces in place of dots. I haven't checked to see if any other articles are affected. K7L (talk) 17:43, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Woops. thanks for the head up--Traveler100 (talk) 19:15, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So 7 errors in 6000 edits, not bad but could do better. Actually scanning through the edits for the cases that were causing the error also identified a few errors from the listings conversion bot that I could fix. --Traveler100 (talk) 14:47, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried to clean up Calgary a bit. +1 403-NXX-XXXX, ten digits. There are still some converted listings where the address is in the description field and a couple of telephone numbers I had to look up using the venue's external website as the article had a missing digit or an extra digit. It might not be possible to catch every possible variant with a 'bot. K7L (talk) 15:08, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First off, the term "rolled back" is in error, since you performed edits other than a straight undo. Secondly, please explain why you removed a great deal of content. I have added it back. If you have a problem with the syntax of the "Get around" section, please rephrase rather than remove. Purplebackpack89 17:39, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for correcting the edits, both yours and mine. The previous edits had broken the pagebanner, the geo map template and the article status template as well as removing spacing from listings which some people spend a lot of time on. I saw there were other additions but though it would be easier if you simply adding these again, which you have done. --Traveler100 (talk) 05:52, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flights[edit]

Hi Traveler100,

I've noticed that you are filling up content for Chubu_Centrair_International_Airport which is great! I would just suggest avoiding too much detail about airlines (i.e. specifying that Cathay Pacific flies to Hong Kong) since this kind of information does change a lot. In my opinion just mentioning which cities (or for large airports just the countries) is sufficient. Please see Singapore's Changi_Airport. Anyway, just a suggestion for you to take or leave. What do I do next at El Camino Real?[edit]

I just finished all 21 missions at El Camino Real (4 received entries for the first time, and all 21 entries were improved in some manner). What do I do now to make it a proper itinerary? I have the beginnings of a seven-day itinerary (three missions a day) on the talk page...are there other things I should do? Purplebackpack89 19:45, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Still experimental?[edit]

Hi there! I was just wondering about these:

Are these still being experimented with, or can we get rid of them? Texugo (talk) 14:43, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think they can be deleted --Traveler100 (talk) 14:53, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Time to retire {{poisym}}?[edit]

Hi again. Just rediscovered this template after a few months. It is still marked as experimental and used in only two articles, but now that we have the dynamic maps working and the {{listing}} template has changed, those articles have double icons at the beginning of every line. Is it time to retire this idea? Texugo (talk) 18:20, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would not want to retire the idea until I see an alternative method on how to label points of interest along a route by type. --Traveler100 (talk) 02:26, 5 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pullman and hotel rates[edit]

Hi there! I think our little edit war over the Pullman Stuttgart Fontana raises an important issue - what rates should we quote to make sure we give useful information, and compare hotels in a fair way. I have indeed just booked said Pullman for two nights, double occupation, breakfast included for EUR 60 per night. Today's cheapest advance booking price is EUR 79 for weeknights, but I keep seeing offers of around EUR 75, breakfast included, on accorhotels.com quite regularly. Then there is the weekday advance booking rate, the flex rate, the rate for fair / special event days and finally the actual rack rate displayed somewhere in the hotel which is probaby exorbitant.

I am quite sure nobody pays the rack rate at the Pullman. I also believe except for business travellers forced to attend the trade fairs, nobody pays the top rate as well. Most travellers would book in advance, come over for weekends and generally snoop for the best price rather than just book off the hook. What rate should we give them to be a useful guidance of how much staying at the Pullman should be? Do we have fixed guidelines as to what rates should be quoted, and do they make sense? PrinceGloria (talk) 18:38, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have stayed many times there. Usual price paid is about €95 worst case €180. --Traveler100 (talk) 19:08, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So should I add a few more places to eat in Vaihingen for you? --Traveler100 (talk) 19:21, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Tell me which room (not) to get. I hope my status with LeClub gets me some clout and I will be able to get a nice room using your advice. I guess I'd rather lunch out in town - are the eateries with Porsche and Mercedes Museums any good? Where would you eat in the city centre? That said - by all means do add Vaihingen places as well, I may end up hungry in the evening as well. And do add loads and loads more content - this article does still need lots of help. PrinceGloria (talk) 20:25, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
PS. You must have been travelling in business, haven't you? Or did you always book to upgraded rooms?
PS2. I don't think we answered my general question though :)
The upgrade rooms have an extra small working room with desk, but in general all rooms are of reasonable size. Main thing is to ask for a room away from the train line as they start early in the morning (but the good rail connection is one of the plus points of this hotel). Minor oddity when the window is open the air conditioning switches off. In Vaihingen first choice to eat would be Neuer Ochsen, but I will add some more. Only eaten at the museums at private events so cannot comment on normal facilities. In town centre try Ochs'n Willi. If you are in the area for some time then take the train to Esslingen in the early evening for the medieval Christmas market. In my opinion one of the best Christmas markets in Germany.Traveler100 (talk) 21:14, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Back to your original point, difficult to say. You have a good deal, but that is because it is advanced payment, any flexible booking will start at around €95. What should we quote, I think it should be a range. This site cannot just be aiming at tourist travelers with fixed plans but also business travelers that need to be flexible. Traveler100 (talk) 21:14, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tips on the rooms, will take your advice and try to get a room in the direction of Vaihingen. Just to make sure - I am there for a day, I decided to add Stuttgart in between Munich and Frakfurt because I kept getting great rate deals from Pullman Fontana and could never fit it into my schedule, just want to try it once. So, I am looking for a quick light bite for lunch and perhaps another one for early evening, not a Michelin-starred dinner - I will probably be in bed by dinnertime to wake up early for my ICE to Frankfurt.
As concerns the room rates - ranges are hardly informative, as the Pullman can be had for both EUR 60 when I booked it in advance for a fair-free weekend, and for EUR 240 when there is a trade fair. This does not provide too much of an information to anybody and doesn't help compare hotels, because all of them will have super sales and ultra high-rate days. I believe we should give a reasonably comparable rate. I always try to find the lowest consistently achievable rate over the coming months when I "price" hotels for Wikivoyage, because it shows how much a hotel is really worth, not how much you have to pay if you REALLY need to be there on a particular day. A run-down two-star hotel in Cologne is not worth EUR 300 per day, even if that's what they will charge you during Anuga. Do we even have an official guideline for that, btw? PrinceGloria (talk) 22:18, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Munich - districts[edit]

Hello again! Since I find you quite knowledgeable and informed about Germany and its tourist destinations, I was wondering whether you would find time to pop in to Talk:Munich and get yourself acquainted with the quite heated discussion we are having there after I proposed to merge some of the districts. I would love for you to contribute your opinion as well. PrinceGloria (talk) 22:52, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Happy new year! I hope you are well. Just wanted to ask you about the experimental warning tags you started a while back. They are making the non-existent Category:Open edit warnings show up in the list of wanted categories. If you have shelved that experiment, maybe we could remove or comment out those category calls from the template pages, at least for the time being, so we can keep it from cluttering the wanted list? Texugo (talk) 13:38, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It was used in discussions at Wikivoyage talk:How to handle unwanted edits to help create {{Unwanted edits}}. I have now blanked the contents of the experiment. --Traveler100 (talk) 14:34, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Calgary - Changing photo caption (Please help a noob)[edit]

I see that you are the photographer for the nice picture of the Elbow River bike path near the Calgary Stampede. I would like to change the photo caption to read "This bike trail along the Elbow River was washed away by the June 2013 floods." But I can't seem to find how to change it, and as it is your photo, I thought I should bring you into the loop anyway. I believe I have a photo somewhere of the flood damage there that I took during the 2013 Stampede, if you're interested. I don't know if that photo would be a useful addition to the Calgary article, though, as most of the bike paths are just fine. I'd appreciate any help & feedback you can give. Best regards, Country Wife (talk) 17:16, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I presume you mean [[File:AgricultureTrailBridge-s01.jpg|thumbnail|Bike trail along the Elbow River]] in Calgary#By bicycle? The caption is plain text, so editing the page to link [[File:AgricultureTrailBridge-s01.jpg|thumbnail|This bike trail along the Elbow River was washed away by the June 2013 floods.]] should update the caption without affecting the image. If you want to replace the image itself, you'll need to go to commons:special:upload to upload a new, free image and then edit the article to use the new image. K7L (talk) 19:21, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed the text. Bad news that the path has gone as it was one of the the few safe ways through the city by bike. Well I guess next time I am in town I will stay with charging through in an SUV. A picture after the flood would be interesting, I will also look though my collection for another section of the bike bath.--Traveler100 (talk) 19:27, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for your help! The paths are under repair, so that section may be back in place when you return. Let's hope so, anyway. And now I know what to look for when I need to change a caption in future. Country Wife (talk) 22:11, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've now uploaded the photo: [5] Turns out I was confusing the bridge at Agriculture Trail (east of the Stampede Grandstand) with the 3rd St S bridge (south of the Grandstand). But that whole stretch of pathway is still closed due to flood damage. [6]. Three pedestrian bridges on the Elbow upstream of the Stampede grounds were destroyed and need replacing. Anyway, hope you enjoy the photo. Country Wife (talk) 04:31, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong edit[edit]

Hi! Please, Budapest/Castle Hill must to change back! It is not a District! That is a subdistrict of the Belbuda (1st district). - - Globetrotter19 (talk) 10:50, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Should we have sub-districts of districts? Would it not be better to have a new district split of Budapest?--Traveler100 (talk) 10:57, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We have sub-districts in New York City, like Manhattan/Midtown, but their use is rare. K7L (talk) 16:34, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No Manhatten is designated a Huge City and Midtown East is one of many districts, not a single sub-district of a district of a city. --Traveler100 (talk) 19:18, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My opininion it should be merged in (Buda Downtown) Belbuda. Or let it in the present situ.... And than again 'That is a sub-district of the Belbuda (1st district).', and NOT a separate district (until anybody do not make a new district split of Budapest). - - Globetrotter19 (talk) 15:13, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Page count discrepancy[edit]

Hey there. I was wondering if you have any ideas about how to figure out why there is now a one-page discrepancy in the counts on the maintenance panel. It's been there for a couple of weeks now, and I've tried all sorts of catscan searches and everything, and can't figure out what I'm missing. Everything had lined up perfectly for months until this... Any ideas? Texugo (talk) 20:53, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Which numbers do you see no matching? --Traveler100 (talk) 05:23, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A discrepancy of 1 appears in two places: "Has status" in the upper right under "Standard templates", and at the red dot by the grand totals at the bottom of the table, where the totals differ by one more than the number of ghost articles (when the totals are correct there is no red dot). Texugo (talk) 15:18, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
you have added a few extra calculations since I worked on this page! I have never trusted the NUMBEROFARTICLES number and these calculations are based on that. How to you work out the number of ghost articles? --Traveler100 (talk) 19:21, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It has to be maintained manually, but someone wrote a nifty tool that does the counting automatically, and then you just have to fill in the number at Wikivoyage:Maintenance panel/Ghost articles. That does not appear to be the source of the problem, although I have not actually double-checked lately to make sure the tool's count is still accurate. It always was before at least. I think it's something else. Texugo (talk) 19:57, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I just checked it manually. It's not a ghost article because that count is correct. Texugo (talk) 20:04, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So did you find the issue or was it corrected by someone's edit? --Traveler100 (talk) 07:58, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, it wasn't me. Must be magic! Texugo (talk) 13:29, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A Fistful of Nuggets[edit]

Howdy! Many thanks for your great edits on the Project! Initially, I hoped that we could limit the edits to the nuggets on the table, but you've added something worthwhile here. The question is how do we factor it in? The simple way would be to include an Other Edits bit towards the end. Or is there a better way? Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated! Many thanks, Llywelyn2000 (talk) 10:34, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your articles: I breathe a sigh of relief, and lonely no more! Is it in order to have a themed article such as 'Blue Flag Beaches in Wales' or is that out of order? I do have the latest list. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 11:03, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to help, Wales is a destination that has been a little overlooked. As for a Blue flag beaches in Wales article, difficult to say. There are articles on activities such as Beachcombing and lists on themes of location like UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. A page which is just a list is not usually views favourably here, so you have to think what added value could you bring to a traveller in such an article as opposed to just linking to a web site that lists the places? Maybe explanation of what Blue Flag means, review of the beaches and obviously links to pages about the closest town. But maybe we need to think of something more than that? --Traveler100 (talk) 11:46, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting! just seen the D-Day_beaches article. AThe best option is to write about the individual beaches, with Blue Flag status, but I can't come accross any others! Therefore, as you suggest, I'll write it into the main 'Wales' article, with a map of all such beaches. Then if outgrows itself, maybe I could suggest a separate, free-standing article on the Community portal? Many thanks. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 13:04, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Beaches per se are generally considered points of interest that belong in the "Do" section of articles about the nearest locality. The D-Day beaches are obviously an exception because of their tremendous historical interest. If the Blue Flag beaches are really special and it makes sense to treat them as a unit, rather than just as individual points of interest in articles about the nearest town, perhaps they also would merit a travel topic article. Have a look through some of the other travel topic articles and see what you think. If you are unsure whether the topic would be a likely target of Votes for deletion, you can always put a draft of it in your userspace and then post a link in the Travellers' pub for people to look at and give some feedback. Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:12, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thinking of adding the beaches to the Wales Coast Path article. Currently collecting data together at User:Traveler100/sandbox-blueflag. If you want to help add coordinates, link and photo and content text to the sandbox, feel free. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:42, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with Template:Event[edit]

Hey there. Hope you're well! I just noticed that Andalusia has an {{event}} template for a holiday that happens every year on Feb. 28, so the year field of the template is obviously not filled in, but this causes it to appear in Category:Articles with out of date events. Since it happens every year, obviously it wouldn't make sense that we need to go into the article and update a year field every year (especially after this template takes off into the thousands), so we need a way to set repeating events so that they don't fall in the maintenance category. Any ideas? Texugo (talk) 13:18, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I also tried to make it so that only main namespace pages fall into the maintenance categories, here, but it doesn't seem to be working. Hmmm... (This part is resolved.) Texugo (talk) 13:41, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I implemented a fix. I don't know if it's the most logical code, but it seems to work. Texugo (talk) 16:03, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
that does not fix the problem it just ignores it. If you do not put a year in then no error, would be better if you could input annual in the year field. Although would to have lots of checks in the code so date checks do not go wrong. Note the idea was to input year and edit every year, this keeps changes going on pages to help search engine rankings. --Traveler100 (talk) 21:13, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
why marked as experimental, do people have to have your approval before they do anything in clean up? --Traveler100 (talk) 21:16, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Of course not, and in fact, there are several of my own initiatives carrying an experimental tag as we speak, but the fact is that this has never been anything but experimental. We were clearly still experimenting with it at the end of March when the last developmental discussion took place and we got rid of the problematic category system. As this is a new template designed to be implemented in tens of thousands of pages, we need to have clear community support behind it before we call it good (per Wikivoyage:Mediawiki templates#New MediaWiki template proposals. But remember, I'm one of the few who has expressed support for at and worked on tweaking it to work more acceptably.
Anyway, I do see your point above. Shall I change it to tag missing years as an error but ignore it if it says annual/yearly, etc.? Texugo (talk) 21:47, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template small option[edit]

Please don't add that to more than a couple of templates til there is consensus to start doing it that way. Thanks. Texugo (talk) 11:09, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

did not plan to. Want to do one that has no options and one that has options. In any case unless someone uses the option it will not make a difference to the page. --Traveler100 (talk) 11:11, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Admin?[edit]

Hi there. Your name came up in a discussion of people who might be good new admins. Please let us know if you'd be willing to pick up the mop if asked. We could use more hands on deck. And either way, thanks a lot for all the work you do!

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:56, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for considering me for admin. Before I reply could you provide some details of what activities I would expect to take part in?--Traveler100 (talk) 05:50, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing would change except that you would have more tools, which you could use, for example, to delete spam and block spammers. The rollback tool is also handy because it enables you to roll back multiple edits by the same person at once, when those edits are spam, vandalism or gross touting. I don't use the rollback tool too often, but it's helpful when someone is posting a lot of junk really quickly. The Wikivoyage:Administrators page explains what tools admins have. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:54, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
yes I would welcome the use to those tools on this site (have access to them on others). Sure I would welcome consideration as administrator, would try and spend a little more time on vandalism spotting but do not expect me to stop occasionaly questioning the current set of formats and policies as we try to improve things. --Traveler100 (talk) 05:58, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please do continue to question formats and policies! That's how things move forward, through discussion and debate. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:01, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Traveler100! Thanks for helping out with the article, I especially like the map :)

I have expanded the article a bit, uploading my own photos and writing a bit more about the route. What do you think. Anything that should still be covered? I find that the link to Commons under "Related sites" is not really prominent/easy to spot, is there some template I can use to refer to the large archive of photos I uploaded at Commons? Cheers, --Church of emacs (talk) 02:03, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

One idea is to add points of interest along the way as listing. If you place coordinates on them, they will display on the map. First think that comes to mind are the hut. Any places for suppliers, water etc.? Any interesting landscape points? Can add images to listing which will show on the map when you click on them. Also in the get in section some links to the transport would be useful. Does the train, bus and boat companies have web sites? --Traveler100 (talk) 01:15, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Flora and Funa section (what types of birds and other animal could you come across). Weather section. Old or interesting building, churches and bridges for example. Particular points of geographical interest. Dangers, are there designated rescue pick-up points? The hikes I have documents are in more populated areas but may still give you some ideas Rheinsteig, Rheinburgenweg and Wales Coast Path. --Traveler100 (talk) 21:31, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi Traveler100. You mentioned that there is a setting in the user preferences to show hidden categories. I looked through it twice and didn't find it. Please let me know exactly where would I be able to locate it. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 01:38, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Volubilis and Moulay Idriss[edit]

Hi Traveler100. Volubilis and Moulay Idriss have been merged. I think it makes more sense to have them as two separate destinations (even though they are close to each other) since they are really two very different attractions, that attract a complete different kind of travelers. Many people with and interest in Roman history only visit Volubilis and by putting it under Moulay Idriss it hides one of the major sights to see in Morocco too much in my opinion. (BTW - I created both articles, wasn't logged in at the time, so it was anonymous) Ezelhaar (talk) 18:06, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 05:46, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
the situation was that we had two stub articles to places close to each other. Simplest thing to do was merge them to make a complete article with full page template section headings. I can see however that Volubilis is one of those places that even though there is no place to sleep (technically definition of location) it deserves its own page. Have no problem with making them two articles as long as they are made complete articles. --Traveler100 (talk) 18:35, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to have a look at Template:Convert - it will convert temperatures, which is what I think your latest tests are attempting to do. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:27, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Vuno pagebanner[edit]

I was just looking at the Vuno article, and the pagebanner is so beautiful and striking that I wanted to see who added it. Your bot added it in 2013. Kudos! Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:00, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Does it have to be an extra region? Can't it be more like Iberia, Amazonia and the Levant? None of these are extra. The region in concern is a very significant part of South Asia.--AzaanJC (talk) 20:28, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Iberia is a region because articles it lists are in its hierarchy, Amazonia is an Extraregion, and Levant should be. All extraregion is saying is that it is another way of collecting sub-regions or cities together that is not part of the main hierarchical structure. Bengal has to be in this case as the cities mentioned are in different countries and it is generally accepted that the main structure is country based. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:49, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Discovery Islands-Quadra Island merge[edit]

Hi Traveler100, I responded to your merge tag at Talk:Discovery Islands. The area has been neglected over the years, but I've been reading about it and plan to add more info. False positives?[edit]

Hi Traveler100. Regarding the big 23,120 items list I have generated - I am still not exactly sure what you and Wrh2 meant in the Travellers' pub discussion page when you both mentioned that it has "too many false positives". Please explain exactly what type of articles you noticed in that list that were not supposed to be in it.

  • Did you mean that some of the items in the list were only Engvoy redirect pages instead of actual articles with corresponding articles on Wikipedia?
  • Did you mean that some of the items in the list, which do have corresponding articles on Wikipedia, already have a link on the Wikipedia page which sends their reads to the corresponding Engvoy article? (there should be around ~3,000 of those, which are only a small portion from the total 23,120 articles which need links back from Wikipedia).
  • Or maybe you meant something else?

Please be specific so that I can address the problem and try to remove as many items as I can which aren't supposed to be there. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 20:20, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here are a few example: Zurich, Ziplining, York, Yorba Linda. --Traveler100 (talk) 19:04, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh okay. In that case, it is not a big problem since the "false positives" seem to only be the articles which have names on Wikipedia that aren't identical to their names on Wikivoyage - there should only be around ~3,000 of those, which are only a small portion from the total 23,120 articles on the list. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 19:45, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

re: Winchester (England) being a false positive on Wikivoyage:Search Expedition/Missing links from Wikipedia/Guide articles‎‎, w:Winchester actually points to Winchester (the disambiguation page on Wikivoyage), so I think the script flagged it correctly and the Wikipedia article should still be updated. -- Ryan • (talk) • 06:06, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I did not spot that. Thanks for pointng that out, I see need to do more that a visible check. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:09, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm grateful to have a few other people helping out, and appreciate any feedback as to the accuracy of this script. Particularly now that redirects are taken into account and I've set it up to ignore disambiguation pages I think it should be fairly accurate, but I definitely appreciate the reports of any false positives as an opportunity to fine tune things further. -- Ryan • (talk) • 06:13, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Page creation vandalism[edit]

I don't mean to be critical as I'm sure you meant well, but articles created as page creation vandalism are typically deleted to avoid having to figure out what to do with them. Per past discussions it is fine to either undelete or recreate an article if you wish to expand it, but undeleting and then starting a discussion about where to redirect doesn't seem like a productive use of everyone's time. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:54, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why is it vandalism. The user created an entry to a good hotel in Romrod. This is actually a gap in articles in that area but Alsfeld makes more sense as it is larger and better known. As for your deletion Wolfschlugen, they were also valid eat and sleep destinations, in fact they were new to me and was thinking of trying them next time I am in Stuttgart as they are in a useful location. I had put a merge on the that page to Filderstadt but was giving the newly registered user the opportunity to do it himself, if not was going to do it later in the week. Yes he has created a few small place articles but I have moved the valid entries in them to nearby towns in most cases. --Traveler100 (talk) 19:01, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This user (or a copycat) is responsible for a significant portion of the empty articles on Wikivoyage and his contributions are typically deleted as soon as they are recognized. Please read pcv for the history and reasoning. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:04, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"I sure wish we could speedy delete pages where a) the page is not linked to b) there is no content and c) the page gives no indication as to where it is"
This is a wish not a policy but I agree if a page is an empty skeleton it should be deleted (others do not agree with this though). It the two cases you deleted however, they had valid content, admittedly the location information was not good in the original entry but that was changed before you deleted. As for linking to them, a solution was in hand but not got round to it, could of give a little more time (hence my 21 day atricleneedsimprovement proposal). --Traveler100 (talk) 19:11, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Please read the full thread - this user is a troll with a nearly ten year history of questionable contributions. He is active across numerous Wikimedia projects, and has had dozens and probably hundreds of sockpuppet accounts blocked across those projects. If you want to keep these two articles that's fine, but it is a longstanding practice to delete page creation vandalism as soon as soon as it is recognized to minimize the disruption that would otherwise be caused by having to figure out what to do with the contributions. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:19, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
So you are saying that this is not just some vandalism but a specific vandal, how do you know it is the same person? --Traveler100 (talk) 19:57, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ryan knows me as a long time vandal from wikitravel and wikivoyage so i don't understand why he thinks i create vandal pages. I have skitzophrenia. and iam not a vandal i use google maps for my resources. --DumfriesNative (talk) 20:06, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Traveler100, I think you have been here long enough to know who is telling the truth, not Ryan. --DumfriesNative (talk) 20:17, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok so now confirmed by the user (but how did you confirm); what this says to me is that we need a way of marking on skitzophrenic users' pages that they are sock puppet so that other users will keep an extra eye on there edits and remove things that are obviously vandalism (entries dating back to 2006 on talk page of Deletion policy is not an obvious place to notice things). Removing valid entries however sound more like personal targeting which I am sure is not encouraged. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:22, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Confirming the identity of a troll is mostly a matter of waiting until they do something that removes any doubt as to their identity - I usually keep an eye on any user that is creating multiple mostly-empty skeletons to see if they do anything that matches this particular user's behavior. There are a few specific things that this user does that help in identification, but as the pcv thread shows he changes his behavior based on talk page discussions, so I'd rather not call them out. I always reference the "pcv" thread when deleting this user's contributions or in talk page messages, but if there is a better way of making other editors aware of what's going on suggestions would be appreciated. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:10, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This is also the "new user" you don't want to discourage. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:54, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I should have included that one line listing into Yamba, and I actually went ahead and improved the listing. (I live in New South Wales and do care about the quality of the articles). I know you probably don't agree, but this user has proven to be quite a problem creating hamlet articles all over Australia (also recently having created an article for Queensland for a town with an official population of zero), and encouragement isn't exactly high on my priority list. I would much rather discuss this with them, but they really don't want to. Andrewssi2 (talk) 09:57, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OK, did not spot the pattern. Sorry did not intend to increase any difficulties. --Traveler100 (talk) 10:53, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wachau[edit]

Hi Traveler100, could you please explain to me this edit? The Wachau is a bottom-level region and most definitely not a park. If you have any doubts, please have a look at the German article, where it is classified as a region. –StellarD (talk) 20:33, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A region on English Wilivoyage has to be the parent of city articles. This is not the case it is a rural area in Lower Austria. The towns and villages in Wachau are also organized under Lower Austria. The hierarchy is a little more stricter and rigid than the German site. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:44, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
While regions usually have cities in them, I'm not aware of any guidance that makes that a requirement. See Category:Regions with no category for a number of regions that currently have no child articles. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:54, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That is a clean-up category highlighting article that may need attention. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:56, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but emphasis on the may need attention. As far as I know it is fine for a region to not have children, although it's not common. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:11, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Wikivoyage:Geographical hierarchy#Overlap avoid overlap between two destination guides. Wachau and Lower Austria as regions had common city articles. --Traveler100 (talk) 21:15, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'll bow out of this discussion since the argument seems to have changed - my sole point in joining in was that I was concerned by the statement "A region on English Wilivoyage has to be the parent of city articles", which I don't believe reflects existing site guidelines. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:26, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Other low-level regions for Lower Austria have yet to be developed, but they do exist, and I assure you that the Wachau is not administered as a park – it is a region. In any case I do not see that there has been any consensus on how to handle rural regions, and I strenuously object to the unilateral action of reclassifying this region as a park. –StellarD (talk) 21:53, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OK then undo my edit, change the isPartOf for Melk and Krems an der Donau to Wachau and in Lower Austria article create a Region section to add Wachau to. And move the article links in the See section of Wachau to a City section of that article. --Traveler100 (talk) 22:21, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"stop feeding the trolls"[edit]

I'm not sure if you meant to imply bad faith with this edit, but it definitely reads that way. I'd ask that, unless there is very clear evidence to the contrary, you try to assume good faith - even though we often disagree, everyone who contributes regularly to this site means well. -- Ryan • (talk) • 07:15, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A difficult subject I know as the editor has done a lot of positive work too, including correcting my typos. I could collate a list of examples of questioning articles existence, other editors then proposing how to improve rather than delete articles then not reacting and not making those suggested improvements. After initially being involved in many of these conversations I tried to back off and not get involved but still find having to come in to stop removal on information. I did not want to be accused of gathering information to victimise another editor. But take a look not just the last few months of vfd but also the many removal of red links and changing pages from British to US English and the many proposals to create and expand wikivoyage policies. It is just he prefers to talk and remove rather then expand, which is not always bad but does tend to distract other editors from constructive contributions. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:13, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's fine to disagree, but calling someone a troll is a very severe accusation. Please read some of these definitions. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:47, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Ikan. It's fine to tell someone that you have issues with their editing pattern or to ask others to get involved - everyone gets frustrated - but an accusation that someone is editing in bad faith is a really big deal and disappointing to see. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:31, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy, you undid my edits for Tangshan and Cangzhou[edit]

Hi, I recently migrated from wikitravel (username there is godhand) upon learning that wikivoyage is the official wiki for traveling. I've spent years accumulating knowledge about Tangshan and modifiying the wikitravel page for it, so after seeing the extremely low quality of Tangshan's wiki page here I just copied and pasted the wikitravel page for it here - all of which I have written.

Cangzhou's wikitravel page is also everything I have written, and I did the same for it.

I'm just confirming that I am the author of those two wikitravel pages, and would like to add all the wonderful information I have written over the years for these two off-the-beaten-path Chinese cities to wikivoyage. In the future, is there a way for me to confirm that I am the original author and not stealing content from wikitravel? Thanks, and please revert those pages back to my edits.

It is great that you are moving over to Wikivoyage but please be aware that the syntax of this site is a little different from Wikitravel. Adding actual factual information is more than welcome but please do not simply copy and past. For example article type and status tags/templates are different on this site and for listings there are formatted templates (see the icons above the edit area). Please add and extend to the pages not simply paste over what is already there. --Traveler100 (talk) 13:12, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, OK. Indeed I did copy and paste and in that process I did add a ton of actual, factual information - Cangzhou now has no information, and Tangshan is back to nothing but chinglish and useless information (the 'Eat' section, for example, is entirely worthless - it is meaningless nonsense and should be deleted). I have lived in Tangshan for four years now and am trying to promote a lot of what it has to offer. I am really unfamiliar with how to adhere to the template here, and I absolutely welcome you to edit it and make it good for wikivoyage - please, just redo my edits and fix it. As of now, Tangshan and Cangzhou pages are an absolute mess. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing how you have made them more wikivoyage-ish. edit: I should mention as well, that the Tangshan wikivoyage page currently is a copy and paste job - a couple years ago, all that nonsense on wikivoyage now is what was on wikitravel until I updated it. So what has happened, is that a copy and paste job without actual, factual information is still on here because my edits were removed. Godhand1 (talk) 13:21, 19 March 2016 (UTC)godhand1[reply]
Please just add the information about places of interest and eat, sleep, etc., under each of the section headings. Keep the formatting and status tags and templates as is they you will not mess other peoples work up. Yes you did add a lot of useful facts but you also added a bunch of Wikitravel templates that are not valid on this site and deleted template that are needed on Wikivoyage articles. Just asking to be careful and paste only the information not overwrite and add code that dos not belong on this site. Normally I would of fixed the changes but in the case of these articles it was too complicated to separate from the state the page was in before and difficult to understand what was lost. May I suggest a number of smaller changes rather than one bug one then we can help you learn about Wikivoyage. --Traveler100 (talk) 13:37, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Godhand1, welcome to Wikivoyage! A quick look at the edit history of Tangshan on Wikitravel confirms that you are not the sole author of that article, even if you did do a lot of the work. At any rate, the article's content is property of Wikitravel, not of individual contributors.

It would be a great idea if you had a quick read of our policies regarding copying content from Wikitravel (which is allowed, but is also strongly discouraged), as well as our copyright policies and manual of style, which is a little different to what you're used to.

I understand it's frustrating when you've put a lot of work into something and believe it ought to be very simple to copy all that over to your new project, but try and look at this as an opportunity to create even better articles on the destinations you care about. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:40, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy ThunderingTyphoons!, thanks for your input, I'll definitely check out the manual of style. Also would just like to confirm that I am basically the sole author of Tangshan's wikitravel page at this point, with only the Drink section not being my work. Hopefully I will be able to cross this information on over to wikivoyage when I get some free time. —The preceding comment was added by Godhand1 (talkcontribs)

If you'd permit me to interject: No, none of the edits of Wikitravel articles are property of Wikitravel (with the possible exceptions of edits made by Internet Brands employees). In other words, the truth is almost exactly the opposite of what you posted above: The article's content is copyrighted by (not necessarily property of) individual editors, not Wikitravel. That site's Creative Commons Copyleft means that the copyright for all edits is retained by the individuals who made the edits, but that they have agreed for others to be able to use and copy it without collecting payments, etc. That's why Wikivoyage was able to fork from Wikitravel in the first place. However, the rest of your points are correct. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:43, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your correction, Ikan. I've never used Wikitravel and don't know anything about their policies. Sorry for giving false information. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 14:56, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What to do with copyvio articles[edit]

Hi, Traveler100. You are an administrator, so please use your tools instead of inserting the copyvio template. Articles that are copy-pasted wholesale must be deleted, with an explanation posted in the offender's user talk page. I'll take care of this this time, but please, next time, if you see the problem and have the time to make 4 edits, make sure 2 of them are the deletion of the page and the insertion of an explanation in the copy-paster's user talk page. Thanks. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:56, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I see the user credited Wikipedia, so I don't think they violated any rules. In that case, is the copyvio template appropriate? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:59, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for jumping to conclusions before. The big red template set me off, plus, totally unrelated to anything on this site, I'm in Windows Update Hell tonight, having supposedly reverted an attempt by Microsoft to involuntarily update my system from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, then stupidly installing a bunch of optional updates, and now my sound card isn't working and some other program is giving me an error. So I'm truly sorry if I came across poorly above.
All the best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:07, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deleting redirects[edit]

Some of the recent redirects that were speedy deleted like "Visual art" or "Baden-Powell grave" seem like they are not obvious speedy deletion candidates, unless they are suspected to be vandalism or are problematic for another reason - in general, speedy deletion is reserved for obvious vandalism or things that are clearly against site policy (see also Wikivoyage:Deletion policy#Deleting vs. redirecting for guidance about keeping vs. deleting redirects). It's always helpful when people try to clean up the site, but since speedy deletion is a power reserved for admins I wanted to call this out as something that looked questionable to me. -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:39, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikivoyage pages are either about destinations or travel topics, Baden-Powell grave cannot possibly ever be destination or travel topic article. I think it would be crazy to start having redirects for every attraction. If Baden Powell's grave then why not Winston Churchill's or Carl Marx graves, or for that matter any interesting building or park. If you type in Baden Powell into the search field and press enter the first result is Nyeri. Having redirects to attractions will just make the automatic suggestions that come up in the search field as you type overloaded. If I type in Baden in to a web site about destinations I expect to get suggested spar towns in Germany. As for "Visual art", singular rather plural, that is not needed. As soon as you start typing the word "visual" the suggestion of "Visual arts" comes up. I think these redirects are out of scope. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:35, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Those are all valid arguments, but I think they should be raised in a VFD. Speedy deletion is meant for obvious cases. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:07, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rollbacks[edit]

@Traveler100:, the rollback you did for Poimap2 is a bit heavy handed. I was doing it as part of preplanned upgrade as discussed for months on the forum. If you think they shouldn't be done, or should be done differently, lets discuss it there. We are all working on improving wiki sites, and simple rollbacks "until it is better" are not very constructive. I will start a forum discussion, please participate and lets figure out a reasonable way forward. P.S. I should probably switch to user:Yurik (WMF), as this work is being done as part of the overall plan by WMF, not only my personal initiative. And clearly I would like to collaborate with you on the improvements, rather than have conflicts and undo wars. --Yurik (talk) 13:21, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I undid {{PoiMap2detail}} where is this months long discussion been taking place? --Traveler100 (talk) 13:26, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies, I meant the Geo template change. Poimap2detail will obviously also need to be addressed. By month long discussion I mean the long conversation taking place in many parts of the Travellers' pub about our stable map roll out. Also, I just saw that you have commented on the pub's page -- thanks for posting your concerns - I only saw the rollback when I wrote the above, not the pub's comments. I hope we can quickly resolve absolute blockers, and start moving forward on the feature requests. --Yurik (talk) 13:34, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Let me know if you want to discuss any of the concerns over a video chat - frequently misunderstandings can be easily resolved with a quick Hangout. thx! --Yurik (talk) 13:37, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The main conversation started 17 May 2016 on Travellers' pub, that is not a long ago for this site. Remember this is a travel site many of the contributors are on the move, often busy in the physical not the virtual world, I myself and others sometimes in places without internet access. Give people a chance to comment. Now please do not misunderstand me I am all for improvements and enhancements on this site, but although I see a few small advantages to what has done so far, I see more loss in functionality that is used by people on this site. Keep working on the new map format but please do not introduce until it at least covers the functionality of the current one. This sort of centralist pushing is what discouraged me and others away from major editing of Wikipedia, please do not start that regime here, I enjoy contributing this this site at the moment and really would prefer not to work on the WikiTravel with all its advertising banners. --Traveler100 (talk) 13:46, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
no, we wouldn't want to have banners here :) Re centralist push - I agree, there is a bit of that - mostly because we are still in violation of our privacy policy, hence the rush - per privacy policy, we basically cannot serve any content from any non-WMF sites (including wmflabs) unless the user is aware that their information is being exposed. You or I might be ok with that, but some users have big concerns (sometimes well founded) about their privacy and even physical safety. Switching to WMF-generated tiles was the most critical first step, and now removing wmflabs from the loop should complete this. Content from wmflabs or external sites is still accessible, but only after giving an "external data source" warning (once you click ok, it remembers it, so it won't nag you each time). I think maps are critical to the wiki content, and Wikivoyage has a huge need of it, but the initial introduction of maps was not coordinated well, and as the result, caused this urgency. So lets try to close the loopholes, and lets innovate as quickly as we possibly can. I will start a list of must have vs nice to have functionality - noone wants to regress on the features. Thanks! P.S. I am very surprised by the inability to insert multiple maps - could you give me an example of that on a test page? New maps can be inserted as many times as you want, and they can either (partially) share data or have completely independent set of data shown. --Yurik (talk) 14:20, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Multi mapframe test at Traveler100/sandbox-TCH. Feel free to edit. --Traveler100 (talk) 14:41, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thx, investigating. Also, I added blockers section, please expand. And lastly, sent you a PM. thx! --Yurik (talk) 14:53, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Done, and fixed in prod. --Yurik (talk) 15:32, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
that was quick. Thanks. Now need to work out how to get the GPX route plots onto the map and the POI icon symbols and can consider removing the other methods on itineraries. --Traveler100 (talk) 16:03, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Merge tags[edit]

Quick request - when you add a merge tag to an article (Special:Diff/2982538/3080720) can you be sure to explain why you think a merge should be done - {{merge|target|reason for merge}}? The talk page for that article already contains an argument against a merge, so it's not clear what has changed that now makes a merge the right solution, or whether you are merely suggesting that a merge be re-considered. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:07, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

I actually disagree with this advice on redirects - if the redirect does no harm I don't see any reason to dissuade someone from creating a redirect using Wikipedia naming format. I don't think there is a policy against such redirects, but let me know if there was a discussion I missed. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:29, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bo'ness[edit]

Hi, I saw you moved Bo'ness from Sterlingshire to the Lothians and was curious why. Bo'ness is in the Falkirk council area, which we've always included within our Sterlingshire region. I'm not fussed either way, but just wanted to confirm before I edit the map. -Shaundd (talk) 07:23, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake. The breadcrumb was set to Lothians before I changed the page, but after checking I see the town was but is no longer in West Lothian. --Traveler100 (talk) 10:30, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Betws-y-Coed[edit]

Hi. I did try to do a move first, but the new page was already set up as a redirect to the old one, so copy and paste was the only way I could do it. Anyway, thanks for fixing with your admin skills, now to reinstate the hyphens in the prose... --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 01:15, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hatsukaichi[edit]

Hi Traveler100!

I am trying to interpret your revert at Miyajima (not that I contest it, actually I don't really care either way, I only edited it because I thought it was an honest mistake).

Do you maybe mean that Hatsukaichi is not about this city (which includes Miyajima) but about the smaller settlement centered around the Hatsukaichi town hall?

In that case, I guess Hatsukaichi contains irrelevant listings that should be deleted?

Cheers! Syced (talk) 03:11, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My thinking is that although Itsukushima is administratively part of the city of Hatsukaichi, as far as a travel guide is concerned is should be regarded as separate. The alternative would be to merge the city and island articles into one, seeing as there is little information in the city article. --Traveler100 (talk) 03:16, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can the regionstats tool / template be adapted for airports?[edit]

Hi.

I presume it was you who created the template used e.g. at WV:Germany Expedition to track which articles have and lack which listings. Could something similar be done for airport articles? I am currently trying to get a discussion on policy going and while I fear it'll go nowhere, it would be good to have this tool if eat and sleep listings remain the guiding principle by which airport articles are judged. Hobbitschuster (talk) 13:49, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting a rollback of the Telstra Vandal[edit]

Please don't revert rollbacks of the Telstra Vandal. That's what they want. Hobbitschuster (talk) 16:30, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But if the specific edit was a good one, in this case fixing a typo of mine, surly it should be kept? Not just blindly undoing all edits of someone you suspect being a Vandal. --Traveler100 (talk) 17:22, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Measurements[edit]

Hey T100, thanks again for the conversion templates you created. I use them a lot. Would you be able to create hectares/acres templates? Those would be quite useful. Cheers. Ground Zero (talk) 15:32, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Ground Zero: : done

Hello There. I am wondering whether it makes sense to put a specific date on this event rather than the general time frame. When I edited the article, it showed the 2015 date, which tells me that the article is not updated often enough to keep it current. Putting in the 2017 date will make the article outdated in just a few months. Ground Zero (talk) 12:57, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The event listing with a specific data has a couple of advantages. Firstly it is very useful to the reader if up to date, secondly it gets better search engine hits. If it is a year or two out of date then at least it is confirmation that the event took place recently rather than some on this site that haven't taken place for over a decade. Also the idea with the event template was to encourage people to update regularly, which also ups the ranking of the page in search engines. --Traveler100 (talk) 14:11, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this explanation. I guess time will tell whether this approach succeeds, or just makes the project look dated. I have my doubts, but it is worth experimenting with new approaches. Ground Zero (talk) 22:47, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at merging this into the main UK article, as you proposed, but there was too much on cycling there already, so I decided to shift content the other way. I think that makes the cycling article substantial enough to stand on its own. Ground Zero (talk) 19:28, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

When you make a redirect, you don't need made an edit summery.[edit]

I noticed you created a redirect, and made the edit summary "redirect". If you just want to say you're making a redirect, you don't need to bother with an edit summary. ACT[edit]

Hi, Traveler100, and thanks for being so diligent with the airport code redirects, but ACT is Australian Capital Territory. See Talk:ACT. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:31, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Waco, Texas is a reasonably well know location, but I see your point, I have made it a disambig page. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:37, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Canberra is by far better known around the world. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:54, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I agree Canbarra is but outside Australia how well know is ACT, how many non Australians think of typing ACT is they were thinking of going to Canberra. Also once we start going down that road, a lot of disambig pages would go into debate. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:56, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I knew the abbreviation. It's more or less like asking how many people know abbreviations like DC for District of Columbia. And now you have a redirect for BBQ? BBQ is barbecue. We really can't have a redirect based on some obscure airport code that spells out the most common abbreviation for barbecue. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:05, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But there was nothing in the Campfire article about Barbecues and really what does the food cooking method have to do with travelling. I guess could also make it a disabig page but then should redirect to Street food or some other page. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:09, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should keep in mind that with some notable exceptions (including LAX, SFO and JFK in the US), airport codes aren't all that well known, and even more so when you're dealing with relatively little-known cities. There are actually quite a few articles about cuisine on this site, and I could easily imagine a Barbecue itinerary in any of several places: We could have one in Texas, one in the Carolinas, one in Tennessee, one in the Kansas City area, for example, as to my knowledge, the best known styles of American barbecue are Texas-style, Carolina-style, Memphis-style and Kansas City-style. I don't think "barbecue" is an unlikely search term, and a lot of people might search for that either as "barbeque" or "BBQ" (possibly even "bar-be-Q" or "bar-be-que"). Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:25, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We could be there are not any at the moment. Once there are such article can create a diambig page for BBQ. Note this is not about people typing in an airport code (although I have done that while sitting in an airport) but about articles referencing airports on other pages through the {{IATA}} template. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:29, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Codrington is hardly a well-known place, though. I've been a geography buff since I was 6, and I don't remember ever having heard of this town. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:54, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Traveler100: Not sure if this is what you're asking but there is no programmatic way to make redirects: they are just made spontaneously by users who happen to think of them. Kutai National Park redirect[edit]

When you redirected Kutai National Park, did you mean to remove the {{vfd}} template? Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 06:58, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

yes I did, I think the redirect solves the problem of an empty article. If the information in the listing gets large enough then the article could be started again. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:39, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The redirect itself looks fine to me. But the page\redirect is sill at VFD, so why remove the template? Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 06:04, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dalian districts[edit]

SEN[edit]

Sen in Malaysia are 100 to the ringgit (in effect, sen=cent[s]). Sen is also short for Senator, but I'm not sure where that would be applicable (do the Ottawa Senatora hockey team use it?) Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:47, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Should not be a problem even if we create a currency parameter. Also can distinguish between upper and lower case. In case of another total uppercase then can create a disambiguous page. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:04, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Marker or Listing Template in "Get in" Section?[edit]

Hi there, is there a general policy whether to use the "marker" or "listing" template for airports and train stations in the "Get in" section? So far, I used the "marker" listing, since airports and train stations are generally mentioned in paragraphs (and therefore floating texts) and not in listings (with bullet points). However, I now see that you make changes (for example this or this) that turn markers into listings. You include the first paragraph about for example an airport in the "content" parameter of the listing template, but leave remaining parts excluded. This doesn't seem optimal. Thanks for your answer. Xsobev (talk) 17:35, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No general policy but I am changing markers to listings on city pages where there is an airport (but not on other pages referencing the same airport). Doing it so can add a few extra parameters and to be consistent. --Traveler100 (talk) 17:42, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is no problem using listings in that way, but then the text should be divided between the listing and the surrounding paragraphs in some logical manner. I moved the content and part of the "directions" out of the listing in Malmö, and reworded a little. --LPfi (talk) 18:57, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for you answers. Rather than changing currently used marker templates to listings (with added bullet points), the parameters that you seem to be missing should simply be added to the marker template. A suggestion/comment was already left here: Wikivoyage:Travellers'_pub#Question about Template:Marker, but wasn't followed up by anyone. Creating a bullet point listing within several paragraphs about an airport or train station just interrupts the natural flow of the text, especially when divided up more or less randomly between content that is part of the listing and content that is not. I agree that the style used should be consistent across the site, but to be consistent, a generally agreed policy needs to exist that everyone can follow.
Also, according to the documentation of the marker template, it is especially in longer spans of text, where it should be used: "This template automatically numbers listings ... and is typically used in-line in the prose of articles." (see Template:Marker).
Xsobev (talk) 22:24, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I welcome improvements to what I did. Maybe should understand what I am trying to do long term, which is to make it clear which article is the main article for small and medium sided airports. Here I think listing are better, particularly once you start adding thinks like phone numbers. I think marker should stay as is so that it does stay as something that fits into prose without breaking the flow. --Traveler100 (talk) 05:47, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes: if you want the listing to stand out, then having it not interrupt the prose is not an important consideration. An airport bullet point is not much different from the tourist office listing in Understand. But the alt, directions and content parameters should not be used for explanations that fit nicely in the following paragraphs. What do you think about the format now used in Malmö#Malmö Airport? --LPfi (talk) 07:40, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
yes that is better --Traveler100 (talk) 08:16, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi and thanks again for your explanations. I wasn't aware of the steps mentioned on small and medium sized airports. Now I understand the changes you made, and I guess these steps have been decided collectively. I personally don't find this ideal, since so far the listing template was used to provide a self-contained piece of information about a place. The way how it is intended to be used for small- and medium-sized airports separates some information about the airport (for example, directions, iata code, etc.) in the listing from the rest of the information (for example, how to get to the city center, which airlines fly to the airport) outside of the listing. (This is also the difference to a tourist office listing, which is completely self-contained, and therefore ok in my view).
Regarding the example in Malmö, I personally don't like it, but it seems to be according to the Airport Expedition policy. Also, does this policy mean that the "content" parameter for these kinds of listings will never be used? If yes, that could be added to the policy, or alternatively a new "go" listings template could be added?
As a side-remark: When making changes to the marker or listing templates, please be careful not to leave sentences in an incoherent state (for example "The busiest airport in Scotland, . The airport offers ..." on this edit (already fixed) or "Łódź Władysław Reymont Airport (LCJ IATA) (It is in the Polesie district, approximately 6 km from the city center.). is one of the smallest airports in Poland. ..." in this edit). Xsobev (talk) 10:49, 25 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Because there is some advisory text on a Wikivoyage page please do not see this as strict policy, if you think there is a better way of doing things then give it a go. If others do not like it then it will be changed. --Traveler100 (talk) 11:14, 25 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for insights and advice[edit]

Thanks Traveler100! I am new here and I'll add itinerary template, and tone down the external links. Text is mine, not of other people, I'm the author of text and the Land art trail too. Thanks again. --Ursus44 (talk) 08:20, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question about itinerary categories[edit]

Hi Traveler100! Could you please explain why Category:Star itineraries, Category:Guide itineraries, and so on shouldn't be subcategories of Category:Itineraries, even though the corresponding categories for regions, cities, etc. are? What makes itineraries different from cities and regions and so on in this way? I don't understand your edit summary. —Granger (talk · contribs) 12:22, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Mx. Granger: hi. The categories are used to calculate Article status stats, particularly for the Maintenance panel. If these categories we added to the Itineraries category then each article would be in the category twice, once as it is in the main Itinerary category and once as it is in the status category, thus giving counts an incorrect value. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:09, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that makes sense. —Granger (talk · contribs) 10:28, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why "Minden (Weser)"?[edit]

Our rules on disambiguation are pretty clear, that Minden (Weser) is wrong. We should per those rules use the highest level of hierarchy unique to the destination. "Weser" however is no level of hierarchy and certainly not the highest unique to Minden. We might use Minden (North Rhine Westphalia) but I frankly don't understand what you're trying to do with Minden (Weser). Hobbitschuster (talk) 14:39, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

On its own website Minden doesn't use a Weser disambiguator, either. Unlike, say Rothenburg ob der Tauber Hobbitschuster (talk) 14:42, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Minden (Weser) was used at some time in the past, maybe on a region page, but I see your point. I think Minden (North Rhine Westphalia) would be the correct name. --Traveler100 (talk) 14:57, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Which other Minden are likely to have an article on in Germany? And does the "by far the best known of the name" also apply within a country? i.e. there not being any other Minden of note in Germany? Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:07, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

NYC redirect[edit]

I have to demur fairly strenuously on this one. NYC needs to redirect to New York City, not merely New York City#By plane. What you're doing is roughly equivalent to redirecting L.A. to Los Angeles#By plane. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:49, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I was not thinking of it from an American's view point, I suppose the abbreviation is used for the city. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:19, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, very commonly. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:11, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for changing the redirect. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:14, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mülheim - Ruhr[edit]

Given that this article was created as a copvyo and currently contains no non-trivial content, would it be better to temporarily delete it and then create it again as a skeleton? Hobbitschuster (talk) 18:03, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just asking: What is the Geo-Coding[edit]

I noticed that on Narsaq you added information. So I can do it on my own in future, what did you do? SelfieCity (talk) 15:08, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

adding the coordinates to the {{geo}} template on the page so that the map icon (top right) takes you to a map of the area. Looks like you understand the mapframe and coords in listings so should not be an issue, but if interested take a look at this months cotm. --Traveler100 (talk) 16:54, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merges of New England townships[edit]

Please read Talk:East Matunuck#Merge tags. The short version is that in New England, townships are sub-counties and commonly (but not always) contain two or more distinct villages that may merit their own articles. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:48, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Articles started by the Telstra vandal[edit]

You think we should start officially enabling him? Why shouldn't Menzel Bourguiba be deleted? Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:08, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A valid location with population of over 50,000. Why delete. What evidence is there this is a vandal? --Traveler100 (talk) 13:08, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Delete and recreate if need be, but do not validate the Vandal. Hobbitschuster (talk) 13:12, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is valid data vandalism? Could this be filtering of users/locations? If a vandal best just to ignore the edits if they are not incorrect. --Traveler100 (talk) 13:14, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That isn't the procedure we've been following, which is to revert every edit by this individual so as to discourage him. You've resisted the procedure pretty consistently, I think. However, it would be nice to point to a place where this was agreed upon, and I'm drawing a blank. Andrewssi2 or AndreCarrotflower, might you be able to help in that regard? Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:45, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Should at least document the talk page with IP addresses of the user and other proof that this is an unwanted contributor. --Traveler100 (talk) 15:21, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The 'proof' is that it was started by somebody called User:NightTraveller2183 with the exact same style of user contributions as every other iteration of this person, i.e. that they create an article with the bare minimum of info then move on to another disposable account to inflict their rubbish somewhere else, leaving the article empty. I don't see why you or anyone else should have to waste their time improving such an article, and I don't think we should do anything to encourage any more Telstra edits than we already have to endure. Never have I seen a greater waste of time among so many regulars and admins than all the people who have to deal with this individual. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:30, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Enough of this nonsense. The Telstra vandalism has been going on long enough, and has a high enough profile among the goings-on of this site, that any admin who pleads ignorance is either being insincere or should rethink whether he really wants to be an admin. Nobody but Traveler100 seriously disputes that the Telstra user is a vandal, or seriously disputes what kind of edits and usernames are involved. If Traveler100 isn't going to help combat this vandalism like an administrator should, the least he can do is stay out of the way of those who are doing that work. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 15:32, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I realise this is not a legal court but I think there should be some proof and justification stated with such edits. Apparently it is fine to create an empty page of some hamlet in the USA but not an article of a town of 50,000 in Africa with some restaurants. Even if this is the same user, then is it correct to judge guilt on a person based on previous offences, punishment yes but a specific action? Is it not Admins task to ask if things are being done correctly? --Traveler100 (talk) 15:47, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's an admin's task to accept that those questions have already been asked and answered, even if he doesn't like the answers. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 15:49, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If and when Telstra ever decides to change their behaviour, and start by opening a dialogue apologising for their disruptive actions over several years and discussing how they're going to make amends, I would be the first to advocate a change in policy towards them. Until then... --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:58, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, Traveler100, I find it objectionable that you'd imply geographic discrimination here. No-one is opposed to an article about any African city. If you think that's the issue here, then at best, you're really not getting it at all. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:17, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Every admin (and contributor) here is completely entitled to their opinion, and that opinion does not have to agree with consensus at all. It is disturbing however that consensus is apparently being ignored just because it doesn't conveniently suit one's own position. Andrewssi2 (talk) 23:57, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK I will accept consensus on this particular contributor, I can see he/she is annoying. I was not against this targetting of a particular person but asking for documented proof so that other new users were not incorrectly discouraged from contributing.--Traveler100 (talk) 06:12, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I completely agree. There have been 'false positives' in the past, and we certainly want to err on the side of caution. I don't want to discourage a real contributor at all. I think we are however able to spot a Telstra edit a mile off by now. Andrewssi2 (talk) 22:06, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merges[edit]

Side note to explain why some attention on my activities. The over-typical number of merges in the last month were due to two things. The December Collaboration of the Month was to go through more than 1200 articles with no geo tag. Most of these were obscure long ignored articles, some of attractions not articles, some with different spelling of duplicate location, some small hamlets with not attractions next to larger locations and some were areas overlapping other region or city article. The other reason was that last month was the start of the WV Expeditions on districts. First task was correcting the over 50 city articles that had articles below them in the breadcrumb hierarchy but were not huge cities, not that many of them were districts of huge cities, a proportion of these were also merged. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:09, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

listing|type=go[edit]

I'm curious to know what this does as I have been using the listing template for "Getting In" listings. I couldn't find an explanation in WV:listings. Ground Zero (talk) 18:45, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Because it creates a specific icon on maps, a red suitcase, as opposed to the generic green square. --Traveler100 (talk) 18:48, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks. Maybe we should add this to WV:listings. Ground Zero (talk) 18:53, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
But for some reason just putting "go" there like one could do for "see" or "do" listings borks up the listing editor... Hobbitschuster (talk) 19:48, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes need to look at fixing that. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:20, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please eliminate touting when you have the chance[edit]

For example, here. It's great that you're fixing phone format, but it's kind of a waste of time to do that when a listing is obviously a tout that needs to be reverted. It feels like I very often follow up on one of your edits to revert a touty listing, so if you can save me (and others) some work, that would be great. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:23, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Another example. I'd like it if you would give a glance at the content of listings to see if they're in the first person or otherwise obviously touty, before you spend time editing their format. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:00, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good afternoon! Here's an example from today. I'd be happy to discuss how that's a promotional listing, if you like. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:01, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia to RelatedWikipedia[edit]

Hi there

I noticed you have probably run a lot of conversions of the above mentioned. However, I still have showing Wikipedia twice now on the left side of link lists, see Yerevan. Once under "In other projects" and once under "Related sites". Shouldn't we reduce this to just one Wikipedia link altogether?

Cheers, Ceever (talk) 01:34, 27 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that is the next step. What has been done so far is change the syntax so it will be easier to make the change. I plan to make a small change to the template so if duplicate references only one will be change. I want to analyses the data first to see if can removed different text entries which redirects to same page. Waiting a few days as I am traveling at the moment with only occasionally a good internet connection. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:30, 27 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Sarbast.T.Hameed: I did not delete your user page, User:Sarbast.T.Hameed, but a main space page of your name, Sarbast.T.Hameed. I assumed this was done by mistake and as was duplicate the user space page no need to copy any text over. --Traveler100 (talk) 17:44, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Kulai[edit]

Hi, regarding the Kulai railway station at "Kulai" Wikivoyage article. I've been literally and physically been there to see the station, and what I could say is that the station is no longer in used. No people waiting for train, no ticket counter, no cars parking nearby to wait for the train. Only the old shelter was left at the station. It has not been used anymore for quite sometimes from what I saw. Chongkian (talk) 00:51, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have no personal knowledge of the location, was only going off Wikipedia. Thanks for the correction. May be good to note that in the article. --Traveler100 (talk) 05:25, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate content[edit]

Hi there. I reversed some of your deletions in the Hardanger article. I dont think duplication is a problem, major sights can be listed in higher level articles. Without these sights the Hardanger article will not make much sense. And: Hardanger bridge is not in Kinsarvik, it actually sits in 3 districts: Ullensvang, Ulvik and Eidfjord. --Erik den yngre (talk) 19:30, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sognefjorden[edit]

I also disagree on your suggestion to move content fra Sognefjorden. There are only small villages in the Sognefjord area so there is not enough content for each village (about 30,000 people live in the area), and from the travellers perspective it is much more informative to list the highlights in the Sognefjord article. --Erik den yngre (talk) 19:59, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Was not aware of the full impact of this IP address range. Strikethrough Text[edit]

Is there a way to make strikethrough text like this example without using HTML and using one of Wikivoyage's editing features? I saw on the Wikivoyage:Manual of style page and more specifically on the Wikivoyage:Avoid HTML page that we aren't supposed use HTML so I don't want to add something that is frowned upon without discussing it. I don't wish to use it widely, I simply want to cross out things on my editing to do list on my user page rather than delete them until I am completely finished with the page or project that I am working on. BrysonH44 (talk) 17:51, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not aware of any other way of doing this. I do not think any one would object to you using it on a talk page though. It is also used in internal Wikivoyage pages like Wikivoyage:Destination of the month candidates. It would be frowned upon though on an article page. --Traveler100 (talk) 18:14, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Related sites - removal of template when the same[edit]

Swept in from the pub

You may or may not have notices that if the Related site link is the same as the In other projects then it is not displayed anymore in the sidebar. Before I execute the next step, just want a check with the group. In these cases were {{RelatedWikipedia}} or {{RelatedCommonsCat}} or {{RelatedCommons}} matches the Wikidata entry the template will be removed from the article. As of writing Category:Articles with Related Wikipedia same as Wikidata is 22169 articles, Category:Articles with Related Commons category same as Wikidata is 7826 articles and Category:Articles with Related Commons page same as Wikidata is 2000 articles. If no objections, and some confirmation of support, then I will run a bot to remove the templates from these articles. --Traveler100 (talk) 13:33, 28 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Categories for formerly featured articles?[edit]

Hi!

I'm asking you this question, because you seem to be familiar with categories. Do you know if there is some hidden category with articles that have previously been featured as DotM, OtBP or FTT (ie. have the parameter in the pagebanner set to "dotm=yes" as shown by the green or orange icon)? If there is, it'd be useful when using Petscan to search for guide articles to nominate for the Main Page. --ϒpsilon (talk) 15:44, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Afghanistan[edit]

In case you're wondering, no, I am not reorganizing the regions of Afghanistan. I'm just adding articles with specific info on different parts of the regions, as the security situation in, say, Herat, will be very different from that of Maimana, even though they're roughly in the same wikivoyage-defined region of Afghanistan.

Then maybe think about adding to the existing pages and making the text clear which parts are more dangourous. It is not uncommon for travellers to start in a relatively safe area then wonder into a more dangerous one.--Traveler100 (talk) 19:43, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Warning about a user[edit]

Don't worry, it's nothing you've done, but we need to deal with Libertarianmoderate, who created a page called The Great Satan and redirected it to a competitor—WT. After the discussion in the Pub a few days ago, I know this is a serious issue and I think this is vandalism or near-vandalism.

So far, Libertarianmoderate hasn't been acting like a vandal, but this recent redirect creation was different. Maybe Libertarianmoderate should be blocked if he doesn't listen. Selfie City (talk) 20:46, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I haven't yet brought up the issue to him on the talk page because I think a more experienced user than me should deal with this issue. Selfie City (talk) 20:49, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

French Empire[edit]

Aroma Park

Libertarianmoderate (talk) 20:31, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Libertarianmoderate - Although the "sleep test" is commonly misinterpreted to say that a town must have a hotel or some other sort of accommodation to be a valid article, that's not what it's about at all. All it is meant to do, and all it was ever meant to do, is to help editors determine what types of places get their own articles. For instance, the Smithsonian Institution wouldn't get its own article, even though it's one of the most famous museums in the world, because a museum isn't the type of place a person would expect to spend the night. However, cities and towns are the types of places where you might expect to find hotels, so - regardless of whether a given city or town actually has any - they are always valid subjects for articles, as long as there's something there that can be listed in "See" or "Do". -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 20:42, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See Buffalo/West Side, which has no hotels but a lot of attractions and activities. Would anyone say this isn't a valid article? I don't think so. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 04:29, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looks more in the right direction. As pointed out does not always need sleep entry but is a good rule. Was concerned about lists of historical colonies and locations with less than 100 inhabitants near other towns that have articles. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:45, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

kms to km bot[edit]

Thank you for setting up the bot to take care of this. Please have a coffee on me. Ground Zero (talk) 21:15, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm confused[edit]

I noticed that you've been typing messages like "Cannot sleep?" on Telstra user talk pages, and then Libertarianmoderate added the Telstra message. Is this a new way of dealing with Telstra? If so, sorry for bothering you. Selfie City (talk) 23:01, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Here's another example: [7]; again, seems like an odd way to deal with Telstra edits, if they are Telstra. Selfie City (talk) 23:06, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I dont know anything about the weird messages, but is it against the rules for me to add the telstra box? Libertarianmoderate (talk) 23:10, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. Just that normally adding the Telstra boxes is what admins do. (By admins, I mean people like AndreCarrotflower and Ikan Kekek.) Selfie City (talk) 23:13, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody should be adding the Telstra box who doesn't know what they're doing. Let the admins handle it. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 23:15, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, got it. Libertarianmoderate (talk) 23:31, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe my original comment was not specific enough, since I wasn't really asking what Libertarianmoderate was doing. My question was about what Traveler100 was doing. That's why I posted here. Selfie City (talk) 00:07, 21 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

IATA codes for airports in Nicaragua not MGA IATA[edit]

Thank you for your edit to Bilwi. However, I fear that this is largely a lateral move as I could not find any website, not even ITA Matrix that actually gives results when fed in those IATA codes. Maybe it is because La Costeña doesn't have its flights on the things or it is for some other reason, but the IATA codes are of rather limited use for travelers in that case... Articles Geo different to Wikidata[edit]

I've added an option in the Geo template to show the coordinate differences when an article is added to the Articles Geo different to Wikidata category if you have the ErrorHighlighter gadget enabled. I've left the sytling the same as those for phone errors at the moment but maybe doesn't need to be quite as bright since it is a bigger box. WOSlinker (talk) 08:07, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@WOSlinker: cool. thanks --Traveler100 (talk) 19:18, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@WOSlinker: proving very useful, now for a difficult one (at least for my knowledge of wikidata). Sometimes there is a "applies to part" coordinate which is being picked first. For example Appalachian Mountains, d:Q93332.--Traveler100 (talk) 08:30, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Traveler100: You can change the ranking of each item when there is more than one set of coordinates. So I swapped over the preferred rank to the general coordinate and it's now ok. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:32, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That fixed it. Is the ranking changed in Wikidata? How do you do that? --Traveler100 (talk) 10:39, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, on Wikidata, you need to edit the coords and then click on those arrow-like icons and select the rank. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:21, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why delete "places to visit" redirect?[edit]

I can imagine someone typing that into the search bar. Also, I was wondering that maybe you were deleting a lot of other redirects and accidentally deleted this one as well. Selfie City (talk) 16:20, 12 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Melbourne districts[edit]

I noticed that you were working on the Melbourne districts, and they definitely need the work. However, considering the main article’s static map and the number of districts, there seems to be a very straightforward merge possible, which I mentioned at Talk:Melbourne. I was thinking about plunging forward if there were no objections but it’s too big a project. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 14:35, 8 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Travellers with Asperger's and autism[edit]

Hello. I don't think you should have deleted that without a vfd discussion, as I for one would have voted to keep. Poor articles, when they cover a useful travel topic, should be allowed to be expanded. What do you think? --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:08, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I felt this was a special case. A suspect source giving medical advice I did not think was advisable to keep live on the site.--Traveler100 (talk) 09:36, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, but isn't that true of any of the other pages under Stay healthy? Few (or more likely none) are written by qualified medical professionals. What makes this page a special case, aside from its short and undeveloped state? Given this Wikipedia essay, it may not be too hard to find Wikivoyagers with a decent knowledge of the needs of autistic travellers who could contribute to make that a much better article.--ThunderingTyphoons! Traveller's Rant..[edit]

Did you intend also to have a section for the "Tour guides say the funniest things"?

I've had tour guides here in the UK , make amusing jokes about American tourists for example, or make a comment about taking pictures anywhere in the "museum" only to quickly add an exception you would have thought was common sense to the travelers concerned. On another instance I heard the story of the tour guide at some "industrial museum" that gave his tour party an unexpected history (mostly left-leaning) of inter-war "industrial relations". :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:59, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

alt tabs[edit]

Hi, and thanks so much for all your housekeeping copy edits! One further thing you could do if you so choose is to delete anything in "alt" that is not a real alternate name. I so often follow up on your edits by deleting something that's merely a shortening of the official name. That really is not an alternate name. Alternate names are the names of attractions in the local language or the former name of a business or building or whatever, that some people still use to refer to it. Spambots[edit]

Hi. I think that since you're an admin, it would be a good idea to summarily perma-block accounts whose first edits are obvious spambot content and irrelevant to a travel guide by any definition. I'm following up after you, deleting your touting warning and perma-blocking such accounts. I could understand giving a tour company spammer another chance, but not these irrelevant companies. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:45, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just more willing to give people a second chance that other people. If I see a repeat I will block longer. Effort is not great. The bots I did block straight away as indefinite, the manual advertising edits I gave warning. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:47, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
How did you determine that User:Erpcompanies wasn't a spambot? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:02, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well cannot always be sure, but for the edits that were on random main space articles in random positions I blocked indefinite straight away but the others were edits to their own userspace, did not think that should be handled so strictly. Only actually blocked when a second user had similar type of edit. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:44, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Whats wrong with my edits? I'm Athenian and i know the region. For example Vari-voula-vouliagmeni is a municipality in east attica regional unit and part of athens urban area, isn't outside of the city. And sorry for my english.--2A02:587:441B:DB76:7D80:68F:A5E4:6A6C 20:54, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikivoyage is structured by what makes sense for visitors which is not always by political administrative structures. In the case of Vari-voula-vouliagmeni it is far enough out of the city to be regarded as a separate destination. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:58, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't out of the city, it is false, And the article contains glyfada which isn't part of this municipality.--2A02:587:441B:DB76:7D80:68F:A5E4:6A6C 21:08, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Best to bring this discussion up on the article talk page so other can see it. Question to ask is how long does it take to drive from centre of Athens to the points of interest in this article? Does it make sense to merge Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni into Athens? --Traveler100 (talk) 21:14, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think is false the section go next: Athens. It is part of the city like alimos, ellhniko, glyfada etc--2A02:587:441B:DB76:7D80:68F:A5E4:6A6C 21:19, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In this section i think the best is agia marina, anavissos, saronida, lagonissi, palaia fokaia, sounio etc--2A02:587:441B:DB76:7D80:68F:A5E4:6A6C 21:24, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Baby out with the bathwater?[edit]

Is this a baby to you, or do you plan to laboriously edit out all the touting on behalf of a touter that doesn't need our help? Really, this is textbook touting:

With its rich interiors, luxurious furnishings, imported wooden flooring, balconies facing the valley and snow clad mountains. Offers 75 well appointed rooms that are categorised as Deluxe, Super Deluxe, Luxury & Luxury Family Suite for your indulgence. The room are furnished with 32" LED with Satellite TV, refrigerators, wooden flooring with private balconies giving you the charming view of Himalayan beauty. DiscoTheque with Bar, Multi Cuisine Silhouette restaurant are there to serve you with mouth watering delicacies & drinks all the time

Gimme a break! I feel like you have been routinely letting touting get by, only for me to follow you to a page and see a listing that is really inadmissible. What do you plan to do with this one? Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:23, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As stated in my original edit, was not finished. Agree original was too much touting but was some information of worth added. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:27, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, if you think it's really worth taking your time to get out all of the touting. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:54, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Is this what you consider the detouted version, or do you plan on getting rid of the rest of the touting? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:55, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Was not planning on any more edits with that entry. --Traveler100 (talk) 10:02, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[unindent] Well then let's please look at it, because you have a very different conception of "detouting" than I do. Here's what's still there:

3 Star hotel, built in a very contemporary style. Offers 75 well appointed rooms with luxurious furnishings, imported wooden flooring, balconies facing the valley and snow clad mountains. The room are furnished with 32" LED with Satellite TV, refrigerators. DiscoTheque with Bar, Multi Cuisine Silhouette restaurant.

I would still call that a tout.

Here's a detouted version:

"3-star hotel with 75 rooms. The hotel uses imported wooden flooring and has balconies that face the valley and snow-clad mountains. The rooms are furnished with 32" LEDs with satellite TV and refrigerators. The hotel also has a discotheque with a bar, and a multi-cuisine restaurant called Silhouette."

Do you see what's gone? First, there was a lot of unnecessary capitalization. Second, "very contemporary style" is not a clear description but sounds touty, so best to remove it. "Well appointed" is on words to avoid for a good reason, as is "luxurious". I don't think these are minor points, especially when they're all together in a space of 3 sentences. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:27, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Some good points, have changed. But have to agree that is more useful than just deleting. --Traveler100 (talk) 11:08, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not necessarily. There were already a fair number of "Sleep" listings in the Manali article, and since this one was contributed by a touter, we might have trouble finding out whether it's actually worth listing at all. That said, if you prefer to detout a listing, that's fine, if you genuinely detout it. I prefer not to spend my time doing that unless there really isn't a sufficient number of listings already. I've edited it to be navigable and so that subcategories are alphabetically sorted. Surely this is better, don't you agree? —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:25, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What I was doing was removing topic categories from destination categories so bots doing processing of destination articles do not perform anything on a travel topic article. Basically all categories on Wikivoyage are controlled by templates so should be no reason to add any manually. Do not think it caused any major issues, just make sure nothing can go wrong. --Traveler100 (talk) 18:03, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Koavf:, could you revert the adding of travel topic categories to destination categories? --Traveler100 (talk) 18:05, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Delistifying Goa[edit]

Hi, and thanks as always for being helpful, but please do not listify Goa. State articles should be emptied of specific templated listings, not refilled with them. If you'd like to help more in that article, please move such listings to city or park articles, though I suspect they're already there, and substitute prose summaries (only) where appropriate. I remember laboriously ridding that article of listings some years ago. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:07, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes this article needs some attention. What I was planning on doing was to listify the POIs then work out where to move them too. It is not that a region article should not have listings but it should not of POIs that should be in listings. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:19, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest you look at relevant city articles, which are likely to have the same listings, whereupon the duplicates can be deleted. And what do you mean about listings being ok in a region article? Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:29, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Traveler100 and I had a discussion where I explained my view that the current policy does not prohibit using listings templates. This is why we should make that clear as a policy since it is what some long-term editors believe is meant. Ground Zero (talk) 10:55, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I had formatted the entries to correct a few things. Realize should be moved but was not clear initially where too. Undoing just means will have to fix again when the are moved. Should I create a town article just for a bookshop or delete the entries? --Traveler100 (talk) 13:39, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There was a discussion about this Here, but it did not really resolve anything. I would move listings to the city articles that exist. If a POI does not belong in any city article, move it to the nearest city and put it in a "Nearby" subsection. Ground Zero (talk) 13:52, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Or the city article in question can mention in its lede or "Understand" section that it also covers the nearby city of X. It's especially important to draw a hard line against detailed, templated listings in an article like Goa, where listings get re-added over and over again. If you look through the article's history, you'll see that I did a big cleanup in 2014 and subsequently removed listings repeatedly, each time they were added. However, I can't do that work forever by myself, and we see what's happened to the article, again. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:47, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As you are knowledgeable in the technical aspects of templates, including their role in deletion nominations, I've come to you for the answer.

It is stated at Wikivoyage:Votes for deletion the following:

When deleting a template, consider first replacing it wherever it's been transcluded, especially if it served a formatting function. You can do this by adding "subst:" before the template name. Once that's done, you can delete the template without affecting individual uses of it.

Should that be done for Template:Itinerary, which I recently deleted? --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 19:56, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No it should show up as a red link in talk pages where it was discussed. Do a What links here on the now deleted page. Remove it from any main article pages. In case there is only one. --Traveler100 (talk) 05:25, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Could you protect Module:FastWikidata to allow changes only from autoconfirmed users? Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 22:08, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Andyrom75: I have changed your rights to template editor. Safer than giving too many people edit rights to a template used on most pages. Please test well before activating changes. Also if you add to an important template a call to a new template or module please change the new page's protection to template users only. Happy coding. --Traveler100 (talk) 05:48, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:08, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The convert template[edit]

I see you are replacing {{convert}} with the simpler templates. While those are good as they are easy to use, at least I have been using the former where I thought more control was needed, such as when giving the sigfig= parameter. It is of course a trade off, and an "about 20°C (68°F)" may be acceptable, but the "about 20°C (70°F)" is certainly better. Should one state so manually? One then loses the nowrap code (uggly if used explicitly), so is not ideal either.

Is there some discussion about these issues anywhere? I think there should be, both on some talk page and on a MoS page, linked from the template documentations.

--LPfi (talk) 16:33, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I do not think it possible to change all uses of convert to the simple form. There will always be special cases, like the ones you mention. I intend to leave those as is. --Traveler100 (talk) 16:41, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I noted some where the sigfig parameter was used (which is why I wrote), but it may very well be it was unnecessary in those cases. Documentation on best practices would still be welcome. --LPfi (talk) 17:15, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ListingEditor[edit]

Since no issue has been highlighted on the beta version on en:voy and on the the version in use on it:voy, could you move the beta into the version in use here in en:voy? (only admin and interface-admin can do it). Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 11:38, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Kind reminder. --Andyrom75 (talk) 12:51, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Andyrom75: sorry been traveling with a number of timezone changes last couple of weeks, did not feel could do a system change. Could you explain exactly what has changes and it which files? Make sure all files that need updating are done correctly.--Traveler100 (talk) 06:35, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Changes has been listed as usual in the main file (see "v2.3 Changes").
As specificed in MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition to update the ListingEditor gadget with the beta version script, you have to copy the content of just two files:
  1. MediaWiki:Gadget-ListingEditor2.js -> MediaWiki:Gadget-ListingEditor.js
  2. MediaWiki:Gadget-ListingEditor2.css -> MediaWiki:Gadget-ListingEditor.css
That's it :-) --Andyrom75 (talk) 22:33, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know if you need further details/support in order to perform the two changes. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 11:02, 28 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you feel not confortable on doing such change I can perform it, but I need to be a part of "interface admin" group (different from "admin" group). Please let me know. --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:18, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've made these changes for you. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:39, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks WOSlinker! --Andyrom75 (talk) 23:02, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I have only been able to get online for short bursts, did not think making such a change was good idea if not able to watch for a while. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:21, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All of us three has limited time, but since it has been already tested, moving the script into production it allows to get more feedback. During the development of v2.3 I've noticed that a couple of v2.2 wikidata features doesn't work properly, but I haven't got enough time to correct them. I'll work on them most likely in January. --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:25, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Traveler100 and WOSlinker. Please replace MediaWiki:Gadget-ListingEditor.js with User:Andyrom75/MediaWiki:Gadget-ListingEditor.js. As per comment, I've disabled the direction sync. Such modification has been already implemented and tested on it:voy. This close one of the two wikidata features that doesn't work. For the coords one I still need to understand how to avoid the failure during wikidata update. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 12:41, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:43, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Workaround for preview image problem[edit]

Hi. I'm trying out your 'Bitola' experiment for working around the Wikivoyage:UX Expedition#Improve Page previews problem by changing to "pagebanner/sandbox2" at Hamilton (New Zealand) ( to try to get rid of the image of African wild dogs at the zoo). I'm not seeing any change happening to the preview image. Should this work, or am I doing it wrong? thanks. Nurg (talk) 23:55, 25 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

File licenses[edit]

Which license(s) are File:WalesDOTMbanner02.jpg, File:WalesDOTMbanner03.jpg, and File:Rhineland-Palatinate rr4t.png licensed under? Thanks. GreenComputer (talk) 00:13, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey[edit]

Traveler100, it's been almost three months since you last logged in, when previously you were on almost daily. Is everything alright, mate? Even if you're taking a break from Wikivoyage right now, it would be good to hear from you, especially with everything going on in the world. Hope you're well, ThunderingTyphoons! How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Administrator status (Official Notice)[edit]

Thanks for your service as a Wikivoyage administrator. As you may be aware, our Wikivoyage:Administrators policy indicates that administrators who have not edited on the English Wikivoyage in over two years should have their administrator flags removed. This is for account security purposes, not a reflection of a loss of trust or any disappointment.

As such, we will be removing your administrator flag on February 16, 2022. Should you wish to retain your status, simply come on back and make an edit! That resets the clock. And if you ever decide to return to Wikivoyage as an active editor, your administrator flag can be restored by request.

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.

Your removal is along with several other admins as discussed here. This includes your bot account as well.

--SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 10:14, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your status has been changed to autopatroller. If you'd like to resume work as an admin any time, just let us know and we'll be happy to restore your admin flags. Either way, I hope you're having a wonderful life! Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:10, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
