I removed the following subsection since I don't think that it's specific to County Carlow. Perhaps it would be better at the country level?(WT-en) Maj 20:41, 26 December 2006 (EST)

Etiquette

[edit]

Only basic table manners are considered necessary when eating out, unless you're with company that has a more specific definition of what is appropriate. As a general rule, so long as you don't make a show of yourself by disturbing other diners there's little else to worry about. It's common to see other customers using their mobile phones - this sometimes attracts the odd frown or two but goes largely ignored. If you do need to take a call, keep it short and try not to raise your voice. The only other issue to be concerned about is noise - a baby crying might be forgivable if it's resolved fairly quickly, a contingent of adults laughing very loudly every couple of minutes or continuously talking out loud will attract negative attention. However, these rules are largely ignored in fast-food restuarants

Manual of style

[edit]

This is shaping up to be a really excellent guide! I think it could be a star... but our Project:Manual of style says that country information (ie tipping and etiquette like the above) should go in the country guide and listings (restaurants, hotels, etc) should go in the appropriate city guides. Let me know if there are any questions, otherwise we will all chip in to get the article in line with our policies. Thanks again! (WT-en) Maj 23:27, 26 December 2006 (EST)

Questions on Local Info & Photos

[edit]

Hello there! Sent you an e-mail, but the talk page would probably be the best place to discuss changes to the article. Again, thanks for all the good words, glad the work isn't going unnoticed!

Just a few things: The Etiquette is relevant to most of the country, so I've included it there. The Nationalist is a local newspaper, so is only relevant to Carlow. As for the photo, I'm unsure where the manual of style stands on photographs of newspapers, so I've no intention for the moment of putting it back in. Similarly, the radio stations that were mentioned were the ones that could be received in Carlow - most of them can't be heard across the country. Again, I'm not sure if they're considered appropriate, so I won't be putting them back in for the moment at least. If you could help me out I'd be most grateful.

Also, the photographs of the Fairgreen Shopping Centre and the one on the very bottom of shoppers on Grafton Street - they include people but they do show crowds... I presume they're OK being left in? The photo of the underpass on the relief road isn't the best - I'll be sure to change that over the coming weeks.

Thanks again for your help, and I'll be sure to keep adding information over the new year. (WT-en) Alan1989 14:26, 5 January 2007 (EST)

Listings

[edit]

This guide is looking great Alan! Just a note, all of the individual listings under sleep, eat and drink should only be in the respective city guides, not at the county level... just a sentence or three describing the options and the best areas/towns to stay, or anything that needs to be said in general about accomodation, etc in CC. Good work! (WT-en) - Cacahuate 19:23, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Re: Photo of Grafton Street..??

[edit]

I have removed the above mentioned image. I just didn't feel that that picture was really relevant. After all this is an article about County Carlow, I don't feel that a photo of Christmas shoppers dozens of miles away in Dublin is relevant at all..! Other than that it really is a good article.--(WT-en) Disonyxiated 23:22, 10 June 2007 (EDT)

Re: Smoking ban..?

[edit]

Also is the Smoking ban section entirely relevant for Carlow too..?? It certainly is relevant for the Ireland page, but since it is an all-Ireland ban & not restricted to Carlow I think it is more suitable in the ROI page rather than this one..?--(WT-en) Disonyxiated 23:22, 10 June 2007 (EDT)

Re: 3rd Level Education.

[edit]

Perhaps the 3rd level education information i.e. ...

(The town is home to two third-level colleges - Carlow I.T., on the Kilkenny Road, and Carlow College (known locally as St. Patrick's College). The student population Carlow town is 3,000 strong, contributing to the growth in the number of student apartments, and the aforementioned nightlife.)

... would be better suited to a seperate Learn section. This would make the Understand section smaller, as it seems to be quite long when compared to other sections in similar articles.

Re: Above

[edit]

A brief mention on the smoking ban wouldn't go amiss but the section that's there is a bit lengthy for a local article I suppose. The info on the colleges works well I reckon, there's definitely room for a Learn section in the town article and the short County info on them would back it up quite nicely. In a nutshell, smoking yea - colleges nay! (WT-en) Alan1989 19:41, 10 August 2007 (EDT)

Redirects

[edit]

I propose redirecting Rathvilly and Hacketstown to Tullow. They're just itsy-bitsy places short on amenities and POIs.

The official name of Bagenalstown is Muine Bheag but both names are in common use; I've create a redirect for the latter but suggest no name change there. If we were shackled to "official" names then we'd have to rename Offaly as "King's County", that king being Philip II of Spain. Grahamsands (talk) 10:13, 21 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
